DEI Accelerator Demo Day shows progress and success of latest class of founders - UMSL Daily | UMSL Daily - UMSL Daily

La’Crassia Wilderness suffered from severe and chronically dry skin as a child.

“I would scratch the skin off my legs,” she said. “I couldn’t find solutions. Every morning I would wake up scratching, and it was so annoying. It makes you feel self-conscious about your skin. So, I did something about it.”

And that’s how Butter Love, a line of body butter and other beauty and bath products was created.

Butter Love was one of the brands on display last Tuesday as the University of Missouri–St. Louis hosted Demo Day for entrepreneurs who made up the second cohort in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Accelerator, powered by UMSL Accelerate.

Wilderness was one of five startup founders who presented their products to a full audience and potential investors, including representatives from Ameren and Edward Jones, who have partnered with UMSL on the DEI Accelerator. In addition to Wilderness, UMSL alumnus Tony Davis of Pop Pop Hurray!, Will Bubenik of Nebula Media, Paris Rollins of Picky Eaterz and Valeria Rodriguez of VR Creative all presented their products.

Each founder told a story of why they created their business and the progress it’s made as a result of the resources received in the DEI Accelerator program.

“It’s meant the ability to scale faster,” said Rollins, whose business, Picky Eaterz, creates healthy meals for children. “And then also the way the mentor was able to guide me throughout my journey. I feel like I was able to do more in the eight weeks on this journey than I would have been able to do on my own in a year. The media coverage, the mentorship, the free help from an intern and also with the cash I was able to excel way faster.”

The DEI Accelerator program helped Davis fulfill the vision for his business that began in 2020, including beginning the process of opening other locations in addition to his flagship popcorn shop in Ferguson. That which created ten jobs. He has also expanded his brand by obtaining a partnership with Busch Stadium to be the official popcorn of the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Getting that first check was big in our expansion,” Davis said. “The program helped us look at our brand development and cost structure. Those things will put you on a trajectory. The program also connected us to resources and mentors. They helped me talk through several different variations of where we want to go.”

St. Louis County Executive Dr. Sam Page spent his birthday at the event to support diverse entrepreneurs.

“St. Louis has a great reputation for startups,” Page said. “And we need to make sure that we are focusing on DEI in every aspect of our community and culture. And this DEI for startups, this accelerator is an important part of that opportunity. We know that there are a lot of opportunities in St. Louis, and we want to make sure those opportunities are available for everyone, and this accelerator levels the playing field.”

Sam Page stands in front of the Flipstik table chatting with the owner.

County Executive Dr. Sam Page chats with owner Akeem Shannon of Flipstik, who was a member of the DEI Accelerator’s inaugural cohort.

Joan Phillips, dean of the College of Business Administration, agreed.

“There is so much talent and creativity,” Phillips said. “And we can drive economic development and vitality by harnessing that talent. Too many times underserved populations don’t get that same opportunity. Each and every single one of these products and services are all targeted to make our society better, and we need to give them an opportunity so that they can continue to deliver the value to each of us.”

Delivering value to society is one of the main goals of Bubenik’s business, Nebula Media, which creates digital accessibility for those with disabilities that make using the internet a challenge. Bubenik credits the DEI Accelerator program for helping his business complete its mission and offering a community of support.

“The DEI accelerator has been transformational,” said Bubenik, who has secured over 50 new clients. “Just the sense of community, being a part of other founders that are trying to do something impactful for the community – it’s been incredible. The transparency and honesty amongst the group was important because everyone shared their successes. We talked about our struggles, and we were able to really grow as a cohort and as a community because we just had that baseline of honesty and transparency.”

Owners of Fatted Calf server their food at the Demo Day event

Food from the Fattened Caf, a former participant in the UMSL DEI Accelerator, was a big hit at Demo Day.

The DEI Accelerator has been a source of pride for the university as it exemplifies the values of the institution by contributing to the economic well-being of the region.

“I’m so proud that that first cohort has been so successful moving into the second cohort,” Chancellor Kristin Sobolik said. “It’s now expanding out into other areas that are really important for the development of economic and inclusive prosperity in our region.”

Read endorses Kotek for Oregon governor after Demo primary loss - Portland Tribune

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Former House speaker beat state treasurer, 56% to 32%, for what will be a three-woman race in Nov. 8 election.

PMG PHOTO: PETER WONG - State Treasurer Tobias Read and former House Speaker Tina Kotek during their first joint appearance of their Democratic primary campaign for governor March 18 at the Oregon AFL-CIO convention at the Hyatt Regency in Portland. Read has endorsed Kotek, who won the May 17 primary, 56% to 32%. State Treasurer Tobias Read has endorsed Tina Kotek, who defeated him in the May 17 Democratic primary for Oregon governor.

