Six more killed in clash between rebels and Congo army - UPI News

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

July 31 (UPI) -- Six people, including an army officer and civilian, were killed in clashes between the army and Ugandan rebels in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday.

The fighting occurred 15 miles east of Beni in the North Kivu province.

"The DRC armed forces neutralized 4 [Allied Democratic Forces] rebels. We lost a soldier on the battlefield, while enemy bullets hit two civilians, killing one instantly," Lt. Antony Mualushayi told Anadolu Agency News.

Earlier this week, suspected ADF rebels set 10 cars on fire, the military reported. According to the DR government, the ADF has stepped up attacks this year, targeting civilians.

Last week, 16 civilians were killed when a suspected ADF rebel group ambushed a truck.

The army also said it rescued 150 civilian hostages who were being used as human shields by rebels.

Trump Raised $56.8 Million From Online Donors Over Six Months - Bloomberg

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Former President Donald Trump’s political operation raised $56.8 million from online donors in the first half of the year, but didn’t contribute any to federal candidates he’s supporting for the midterm elections during that period.

Trump raised $21.3 million through WinRed, the GOP’s platform for online payments, for a joint fundraising committee that benefits Save America, his leadership political action committee and his former campaign committee. He also took in $34.4 million through Trump Make America Great Again Committee, which also benefits the Republican National Committee, an analysis of WinRed’s latest Federal Election Commission filing shows.

Six Flags Over Texas turns 60 on Aug. 5, and they invite new and old fans of the beloved theme park to join the celebration. Local businessman Angus G. Wynne Jr. envisioned his Arlington theme park as an affordable family entertainment venue, where a single admission price included all the rides and performances in the park. When the park opened Aug. 5, 1961, adult tickets were only $2.75, and children were admitted for $2.25.

Those of us who grew up in North Texas have many favorite memories of our family’s visits to the park, and will especially enjoy the retrospective views of the park’s history at the 60th Anniversary Museum. The retrospective, located in the Crazy Horse Saloon, is open through Aug. 8, and features priceless items and footage dating back to the park’s construction in 1959.

Wynne named the park for the six flags that have flown over Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America, and the Confederate States of America. Six areas of the park showcased the landscaping, food and history of those regions during the park’s early years, but the park now has ten themed areas.

“This entire season has led up to this anniversary celebration,” said Six Flags Over Texas Park President Ron McKenzie. “There have been so many memories made here at the park over the last 60 seasons— from a first roller coaster ride to a first taste of funnel cake. We know that guests are excited to relive those memories— and to make new ones for generations to come.”

The first 10,000 guests at the park Thursday, August 5 will receive a free commemorative 60th Anniversary button. A 1 p.m. ceremony will be held outside the Crazy Horse Saloon, where park president Ron McKenzie is expected to make an exciting announcement about what lies ahead and pay honor to how it all began. Guests can also enjoy specialty throwback food and drink items, including Pink Thing bars priced at only $1 only on August 5.

Ignite the Night

The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders will headline “Ignite the Night,” a high-energy show that leads up to a 60th Anniversary fireworks show each night August 5-8. During the 60th celebration, guests can enjoy everything Six Flags Over Texas has to offer, including:

More than 45 rides and attractions; The Best of Texas festival that continues through August 8; The last chance to catch live shows Deep in the Heart and Blazin Bellz; Casa Magnetica, a 1962 Tilted House attraction that reopened this season for the first time since 2011; Diamond Jubilee Jazz Band at the porch of the Crazy Horse Saloon; and Dancing Fountain Show at Texas Star Mall.

New rides and technology have replaced almost all of the park’s earlier attractions, but Six Flags is bringing back a few favorites, like Casa Magnetico and a log chute ride, for the anniversary. The Heritage Railroad Train that circles the park is the one ride that’s still going strong since they first opened. Six Flags has lived up to its “Thrill Capital of Texas” title by adding new attractions for thrill-seekers of every age. Several new attractions will open next summer, including Bugs Bunny Boomtown and Aquaman Powerwave.

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation is now the world’s largest regional theme park company, with 27 parks in the U.S. Canada, and Mexico. The company’s flagship park, Six Flags Over Texas, features over 100 rides, shows, and attractions, including 14 world-class roller coasters like New Texas Giant and Titan. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, the largest waterpark in North Texas, features more than 40 rides and attractions like Typhoon Twister and Tsunami Surge.