Kotek, the former Oregon House speaker from Portland, won 56.1% to Read's 31.8%. Patrick Starnes, the 2018 Independent Party nominee who ran as a Democrat, won 2.1%, and 12 other candidates split the rest of the Democratic votes.

Kotek faces Republican Christine Drazan of Canby, the former House GOP leader who won 23% in a 19-candidate field, and unaffiliated candidate Betsy Johnson, a former Democratic state senator from Scappoose who plans to qualify by petition for the Nov. 8 general election.

Read had been endorsed by two former Democratic governors, Barbara Roberts and John Kitzhaber.

Read will remain state treasurer, which he was elected to in 2016 after five terms in the Oregon House from Beaverton. He is in the middle of his second four-year term as treasurer.

His statement issued May 31:

"Our campaign for governor was always about how to build a stronger future for Oregon's kids. We gave a voice to the frustration that many Oregonians feel right now and the urgent need for change.

"Two weeks ago, Democrats made clear that they want Tina Kotek to be our nominee. I respect their decision and have congratulated the former speaker on her victory. I'm committed to working with her to make Oregon a place where every child can realize their full potential.

"We can't afford to be complacent. Our values and our future are on the ballot — everything from protecting reproductive rights, to combating gun violence, to battling climate change, to spurring rural economic development, and improving our schools so everyone has a chance to succeed.

"Everything we care about is on the line. It's essential to have a governor that shares these priorities. I'm endorsing Tina Kotek and will work hard to elect the entire Democratic ticket this fall to secure the future we want for Oregon and our kids."

As  part of its effort to increase its sustainability practices, Caterpillar has embarked on a three-year energy project in Minnesota. CAT is partnering with District Energy St. Paul to test and demonstrate a hydrogen-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) system. Eventually, that partnership could lead to new hydrogen fuel options for energy-efficient engines.

"Caterpillar is focused on supporting our customers with reliable, sustainable power solutions," said Joe Creed, Caterpillar group president of Energy and Transportation. "This hydrogen demonstration project will enable us to evaluate additional hydrogen fuel options for an existing energy-efficient engine, providing even more possibilities for helping our customers meet their climate-related goals and objectives."

According to CAT, CHP systems provide both electricity and heat simultaneously, increasing overall efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions. To assess the potential of a hydrogen-fueled CHP system under real-world operating conditions, power and heat from the demonstration project will integrate into District Energy St. Paul's electrical and thermal infrastructure. District Energy St. Paul distributes chilled water and hot water to heat and cool buildings and single-family homes in downtown St. Paul, Minn., and adjacent areas.

The project, scheduled to begin next year, is supported and partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and backed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. CAT offers a 1250 kW generator set capable of operating on 100% hydrogen, including renewable green hydrogen, on a designed-to-order basis, as well as commercially available power generation solutions from 400 kW to 4.5 MW that can be configured to operate on natural gas blended with up to 25% hydrogen.

UPDATE: The Vigoride OTV's 1st Demo Flight Finds Momentus Working On Clearing Anomalies – SatNews - news.satnews.com

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Artistic rendition of Momentus’ Vigoride OTV.

Momentus Inc. has a status update regarding the company’s first demo mission. Momentus has established two-way contact with the Vigoride Orbital Transfer Vehicle and, as is often the case with a new spacecraft, there have been some initial anomalies.

The company is using an unplanned frequency as they work through this ‘challenge’ and are applying for a Special Temporary Authority (STA) with the FCC to address this situation to help command the vehicle back to nominal configuration. The Momentus engineering and operations team is diligently working to address the anomalies. Additional information will be provided when available.

Momentus Inc. (NASDAQ: MNTS) (“Momentus” or the “Company”) has launched their first demonstration flight of the Vigoride orbital transfer vehicle (OTV) to LEO aboard the SpaceX Transporter-5 mission. Momentus also announced that it has placed its first customer satellite in orbit and plans to conduct more deployments of customer payloads in the coming days.

The versatile Vigoride spacecraft, designed to support a range of transportation and in-space infrastructure services, is slated to perform a series of operations in space to test and demonstrate the performance of the vehicle and its subsystems. Under the company’s license from the Federal Communications Commission, the mission is scheduled to last up to 180 days. The mission will also feature the deployment of several customer satellites and the testing of hardware for another customer.

A key part of the Vigoride vehicle is the Microwave Electrothermal Thruster (MET) that uses water as a propellant. The MET produces thrust by expelling extremely hot gases through a rocket nozzle. However, unlike a conventional chemical rocket engine, which creates heat through a chemical reaction, the MET heats propellant using solar microwave energy. Using the MET offers cost-effective, efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly propulsion to meet the demands for in-space transportation and infrastructure services.

On this first flight, Momentus welcomes FOSSA Systems and Orbit NTNU among its customers. FOSSA is deploying multiple smallsats as part of a constellation to provide global and real-time Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity for industrial applications. Orbit NTNU will be using its payload, SelfieSat, to take a selfie from a satellite in space (the payload has an external screen, displaying pictures sent up by the public while a camera mounted on an arm photographs the screen with the Earth in the background.)

In addition to Vigoride, Momentus used a second port on the Falcon 9 to fly a third-party deployer from a trusted partner. Momentus used this deployer to place its first customer satellite from Bronco Space at the California State Polytechnic University at Pomona on-orbit. Four other satellite payloads that are customers of the deployer system partner were also placed into orbit.

Today’s launch was the culmination of months of work to conduct an extensive ground test campaign, ready the spacecraft, and obtain the necessary government licenses and approvals for our first flight of the Vigoride vehicle,” said Momentus Chief Executive Officer, John Rood. “We’re excited to see our vision of providing transportation and space infrastructure services and being an early provider of these key services to the growing new space economy starting to be realized. MET technology has been researched in academia since the 1980s, but we’re pioneers in bringing it to market. Testing the MET on this first Vigoride flight is one of the important tasks that we plan to conduct as we continue to refine and improve its performance. Our journey to space was only made possible by our team’s dedication, focus, and considerable talent. I’m proud of how Momentus employees responded to the many challenges we faced. It would have been easy to believe that our initial challenges were insurmountable, but the fact that Momentus didn’t quit speaks to an emerging culture that will be the true foundation of our success over time.”

Momentus is a U.S. commercial space company that plans to offer in-space infrastructure services, including in-space transportation, hosted payloads and in-orbit services. Momentus believes it can make new ways of operating in space possible with its planned in-space transfer and service vehicles that will be powered by an innovative water plasma-based propulsion system that is under development.

What Makes the Perfect Demo? | MusicWorld - BMI, music

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

“How good do demos need to be?” is one of the questions I am asked most often in my workshops. To effectively answer this question, you need to identify the purpose of your demo recording. For example, is it intended to be pitched in the hopes of finding a home with a recording artist? Will it be used to seek representation by a music publisher? Will the recording be used to present you as a recording artist to record labels, managers and producers? Do you intend to use it to promote yourself for live gigs? Will it also be pitched for sync licensing opportunities? Do you have an established relationship with the industry pro to whom you will play the recording? Let’s look at what constitutes the “perfect demo” for each of these scenarios.

The Perfect “Song Demo”

Song demos are intended to showcase the song, as opposed to the singer or band. These are the recordings you would play to pitch a song to a music publisher or other industry pro in the hopes of having an artist (other than yourself) record it.

If you hope to have a publisher represent your songs to record label executives, music producers, and recording artists, record demos the publisher can confidently present with no apologies or disclaimers. The ideal song demo is one that clearly conveys your song’s hit potential. But different styles require varying types of production to accomplish this.

For a tender, slow song you might only need a guitar or a keyboard and vocal to fully convey the way you imagine the finished recording sounding. My demo for “Why Don’t You Kiss Her” (written by Jason Blume and Andrew Fromm, recorded by Jesse McCartney) consisted of two acoustic guitars (played by Larry Beaird) and one lead vocal track (performed by Dave Brooks). If I had imagined drums or other instruments on the final recording, I would have included them. When Andrew Gold produced the track, he stayed extremely close to the demo, recreating the guitar licks almost note for note, but adding the beautiful cello part.

Uptempo songs, and songs in styles such as EDM, R&B, or R&B/Pop, in which the backing tracks contribute a huge amount to the songs’ success, will likely need to be fully produced recordings with keyboards, guitars, bass, and drums, as well as background vocals and harmony parts. In these instances, the demos you play should not require a listener to imagine how your song might sound if it had a funky groove, if it included catchy keyboard licks, if it had an irresistible bass line, or any other “ifs.” If you imagine any element as being a critical part of your song’s success include it in your demo.

Whether your demo is bare-bones or fully produced, the vocals and instruments need to be in tune and up to the professional standard. Your recordings not only showcase your ability as a songwriter, but they also speak volumes about your professionalism. They as well allow you to share that you have additional skills, such as expertise as a producer, ability to play or program various instruments, and that you are a strong vocalist, if these are applicable.

If you have a well-established relationship with a publisher, you should be able to benefit from his or her feedback before investing time and money in a demo. In many genres, a keyboard or guitar and a vocal should be sufficient to see if the publisher is interested in representing the song. Unless you are established as a superstar writer, don’t pitch rough versions to A & R executives, recording artists, or artists’ managers.

Remember that demos are not only the vehicle to present your songs to industry pros, but they also have another equally important job—they express your vision for your songs. In most cases demo recordings are our only opportunity to give our input about the instrumentation and production. In thirty-five years of having my songs recorded by artists other than myself, I have yet to be consulted by a record producer or artist seeking suggestions about the instrumentation or arrangement. I make my “suggestions” by recording the musical and vocal arrangements as I imagine them. My demo essentially says, “This is the guitar lick I hear in the verses”; “This is where I hear the background vocals coming in”; “This is the bass line and drum pattern I envision for the final recording,” and more.