Six Flags Over Texas and Hurricane Harbor Arlington are open daily through August 15. For more information, visit https://ift.tt/2TJMhTQ and https://ift.tt/2VkCzrx.

Comments on: Demo Permits Filed for 35 West 57th Street in Midtown, Manhattan - New York YIMBY

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Full demolition permits have been filed for 35 West 57th Street in Midtown, Manhattan. Located between Fifth and Sixth Avenues along Billionaires’ Row, the 2,510-square-foot site is occupied by a five-story mixed-use building. Built in 1891, the mansion with Beaux Arts details was a wedding gift to the granddaughter of William Vanderbilt. The 65-foot-tall structure is currently owned by Solow Realty and Development.

In 2019, Sheldon Solow made headlines for claims of attempting to push out two commercial tenants of 35 West 57th Street with leases through 2040, after 19 years of residency.

New construction permits have not been filed, and the property sits adjacent to 27-33 West 57th Street, three vacant lots owned by LeFrak Organization that were cleared off in 2016. The Solow Building tower on the same block borders the west boundary of 27-33 West 57th Street.

35 West 57th Street is steps from the 57th Street subway station, serviced by the F train and a short walk from the Fifth Avenue station, serviced by the N, R, and W trains.

Highrise Group NYC is listed as the applicant of record.

Six Exercises to Build Knee Strength and Stability - The Wall Street Journal

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Strong, powerful legs and glutes are the secret weapons of elite rowers. “A rowing workout is most closely related to a squat jump or dead lift,” says Jack Nunn, a former member of the USRowing national team and founder of Roworx Fitness in Long Beach, Calif. “Nearly 70% of the power coming from the rowing stroke is driven through the legs and back,” says Mr. Nunn, whose father, John Nunn, competed in and coached rowing in the Olympics.

The lower-body movement in the rowing stroke helps strengthen the quadriceps and hamstrings, key muscles that protect the knee joint, Mr. Nunn says. If you don’t have access to a boat or a rowing machine, he says, mimicking the lower body rowing motion on land is as simple as adding squats into your routine. “When I underwent two knee surgeries, both doctors told me to start doing standard standing squats to regain strength,” he says.

Core strength and balance also help rowers excel on the water. “We need to be able to balance a 26-foot-long boat that’s only about a foot wide while rowing backward in a straight line,” he says. His coach at the University of California, Berkeley, where Mr. Nunn rowed for four years, said rowing requires the stamina of a runner, the balance of a gymnast and the power of a Greco-Roman wrestler, all rolled into one.

To that end, Mr. Nunn likes to enhance standard exercises like the squat or lunge with resistance bands, Bosu balls and other twists, like a pillow, that challenge balance and coordination. The following exercises focus on building strength around the knee joints while also helping train balance and core stability. He suggests performing three to five sets of each with one minute of rest in between.

The Workout

Dynamic Wall Sit

Why: “Wall sits are an invaluable exercise to build overall leg strength and stability,” says Mr. Nunn. “They are a staple of sports that require leg endurance such as skiing, football, ice hockey and cycling.”

How: Stand facing away from a wall with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a medicine ball, dumbbell or other weighted object straight out in front of you. Lower into a squat with your shoulders and back pressing against the wall. Rotate the weight to the left trying to touch the wall. Return to center. Raise it overhead and tap the wall. Return to center. Rotate the weight to the right to touch the wall. Return to center and raise it again above your head. Repeat for 30 seconds. Build up to a two-minute hold.

Option: While performing the wall sit, slowly roll up onto your toes and hold for 15 seconds. Rock back onto your heels and hold for 15 seconds. Repeat throughout the set. “This will give you the ultimate leg and core workout,” he says.

Dynamic Squat with Resistance Band

Why: “When done properly, squats are one of the best exercises for knee health,” he says. “Squats work the quads, glutes and hamstrings. Pressing out against the resistance band will strengthen the knees.”

How: Place a resistance band just above the knees. Step your feet out until they are shoulder-width apart, toes pointing forward. Keep your back straight and raise your arms up. Squat down until your knees form a 90-degree angle. If you feel any discomfort in the knee joint don’t sit as low. Perform 15 to 30 squats while pressing out against the resistance band.

Option: If you feel your knees collapsing inward, gently place your hands on top of your thighs as a spot and don’t squat as deeply.

Mr. Nunn performs a dynamic squat with a resistance band.

Lunge Onto a Pillow

Why: “Lunges are a beginner-friendly move to strengthen the glutes, quads, hamstrings and core,” he says. Adding an unstable surface challenges single-leg balance, he says.

How: If you are at a gym, use a Bosu ball or Airex Balance Pad. At home, you can substitute a memory foam pillow. Perform a lunge and note where your front foot falls. Now place the unstable object there. Step your right foot forward onto the pillow and sink your back knee down into a lunge. Press down through the right foot to return to standing position. Keep your back straight throughout the movement. Perform 10 to 20 reps per leg.

Options: If you feel wobbly, allow your back knee to touch the floor before returning to standing position, or perform a stationary lunge and keep the front foot on the pillow rather than step forward and back.

Mr. Nunn demonstrates a lunge on a Bosu ball. At home, you can use a pillow.

Banded Side Walk

Why: This exercise helps build stability in the hips and knee joints and is a serious glute burner, Mr. Nunn says.

How: Place a resistance band just above the knees. Step your feet shoulder-width apart creating resistance on the band with your thighs. Sink into a half squat position and walk 10 to 20 steps to the right then reverse directions. Make sure your toes remain pointing forward. Don’t let your knees collapse inward, and maintain a flat back. Hands can be on your hips or clasped in front of your chest.

Banded Modified Side Plank with a Clamshell

Why: “The glutes are constantly activating during the rowing stroke,” says Mr. Nunn. This exercise increases the strength of the gluteus medius while building hip and core stability.”

How: Lie down on the floor on your right side with a resistance band placed just above your knees. Bend your knees at 90 degrees so your feet are behind you. Prop yourself up on your right elbow. Leave your right knee on the floor and raise your hips off the floor so your body forms a straight line, knees to head. Slowly, with control, raise the top left knee up while keeping your feet together then return to start. Use your hip and glutes to gently lift your leg, not your knee or quadricep. The motion should mimic a clamshell opening and closing. Perform 10 times on each side.

Mr. Nunn performs a banded modified side plank with a clamshell.

Mr. Nunn performs a banded modified side plank with a clamshell.

Kneeling Slide Stretch

Why: Whether you’re sitting on a rowing machine, bike or at a desk, your hip flexors are in a flexed position. When they stay in that position for a prolonged period they become tight, and pull down and forward on the pelvis, which compresses the lower back and often causes back pain, he says. This is a great exercise to stretch the groin and hip flexors.

How: Start on hands and knees with sliders or dish towels beneath your knees. Move your knees out just beyond shoulder width. As you press your hands into the floor, slide your knees back and push your hips back as if performing a modified downward dog pose. You should feel a stretch in your groin and inner quads. Contract the quads to return to the starting position. Repeat 10 to 20 reps.

July YA Recommendations: 'Six Crimson Cranes' And 'The River Has Teeth' - NPR

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Six Crimson Cranes, by Elizabeth Lim Knopf Books for Young Readers

Knopf Books for Young Readers

Folkloric family magic and monstrous mothers tie together these two July releases, though their tones could not be more different.

Six Crimson Cranes is a reimagining of a classic if lesser-known fairy tale, The Six Swans. I'm most familiar with the version recorded by the Brothers' Grimm, though there are many variants, and Elizabeth Lim has taken the source material and turned it into something much more nuanced and compassionate than the original tale.

Shiori is a classic rebellious princess who prefers sampling delicious treats from the kitchen and playing games with her brothers to fulfilling royal duties — especially her duty to marry some noble lord she's never even met. When she inadvertently discovers she can do forbidden magic by bringing a paper crane to life and befriending a dragon, she wonders if perhaps she can alter her fate. But her evil stepmother discovers her secret and curses both her and her brothers. Shiori must wander the land with her face hidden, alone and silent, while her brothers live as six cranes.

The only way Shiori can save her brothers and restore her voice is to spin a net out of magic nettles and use it to capture her stepmother and steal the corrupted dragon pearl that fuels her magic. But it won't be easy to do, especially once she is captured and taken to her fiance's fortress. As Shiori desperately tries to spin the net that will save her family, it's she herself who gets further and further tangled up.