With only a handful of exceptions, the finished recordings of my songs have sounded almost indistinguishable from the demos I submitted, except for the vocalist and the improved sonic quality. For example, when I’ve introduced a cello in my demo’s second verse, a similar cello line has almost always been included in the same spot on the master recording. Similarly, background vocals, guitar licks, and other critical elements included on my demos have almost always been reflected in hit artists’ versions.

The Perfect “Artist Demo”

An artist demo is intended to demonstrate a singer or band’s potential as a recording artist. It is tasked with convincing managers, producers, and record label executives that you are worthy of a significant investment of their time and money. An artist demo should sound as close as possible to the way you envision your final product. To accomplish this, it needs to include those elements that contribute to defining you artistically, such as the instrumentation and vocal arrangements you hope to feature on your master recordings. Artists’ demos tend to be more fully produced than song demos, with more attention paid to the sounds and effects. It is critical that the vocals be as strong as possible, so for many artists’ demos, vocals are comped, compiling the best parts of multiple takes. Depending on the genre, they are also likely to be tuned with the aid of computer software.

The Perfect Demo to Secure Gigs

If you are seeking live performance opportunities, a club owner or booking agent will likely be more interested in how you sound and interact in front of an audience than in how your recordings sound with the benefit of studio effects, such as comping and tuning. An audio or video recording of a live performance or a compilation of various live performances is a good way to go when the recording is intended to secure gigs. This is likely the only scenario for which you would submit a live recording.

The Perfect Demo for Sync Licensing

Many of the songs heard in the background on TV shows and in movies were recorded to function as songwriters’ and artists’ demos. To be suitable for television and film, the instrumental and vocal performances on these recordings, as well as the overall sonic quality, needs to be on par with recordings heard on the radio. This is sometimes referred to as broadcast quality because in most instances recordings placed in TV shows and films are not re-recorded; the recordings we submit are used “as is.” Additionally, we need to have the right to use the performances embodied in the recordings for sync placement.

Budgets

The cost to produce excellent demo recordings runs the gamut from zero to thousands of dollars. Those who have a home recording studio and the ability to play or program the instruments and sing the vocals incur no costs, while those who hire top studios, engineers, musicians and vocalists might spend a thousand dollars or more.

A song that requires only a guitar or keyboard and a vocal can typically be recorded in a professional studio for as little as three hundred dollars. Full-band recordings and those that require extensive keyboard programming and background vocals tend to cost from $500 - $1,200. Note that these are ballpark figures, intended to provide a general range.

Some songwriters with home studios hire one or more musicians or vocalists to perform on their recordings. In some cases, these tracks can be recorded at the musician’s or vocalist’s home studio and sent digitally.

Demos intended to promote recording artists typically cost more than demos intended to showcase songs because they require more studio time to capture stellar performances and approximate a finished project.

Back in the days when the cost of a McDonald’s Happy Meal was my food budget for an entire week, I sang the vocals and collaborated with writer/producers who produced our demos for free in their home studios. I also offered myself as a proverbial guinea pig to students who were learning how to become recording engineers.

Hot Tips and Summary

  • Lead with your strongest song whether sending songs digitally or playing them in person for an industry pro. If you are sending individual links limit them to your three best songs.
  • The lead vocal is probably the single most important element of your demo. Vocals need to “sell” your song by conveying the emotion you intend. They need to be in tune and in time. While you want your singer to sound consistent with hit singers in the genre you are targeting, avoid over-stylized performances and vocals that sound like impersonations.
  • In most instances you will want to keep your intro short—not more than eight musical bars—unless this is an artist demo, and a longer introduction is an integral part of the song.
  • It is common practice for vocal levels to be mixed slightly louder in song demos than in recordings heard on the radio. This practice, which is most prevalent in country music, helps an artist or decision-maker to clearly hear the words and melody.

Our demos represent us just as a portfolio of professional photos shows a fashion model in his or her best light. There is too much riding on our recordings to produce anything less than the perfect demo.

Online matches will support up to two players per side, with random matchmaking as well as friend invitations available. Nintendo says demo players may experiment with all 10 characters available at launch, to build a team that suits their preferred playing style.

Multiplayer will be available on the following dates and times:

  • June 3, 8-9 p.m. PDT
  • June 4, 4-5 a.m. PDT
  • June 4, 12-1 p.m. PDT

A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required to access the multiplayer portion of the First Kick Demo Event. Nintendo is dangling the usual free seven-day trial for those who don’t subscribe, and says that trial offer is good even for those who have used it in the past.

Mario Strikers: Battle League launches June 10 for Nintendo Switch. It’s the long-distance sequel to 2007’s Mario Strikers Charged for Wii, and 2005’s Super Mario Strikers for GameCube. All three games are developed by Next Level Games, the longtime collaborator that Nintendo acquired in 2021.