"The Six Swans" has long been one of my favorite fairy tales, and Lim's rendition does not disappoint. Much like her debut novel, Spin the Dawn, Six Crimson Cranes feels like the sort of fantasy I loved when I was a teen, with its impulsive princess protagonist and her animal sidekick and quippy dragon friend. This takes all the tropes — the princess in disguise as a kitchen wench, the enchanted brothers, the kindly prince — and twists them just enough to make them fresh.

Perhaps most interesting of all is the question of the evil stepmother. From the start, it seems that she is evil through and through with her serpent minions and coldness towards Shiori, but as the story progresses, we learn that it wasn't always thus, and that the relationship between the two has changed over time. That shift turns out to be crucial to the plot and the breaking of the curse, and it's only through understanding her stepmother that Shiori can save her family.

The River Has Teeth, by Erica Waters Harper Teen

Harper Teen

Understanding your mother is also key in Erica Waters' The River Has Teeth.

Della has it rough. For generations, her family has been linked to the magic of the Bend. They're hedge witches, who can pull power from the land to cure the petty ails of the local community. But something has gone wrong with the magic, corrupting it. Della's mother has gone mad from it and has turned into a monster. Della tries her best to keep her locked up, but girls have been going missing in the Bend, and Della is afraid she knows all too well who is responsible.

Natasha hasn't spent much time thinking about the Bend. But now her sister is missing, and she suspects foul play, and that's where all the clues point. But the police won't listen to her, so she turns to a girl who everyone says is a witch and asks her for help finding her lost sister.

With little between them besides animosity and lies, it doesn't seem likely Della and Natasha will become friends ... let alone something more than friends. And yet, the mysteries of the Bend seem to be pushing them closer and closer, almost as if it wants them to unlock the secret of the corruption at its heart.

The River Has Teeth is a backwoods murder ballad of a book that draws from the old songs and legends that underpin so many areas of rural America. Its girls are rough around the edges, products of fractured families that should have done better by them and tougher than they should have to be. It's impossible not to root for the love they find in each other, even as their own lies and shortcomings jeopardize it.

It also does something of a folklore magic trick. At first, we think it's the kind of song that features cruel mothers and bad sisters. But then it twists, and we suddenly see that it's another sort of ballad altogether — albeit still one that's full of murder. It's well worth a listen.

AST SpaceMobile will launch the prototype satellite BlueWalker 3 for its space-to-cell network on a SpaceX rocket in March 2022. The company announced the launch agreement on July 29.

Describing its BlueWalker 3 test satellite, AST SpaceMobile said it has an aperture of 693 square feet and is designed to communicate directly with cell phones via 3GPP standard frequencies. AST SpaceMobile is working to launch satellites that can communicate directly with standard cell phones to create a broadband network to eliminate connectivity gaps.

The company went public through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger and has been trading as ASTS since April. The company will issue its first quarterly financial report on Aug. 16.

“We’re pleased to launch with U.S.-based SpaceX, which allows us to deploy BlueWalker 3 from our own backyard,“ said Scott Wisniewski, executive vice president and chief strategy officer of AST SpaceMobile. “The spacecraft will be the second prototype to leverage our patented technology.”

Why The Artful Escape took six years to craft - VentureBeat

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

All the sessions from Transform 2021 are available on-demand now. Watch now.

The Artful Escape is coming September 9 for the PC and Xbox. And for Johnny Galvatron, the game’s creator, that date has been a long time coming.

The leader of Beethoven & Dinosaur has worked on the musical narrative adventure for more than six years, and he is finally done. That’s the way it is with art. On Thursday, publisher Annapurna Interactive showed the game during its showcase and revealed the launch date.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” said Galvatron during a press event.

It’s about teenage guitar prodigy Francis Vendetti, who sets out on a psychedelic multidimensional journey to inspire his stage persona and step out of the shadow of his famous musician uncle, a dead folk singer who was like a Bob Dylan character.

Three top investment pros open up about what it takes to get your video game funded.

Watch On Demand

“The start of the game shows some of the weight that’s on Francis’s shoulders and his opinions on his own kind of creative persona,” he said.

Loose autobiography

The game is loosely autobiographical, as Galvatron, who spoke on a call from Melbourne, Australia, spent about five years as a musical celebrity. He said he signed a record deal a week after playing the first show with his band, The Galvatrons.

“I was in a rock band back in the day, signed to Warner Brothers, and toured the world and did all that sort of stuff,” he said. “And I ended up crashing pretty hard after that. I felt like making a game about it but ended up climbing another mountain making that game.”

They hit the road on their second week.

“And then I didn’t come home for like four or five years,” Galvatron said, in an interview with GamesBeat. “I hated it. I think I have a lot of experience in the music industry, but it was definitely a rebellion against what the music industry is. I guess I thought it was a music industry with magic doors, wonderful experiences, and I didn’t have many things to go on. This game is definitely my 17-year-old self’s version of the fantasy of what I thought the music industry would be.”

He wrote a long novel that he never shared with anyone, and that was his apprenticeship in writing. And that turned out to be his transition into game development.

The story is about coming of age, and it was inspired in part by David Bowie’s journey to create his Ziggy Stardust persona, which was just as creative as the music itself.

“Some of the things in the game are about the satellite aspects of a person’s creative persona,” Galvatron said. “It’s about the way they dress, the way they market themselves. The kind of imagery they associate with who they are and the backstory and narrative of who they are.”

E3 2017

The Artful Escape is coming in September, four years after it was announced.

Above: The Artful Escape is coming in September, four years after it was announced.

Galvatron showed off the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2017. He had a crew of around eight people, and that was most of the team that worked on the game.

“I don’t see myself so much as Francis because Francis is a very good guitarist and I’m rubbish,” he said. “Francis has a good musical future ahead of him.”

Galvatron feels disillusioned about the music industry.

During that time, Annapurna helped level up Galvatron’s game. It features a strong cast with voice performances by Michael Johnston, Caroline Kinley, Lena Headey, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Strong, and Carl Weathers. The team recorded an entire folk album as part of the backstory for the uncle.

He learned early on to pull back and let the artists bring themselves into his vision for the game.

“The game has been rebooted several times,” he said. “While we were in the process of making this game, we were definitely learning how to make games, which is not ideal. It was an amazing adventure. I think we’ve made a really fantastic game.”

Pandemic development

Above: The Artful Escape is a musical coming of age story.

The pandemic affected development. But since the team had already been working well before the pandemic, it wasn’t as catastrophic as it might have been.

“It’s tough being in a creative environment and working on things remotely,” he said. “Imagine trying to sculpt something, and someone’s coming in from another room and sculpting it. I thought we were extremely lucky that we can still work. And then we were still getting income.”

He added, “We had enough money to set up people to work from home. So I don’t really have a lot to complain about. I did have a baby. I had a baby in September. So for me, it’s actually been wonderful that I’ve been able to work at home and still change diapers and help out.”

Big ambitions

Above: The Artful Escape intertwines gameplay and music.

Galvatron thought at first he was making a simple iPad app. But the ambitions grew.

“I think for most game developers, their ambition is a problem,” Galvatron said. “We had a relatively small team the whole time, until at the end we got an extra programming punch and video editing help. But we never really grew the team.”

Still, Galvatron liked working with Annapurna, as it made some of his favorite games.

“It was incredible to just bring those people over and get their opinions on player narrative,” he said. “It’s been a really good relationship. It always feels amazingly reassuring to have that to help you with anything. Unbelievably, we’ve finally gotten there and are ready to show everyone.”

“It’s also about stepping out from the shadow of his famous uncle and how everyone has different expectations,” Galvatron said. “Francis’s journey along the way is like realizing that to be a good artist isn’t to give people what they want to but to give them something they themselves could not have imagined.”

By the scenes in the middle of the game that I saw, it has some weird science fiction scenery. One section is Ode to Lightning, who is the captain of the cosmic lung, which is a kind of opera house that floats through the multiverse. The game matches the gameplay and the tempo of the music.

“I’m proud of the tempo, the pacing, and I guess what I would call the dynamics of the game,” he said. “Everything is a different weapon in the arsenal. You can tell stories, do cinematography with the music have gameplay with a narrative, and try to get his themes to line up with crescendos and bring it back down. Get them all in harmony. I think we’ve done really well with achieving that.”