“When we originally presented this idea, we expected to hear no, this won’t work,” says Team Factor co-founder Jennifer Macha-Hebert, in a prepared statement. “But with the help of the Tech Park, a lot of doors have opened for us.”

In 2021, founders Nely Ward and Macha-Hebert participated in the Ignition 1.0 program, which helps companies discover whether their idea has the potential to be the next big thing. They tied for first place, receiving a $5,000 investment prize at the inaugural demo day.

Throughout Nexus’ Ignition 2.0, companies were paired into teams and assigned a mentor with whom they met weekly. Companies met one-on-one with subject matter experts for insight on crucial commercialization areas.

Champion Technology Services founder and CEO Gary Hammer, Applica Scientific Partners founder and managing partner Billy Davis and Innovation Catalyst CEO Bill Ellison served as pitch judges.

The Ignition 2.0 cohort included:

  • Accelerant Education—Joshua Anderson;
  • Directed Analytics—Brenton Moss and Jody Mitchell;
  • Jade Systems—Samuel Meyes and Victoria Liu;
  • Pali Inc.—Jonathan Farnet and Mark Champagne;
  • Point Lookout—Srinee Bajaj;
  • RX Interactive—Del-Metri Williams;
  • Speechibi—Leah Singh;
  • Team Factor—Jennifer Macha-Hebert and Nely Ward;
  • Thumb—Aimee Russo-Mounger, Spencer Mounger and Marcus Mounger.

A look at the nine teams that just presented at Pear’s latest demo day - TechCrunch

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

TechCrunch has been covering the demo days of the seed-stage venture firm Pear VC since 2015. (There we are in the front row in 2016, surrounded by investors, typing away.)

A few things have remained true since that time. There are typically 10 or so companies that present and not many more. A lot of top firms show up, including from NEA, Lux Capital and Sequoia Capital. And the energy in the room reflects that of Pear’s founders, Pejman Nozad and Mar Hershenson, who year after year project the cheery demeanor of people eager to win you over. (They’re winning over investors, certainly; as we reported last Friday, Pear appears close to raising its biggest fund ever.)

Notably, the terms that Pear offers startups haven’t changed much over the years, either. In exchange for 14 weeks of help with everything from product-market fit to the go-to-market strategy a team should employ, the startups in Pear’s accelerator program give Pear the right to invest from $500,000 to $750,000 in each team at a valuation that it caps at $10 million. Pear lets the founders choose the check size. Founders who take $500,000 are selling 5% of their company, essentially; while those taking a bigger check are selling more.

Unlike the far bigger and more renowned accelerator Y Combinator, whose startup participants begin talks with investors nearly the moment they’re accepted into the program, Pear further tries to shield its startups from conversations with other investors until after its demo day, says Nozad. “We want to focus on building products and finding customers” while the startups are participating in its accelerator program, he insists.

Of course, some VCs still get an early look, in part by mentoring the startups. For example, Mark Suster of Upfront Ventures and Kirsten Green of Forerunner Ventures helped advise Pear’s newest batch of companies.

For the rest of you who missed Pear’s demo day this year, which took place last week in person at the outfit’s new headquarters in Menlo Park, California (Pear has taken over a former beer garden), herewith are the nine teams that presented.

Spathios
What it does: A marketplace to book short-term space rentals for corporate events, meetings and productions
Founders: Pol Hevia (CEO), Joaquim Tresserra (CTO)
Founded in: 2020
HQ: Barcelona, Spain
The pitch: Spathios says it’s a marketplace to book short-term venues and spaces. Its platform aims to enable businesses to host meetings and events in some of the world’s most unique venues. It also says it allows multiple stakeholders to manage bookings, collaborate across teams and simplify their accounting. The market for corporate events is an estimated $600 billion, but most of the spend is currently through hotels and conference centers; Spathios thinks it can bring the untapped supply of unique venues like museums, historic locations and even palaces online for the first time. Already, it says, it has worked with large customers like Conde Nast, Sony Music and Google.

FairStreet
What it does: Software platform powering independent Medicare agents
Founders: Sarah Jacobson (co-CEO), Tori Seidenstein (co-CEO)
Founded in: 2021
HQ: San Francisco
The pitch: FairStreet aims to help seniors enroll in the right health insurance by providing the software platform that independent Medicare agents can use to run and scale their businesses. Apparently, independent agents enroll 60% of all seniors into Medicare and are the fastest growing segment, and FairStreet is building what it describes as a full-stack software platform to cut their work in half and enable them to scale. As for traction, FairStreet says that in two months’ time, it has acquired 12 experienced Medicare agents, and that it has 90 more on its waitlist. FairStreet earns a recurring commission paid by the insurance company whenever one of their agents enrolls a senior into a Medicare plan.