And he thinks it has turned out good.

“I’m really happy with how it’s coming out,” he said.

As for the future, he said that his game studio is good at making musical games and so it is likely they will make something in the future that follows the musical path.

“I think I will have more musical aspects in my games,” he said. “We’ve got a great music team here, and it’s one of our strengths. Cool music mechanics is going to be part of the stuff we make.”

Winding down

Above: Francis Vendetti on the eve of his musical debut.

Now Galvatron is winding down. What would he do differently?

“Hire everyone earlier? Don’t try and do everything,” he said. “Appreciate other people’s artistic abilities and incorporate it in your right. And invest in Bitcoin.”

During his big moment on a press call this week, Galvatron said, “I’m in Melbourne the Rock City. And I’ve been working on The Artful Escape for 48 years. And it’s finally ready. … Tomorrow is my last day working on the game. And it does feel insane. I’m in lockdown. I can’t even go down to the pub and chill out.”

He added, “There was a long time searching for what was fun about some parts and what wasn’t working about others. It was a long process of learning to make games and always just trying to make things better to the point where the game took several years to make. But I’m actually so happy with it. So I think it was worth it.”

WEBXTRA: Texas Parks, Wildlife puts on buffalo soldier demo at African-American Museum - KLTV

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Six cruise ship passengers test positive for Covid: 4 vaccinated, 2 unvaccinated - CNN

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

(CNN) — Six guests have tested positive for Covid-19 on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas cruise ship, the cruise line confirmed Friday.

Four of the guests are vaccinated and two are unvaccinated minors, Royal Caribbean International said in a statement. The seven-night cruise departed from Nassau, Bahamas, on July 25.

One of the four vaccinated guests has mild symptoms, the company said, and three are asymptomatic. The four are not traveling together.

The two unvaccinated minors were in the same party and are asymptomatic, according to Royal Caribbean.

"The guests were immediately quarantined, and their immediate travel party and all close contacts were traced and all tested negative," the cruise line's statement said.

The infections were detected during routine testing that is required of all guests before returning home.

The six guests and their immediate travel parties will disembark in Freeport, Bahamas, on Friday. They will separately travel home "via private transportation," Royal Caribbean said.

All travelers age 16 and older were required to be fully vaccinated and test negative for Covid-19 before boarding Adventure of the Seas, and all crew are fully vaccinated.

Children ineligible for vaccinations were required to take three tests, according to Royal Caribbean's website: A PCR test prior to arriving in the Bahamas, a complimentary Covid-19 test on boarding day and a third complimentary test on day 5 or 6 of the cruise (required for all passengers ages two and up for re-entry into The Bahamas and applicable to home country re-entry requirements).

Vaccinated guests aboard Adventure of the Seas are not required to wear face coverings on the ship, according to Royal Caribbean guidelines posted on the cruise line's website.

Unvaccinated guests are not required to wear masks outdoors but must wear masks in all indoor public spaces except while eating and drinking.

The positive cases come amid a flurry of discussions and revisions of masking requirements in the United States.

The highly transmissable Delta variant has prompted increased scrutiny on breakthrough Covid infections among the fully vaccinated and mounting concern over the threat posed to unvaccinated individuals.

The Delta variant's rapid spread in the US prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week to revise its masking guidance for vaccinated individuals. The agency now advises vaccinated people to wear masks in indoor public settings in areas of substantial or high transmission.

Anti-virus pass demo invades Italian Parliament - Euronews

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Chaos erupted on Thursday inside the Italian Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament, when members of the Brothers of Italy party held a protest over the Green Pass vaccine passport.

With daily COVID-19 cases sharply rising again, Italy will soon require people to have received at least one vaccine dose, have recovered from the illness in the last six months or have proof of a negative test performed in the last 48 hours to access venues like gyms, museums and indoor restaurants in a bid to avoid a return to pandemic lockdowns devastating for the economy.

Starting on Aug. 6, people must have a Green Pass to dine at tables inside restaurants or cafes, go to movies, sports events, casinos, town fairs or other leisure venues.

Brothers of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni is vaccinated, but is opposing restrictions on those who are not vaccinated.

Six Brown athletes represented in 2020 Tokyo Olympics - The Brown Daily Herald

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Five Brown alums and one current student are currently competing in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Hanna Barakat ’22, Janet Leung ’16, Cicely Madden ’18, Alex Miklasevich ’19, Jagger Stephens ’20 and Anders Weiss ’15 are participating in five different athletic events representing four different countries including Palestine, Canada, the United States and Guam in the Games.

Representing Palestine in the women’s 100-meter sprint, Barakat has set four Brown records as a member of different relay teams and competed in the Ivy League championship in the 4×400-meter relay, the 60, the 200 and the 4×100 relay. Last month, she set the Palestinian national record in the 100, 200 and 400-meter sprints.

The 100, Barakat said, “is sort of a perfectionist race in the sense that it’s very short and every step counts. It’s also a mental race because you have to be tuned in for those 11 and a half seconds.”

Barakat said that she feels honored to be able to use her passion for sprinting to bring more representation to Palestine in the Olympics. Having grown up half-Palestinian in the United States, Barakat said that her time at Brown has allowed her to develop a deeper connection to her Palestinian identity and inspired her, in part, to reach out to the Palestinian team.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to have access to a track, to have access to a very wonderful school that provides everything materially that I could need. And I have an opportunity here to represent Palestine, put (its) name on the map in these spaces and do it with pride,” she said. “And it’s a huge responsibility. I do not take it lightly.”

A second-time Olympian, Weiss will be rowing the Coxless Pair event for Team USA. At Brown, he rowed all four years and made varsity as a sophomore. According to Paul Cooke, head coach of men’s varsity crew, although Weiss was not the most outstanding rower on the team his freshman year, his determination and ability to perform well under pressure led to his later successes.

“He’s someone who really excels (in) the biggest moments when the most people are watching,” Cooke said. “He’s won very big races here at Brown. He led our team to a bronze medal at the national championships in the stroke seat of the varsity eight. He was also in the eighth (seat) the next year when we finished second at the national championships. Those were crews that exceeded expectations … one of the reasons was that Anders shows up on big days.”

Also representing the United States, Miklasevich will be rowing in the Men’s Eight in Tokyo. The first person to ever row all four years on the varsity eight at Brown, Miklasevich “was one of the strongest oarsmen in the United States when we recruited him to come to Brown,” said Cooke.  “You never expect anyone to go to the Olympics, but if you did, it was probably someone like Alex.”

In addition to his athletic gifts, Cooke pointed to Miklasevich’s work ethic as a propeller of his success. Cooke recalled Miklasevich setting a goal for himself as a first-year to “spend more time on the ergometer than anyone else until (he) was the strongest freshman. And then when (he) was an upperclassman, (he) would spend more time on the ergometer than anyone else until (he) was the fastest guy on the team.”

“And he did both of those,” Cooke said.

Madden will be rowing the women’s quadruple sculls for Team USA. At Brown, she rowed all four years in the varsity boat and, according to John Murphy, head coach of women’s crew, she benefited the team with a consistently positive attitude as well as her athletic gifts. “She was always cheerful,” he said. “No matter how difficult the workout or the practice or the race, she was upbeat and just had a great attitude and I think everybody respected her enormously for that.”

Murphy also recalled how Madden approached every challenge with confidence, pointing to a specific instance in which she faced a strong opponent in a race: “I said, ‘are you better than she is? Can you beat her?’” he remembered. “She said, ‘Yes, I can.’ She didn’t get intimidated by anybody.”

Stephens will represent Guam by swimming the 100-meter freestyle. At Brown, Stephens specialized in freestyle and butterfly and swam in the Ivy League Championships in the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly.

Leung will represent Canada on its women’s softball team, playing shortstop. Leung’s team won a bronze medal against Mexico in their July 26 pre-Olympics tournament. Having competed in international games since 2013, she was one of the most outstanding players in Brown softball history and earned All-Ivy honors all four seasons as a Bear.

Cooke said that the University’s representation in the Olympics this year is “part of a long tradition of success here at Brown.” Brown’s continued presence on the world athletic stage is a testament to the quality of the school’s program as well as the caliber of hard work demonstrated by the athletes themselves, Cooke added.