Menta
What it does: Embedded payments and financial infrastructure for B2B companies in LatAm
Founders: Virigina Folgueiro (CEO), Alejandro Quirno Lavalle (CMO), Santiago Lorenzo (CTO)
Founded in: late 2021
HQ: Argentina
The pitch: Menta says its tech infrastructure enables B2B companies to offer their own payment and financial services to retail merchants in their ecosystems. It says its network offers network effects, too — customers have access to all of the retailers on the platform. The service just launched, but its founders say it’s already live with three customers in Argentina and Mexico and that it has 10 other agreements signed.

PemPem
What it does: Fintech and supply chain software for micro-enterprises in commodity supply chains
Founders: Joann de Zegher (CEO), JK Metwalli (CTO)
Founded in: late 2021
HQ: Montreal, Quebec
The pitch: PemPem is building mobile supply chain management software for micro-enterprises in commodity supply chains. They’ve built a mobile platform that provides full-stack financial and commercial solutions for the 500 million micro-enterprises that produce and trade the world’s commodities at an annual value of $2.7 trillion. With PemPem, micro-enterprises can discover prices, access supply chain financing for inputs, and soon, it says, be able to trade their commodities through PemPem’s marketplace. Already, it says, 5,000 monthly active enterprises have been using PemPem’s price discovery product. Its marketplace is launching this summer.

Snout
What it does: Membership-based healthcare plans for pets
Founder: Emily Dong (CEO)
Founded in: 2020
HQ: San Francisco
The pitch: Snout is building a full coverage health plan for pets to address what it says is a big need in the market for it. According to Snout, there are 200 million pets in the U.S. and 47% of pet owners report having pet-related debt. Only 2% of these pets are insured because pet insurance doesn’t cover routine expenses — only paying out when catastrophic events occur — and while veterinary practices want to help pets and ease the financial burden on pet parents, as relatively small, cash-based businesses, they struggle to defer revenue. Snout’s solution is to provide both capital and software to veterinary practices to make healthcare plans financially feasible for both vets and pets. It’s launching this month and says it already has a waitlist of customers representing $1 million in annual recurring revenue.

Rendition
What it does: Helping software teams build products faster by automating design code
Founders: Robert Nowell (CEO), Caleb Ouellette (CTO)
Founded in: 2020
HQ: San Francisco
The pitch: Rendition is an AI assistant for building user interfaces from designs. Why does that matter? The team says its product is five times faster than writing code by hand. Since launching last month, Rendition has onboarded five customers and is doing $10,000 in monthly recurring revenue; the plan (naturally) is to capture much more of the $100 billion annual front-end development market by automating the more than 1 billion hours of developer work that goes into UI development every year.

Supercharge
What it does: Stablecoin payments infrastructure for web3
Founders: Ben Gusberg (CEO), Jim Zheng (CTO)
Founded in: late 2021
HQ: Stanford, California
The pitch: Supercharge builds stablecoin payments infrastructure for web3, allowing developers and merchants to access the $5 trillion stablecoin transaction market. In fact, it gives developers simple APIs to accept stablecoins in minutes, it says. Supercharge is launching next month in the Binance, Polkadot and Polygon ecosystems; the (immodest? laudable?) goal is to be the base layer that seamlessly brings all of web3 to the mainstream.

BeyondTrucks
What it does: A vertical SaaS platform powering SMB trucking companies with workflow automation, smart data and embedded financial solutions
Founders: Hans Galland (CEO), Paul Xie (COO)
Founded in: 2019
HQ: San Mateo, California
The pitch: BeyondTrucks is building a vertical SaaS platform for SMB trucking companies to make growing their businesses easier. They’re focused on powering trucking companies with workflow automation, smart data and embedded financial services, helping them build their businesses in a more data-centric way. The company is chasing after what it says is a $1.7 trillion fleet-payments market, and it says it’s seeing traction. Launched in January, the outfit claims to be already serving 45 fleets with 280 trucks.

Neura Health
What it does: Virtual neurology clinic for patients suffering from neurologic conditions
Founder: Elizabeth Burstein (CEO), Sameer Madan (CTO)
Founded in: 2020
HQ: New York
The pitch: Neura Health is a virtual neurology clinic with a mission to improve the access and quality of neurological care: increase convenience, improve outcomes and lower costs. There is a severe lack of neurologists in the U.S., resulting in wait times of up to six months, says the outfit. Meanwhile, Neura Health’s platform connects patients to neurologists with built-in neurology-specific symptom monitoring and condition-specific diagnostic tests. Patients also receive a mobile app with a dedicated concierge to ensure that all their care needs are met, creating (hopefully) a highly effective patient-provider relationship. The company’s longer-term vision, notably, is to find cures by learning from the experience of every neurology patient.

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Trinity Trigger
Image: FuRyu

Following on from the accidental leak earlier this week, a demo for the new action RPG Trinity Trigger has now been released on the Nintendo Switch eShop in Japan. Although it's mostly in Japanese, you can still get an idea of how it plays.

This new game published by FuRyu and developed by Three Rings is due out on 15th September in Japan. There's no word (at least yet) about a local release.

As we've previously mentioned here on Nintendo Life, this game is definitely worth a look if you're a fan of the RPG genre - with a bumper list of RPG veterans working on the project, who have previously contributed to games like Chrono Cross, the Xenoblade Chronicles series, Bravely Default, Secret of Mana and even the Pokémon series.

The development team hopes to capture the feeling of "excitement, elevation and tension" and revive the "90s era of RPG classics for the modern age". You can learn a bit more about this upcoming release in our existing coverage:

Here's a full showcase of the demo, courtesy of the YouTube channel justonegamr:

VoltAero’s Cassio 1 to Perform Demo Flights in the Netherlands - Aviation International News

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

France’s VoltAero plans to perform demonstration flights with its first Cassio hybrid-electric aircraft in the Netherlands starting June 13 to promote sustainable regional aviation in Dutch regions, the company said Tuesday. The weeklong deployment of Cassio 1 forms part of the Netherlands’ effort to introduce electric-powered commercial passenger flights within five years under its Power Up initiative.

Program engineers will assess operational costs, noise performance, ground infrastructure requirements, and technical support for the future use of Cassio family aircraft by commercial aviation operators.

Power Up involves the four main regional airports in the Netherlands (Eindhoven Airport, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Groningen Airport Eelde, and Maastricht Aachen Airport) with the support of the Schiphol Group and other partners aimed at facilitating and stimulating the introduction of electric Regional Air Mobility (eRAM) in the Netherlands. A so-called open-source accelerator, the initiative brings together aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and airports in a joint effort to improve regional connectivity.

“Our cooperation is an excellent opportunity to show how Cassio can significantly lower carbon emissions and reduce noise by using VoltAero’s proven electric-hybrid propulsion system,” said VoltAero CEO and chief technology officer Jean Botti. “With the service entry of Cassio production aircraft to begin in 2024, our timing is perfectly matched to the Netherlands’ goal of being a pioneer in sustainable aviation.”

Eindhoven Airport has signed with VoltAero for the Netherlands’ demonstration flights. Located in the southern Netherlands, the airport will serve as the base of operations for Cassio 1 during its flights.

“VoltAero is an extremely valuable partner, bringing its electric-hybrid aircraft expertise already gained with Cassio 1’s operations on segments that mirror typical airline regional routes in our country,” noted Eindhoven Airport CEO Roel Hellemons. “Additionally, the VoltAero team’s combined knowledge of e-aviation will be a true resource in helping define the future deployment and handling of electric aircraft flights.”

VoltAero’s proprietary electric-hybrid powertrain has undergone extensive airborne evaluations since 2020 on the Cassio 1 testbed in its 600-kilowatt full-power output. Cassio 1 has flown nearly 10,000 kilometers (5,400 nm) in operations across Europe as VoltAero readies the propulsion system and battery chain for airworthiness certification.

Cassio aircraft will use their propulsion system’s electric motors for all-electric power during taxi, takeoff, primary flight, and landing. The hybrid feature—using an internal combustion engine—serves as a range extender, recharging the batteries while in flight. The hybrid element also serves as a backup in the event of a problem with the electric propulsion.

Three versions of the Cassio aircraft, ranging in capacity from four to 12 seats, are being planned by VoltAero. The company markets the family for operation with airlines, air taxi/charter companies, and private owners, as well as in utility-category service for cargo, postal delivery, and medical evacuation applications.

VoltAero plans first to gain certification of the Cassio 330, carrying four or five seats and powered by a 330-kilowatt electric-hybrid power module. The company’s six-seat Cassio 480 will feature an electric-hybrid propulsion power of 480 kilowatts, while the 10- to 12-seat Cassio 600 will fly on 600 kilowatts.

The Cassio design features a forward canard and an aft-set wing with twin booms that support a high horizontal tail. The company plans to gain certification to Europe’s EASA CS23 specification as a single-engine, general aviation category aircraft.

A production facility dedicated to building the Cassio aircraft is expected to break ground this year at Rochefort Airport in France's Noubelle-Aquitaine region.

XEL Demo arrives on Steam - ClutchPoints

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

3D sci-fi fantasy game XEL is now available on Steam with a free-to-play demo, ahead of the game’s release this Summer on PC and Switch.

Publisher Assemble Entertainment and Developer Tiny Roar brings 3D sci-fi fantasy game XEL on Steam and Nintendo Switch this Summer, and the game is currently available with a free demo download on Steam. The game’s store page describes the game:

“XEL is an epic 3D sci-fi fantasy action-adventure. Explore the mysterious world of XEL and help protagonist Reid to uncover her enigmatic past. Make new friends and foes along the way and collect exciting gadgets to master challenging dungeons and solve time bending puzzles”

The game is played from an isometric perspective similar to games like Hades, Bastion, Diablo, and Torchlight, all of which play somewhat in the same vein as XEL. In XEL, players take on the role of Reid, an amnesiac traveler stranded in a mysterious world where only a painfully deep dive into her subconscious will unlock the knowledge needed to find her way out. The ability to jump through space and time doesn’t hurt either!

Revealed during the Indie Live Expo on Steam earlier this year, XEL is a love letter to classic Zelda titles, mixing the fantasy with sci-fi and adding sprinkles of modernity to old-school dungeon exploration. Key features of XEL include:

  • Old School Meets New School: Retro meets modern in a classic top-down RPG gameplay style, and a well-crafted combat system comprised of different attacks, dodging, parrying, and clever gadgets
  • Adventure Through Space and Time: Explore the mysterious world of XEL and uncover its dark past, utilizing mind-bending time travel to unlock the secrets of the mysterious land
  • A Timeless Audiovisual Experience: Composed by Gidon Wolff, XEL offers a timeless soundtrack complemented by vibrant visuals, handcrafted by a passionate indie team

XEL comes out on both the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam and GOG this Summer of 2022. The game will also eventually have Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5 ports down the line.

Demo permits for Aspen homes to be limited to a half dozen a year - The Aspen Times

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Aspen City Council agreed Monday to limit the number of homes that can be demolished within city limits in a year to six.

The new policy, which was agreed on by the majority of council during a work session, is in response to the unprecedented pace of residential development in town and the impacts it creates on the community.

The limitation on demolition permits will be included in an ordinance that will be introduced on first reading to council June 14 with a final vote expected June 28.

The regulations contained in the ordinance have been in the making for five months, since council in December passed a six-month emergency moratorium on new residential development, citing massive quality-of-life impacts to traffic, affordable housing, environmental conditions and other issues that are detailed in the Aspen Area Community Plan, which is a guiding document that officials base their decisions on.

Council last month extended the moratorium to Aug. 8 so that staff could continue to work on policy and formulate regulations based on public feedback.

Councilman Ward Hauenstein said Monday that he favored limiting demolition permits to five a year.

“We are here because we feel it’s out of control, and I think that to make some kind of meaningful adjustment requires meaningful action,” he said.

Councilman Skippy Mesirow supported the limit of five while his colleagues Mayor Torre and Councilmembers John Doyle and Rachel Richards landed on six.

There is a recent trend showing a significant increase in demolition projects — 15 were issued last year and an average of 6.5 were given each year for the past eight, according to Ben Anderson, the city’s principal planner.

Under the new rule, land use applications would be accepted on a first come, first served basis and entered into the queue once determined complete.

Central to staff’s proposed response to concerns about the pace and scale of single-family and duplex development is the use of the city’s long-standing growth management quota system to regulate projects that engage in the demolition and redevelopment of a property.

Currently there are 19 residential development allotments and under current code, they are only necessary for new subdivisions or multifamily units.

In staff’s view, residential projects that trigger demolition are very impactful to neighbors, to Aspen’s physical infrastructure and environment, and to the capacity at the Pitkin County Landfill, according to Anderson.

“They generate a significant employee demand and often, these projects transform the scope and scale of the existing home into a new residence that is fundamentally different, both in form and function, from the previous structure,” he wrote in a memo to council.

Council also agreed Monday to allow demolition projects to be reviewed administratively by staff, rather than the current system of by right and straight to building permit.

Staff would review a land-use application and match it against required residential demolition and redevelopment standards.

Those standards include waste diversion; reporting of carbon usage of the building process and materials for a project, as well as the future energy use of a home; ensuring homes are designed and built for potential future conversion to 100% electric and the accommodation of on-site photo-voltaic and battery storage systems.

Projects also would be subject to a higher expectation in contributing to local water quality through implementation of non-structural best management practices.

“When we talk to the development community, they were very comfortable with setting the standards high but they wanted it to be very objective,” Anderson told council.

Implementing the standards would be a starting point that will be more fully built out, defined and updated over time, according to Anderson.

Council also agreed to update affordable housing mitigation requirements on the entirety of a new home.

“These four levers together that we can make policy adjustments to are really about trying to get an assessment of what a unit of affordable housing costs and what the responsibility is for development towards that cost,” Anderson said.

Combined, the policies agreed on by council seek to discourage demolition, but if it does happen, the resulting redevelopment will be high performing and be better aligned with the AACP and Aspen’s climate action goals and commitments, according to Anderson.

Torre said he is proud of the work Community Development staff has done since the moratorium began.

“When we took this bite of the elephant over six months ago, or five months ago, it was daunting,” he said. “You guys have done such a great job of making it digestible and bringing us back really everything that we’ve been asking for. …

“What we are doing is for the betterment of the community, and I think our community recognizes that as well.”