Barakat’s event will take place Thursday, July 29 at 8 p.m. EST. Miklasevich’s boat won third place in the repechage round Tuesday and will advance to the finals Thursday, July 29 at 9:25pm EST.

Weiss’s boat in the men’s coxless four finished fifth in the finals which took place Tuesday, July 27. Madden’s boat won fourth place in the finals on Tuesday. Stephens finished second in Heat 2 of the preliminary round which took place Tuesday.

Truckee plane crash death toll rises again, to six - The Mercury News

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

The death toll of Monday’s plane crash near the Truckee-Tahoe Airport is now at six, the Nevada County sheriff’s office confirmed.

There were no survivors aboard the Bombardier CL 600 jet that crashed while attempting to land at 1:18 p.m. Monday.

The Federal Aviation Administration had initially said Tuesday that three people had died, and then revised it to four. Wednesday’s update said the dead were four passengers and two crew members.

No identities have been released. The plane burst into flames upon impact, leaving little evidence, and the DNA investigation is expected to take months, authorities said.

TV station KESQ said relatives and colleagues had confirmed that four of those aboard were from the Palm Springs area. They were said to be pilot Bret Ebaugh and three people associated with a La Quinta real estate agency: Kevin Kvarnlov, Ryan Thomas and Christine Thomas.

A flight tracker showed that the twin turbojet was coming Monday from the Coeur D’Alene Airport in Idaho. Several days earlier, it had flown from Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, made stops in Thermal (Riverside County) and Reno, and continued on to Coeur D’Alene.

On its return from Idaho, it crashed into a wooded area near a golf course adjacent to the Truckee airport. No homes were struck and nobody on the ground was injured.

The jet can hold as many as 14 passengers and two crew members.

Six-Pack Councilman: Steve Kozachik faces two challengers as he seeks a fourth term - Tucson Weekly

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik has had an interesting career in Tucson politics.

He accomplished the near-impossible when he won his midtown Ward 6 in 2009: He was a Republican who knocked out a Democrat opponent, Councilwoman Nina Trasoff. How rare is it for a Republican to knock out an elected Democrat? Kozachik's victory was the first time it had happened since a recall election in the 1970s.

But Kozachik soon was on the outs with the Republicans who had supported him. He frequently squabbled with conservative state lawmakers over issues of local control and midway through his first term, he jumped to the Democratic Party, which welcomed him with open arms.

Since then, Kozachik has served two more terms and hopes to win another this year.

"We've got some really significant issues that are on the table right now that I'm not going to walk away from because frankly, nobody else on the council was complaining about these things until I grabbed ahold of them," Kozachik says.

As he seeks that fourth term, Kozachik is facing two candidates who say it's time for change on the Tucson City Council: Miranda Schubert and Andres Portila.

Schubert, is making her first foray into a political campaign, but she says her time in Tucson Roller Derby is serving her well. "So many transferable skills," she says with a laugh, before adding, "And not just in terms of an athlete's resilience and ability to work in a team and keep a cool head under pressure, but also organizationally, because I've been on the board of directors and an active part of leadership of the league since 2016."

Since moving to Tucson about a decade ago, Schubert worked as an academic advisor, first at Pima College and then at the University of Arizona, where she was among the leaders of the effort to establish United Campus Workers of Arizona, which represents the faculty, staff and student workers. Side hustles have included a KXCI radio show as well as a feminist-focused live talk show at Hotel Congress, Ladytowne.

Schubert says she's in the race because she thinks the council needs to do more to address climate change, correct structural inequities and racial disparities, develop affordable housing, continue the current free public transit program permanently and preserve open space. "We now find ourselves with a choice," Schubert says in an online campaign pitch. "Uphold the status quo or rebuild our systems to be more equitable and just."

Schubert's message has resonated with left-leaning Democrats. She's won the endorsement of Ward 3 Councilmember Karin Uhlich, Las Adelitas Arizona, the Pima Area Labor Federation, the Tucson chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Pima County Young Democrats.

Advertisement:

The third candidate in the race, Andres Portila, has similar worries about the status quo. Portila, 27, grew up between Tucson and Sierra Vista.

Portila says he's long been interested in politics. He played soccer at Paradise Valley Community College but eventually returned to Tucson. He interned for Congressman Ron Barber and later worked on housing issues for Ward 1 Councilwoman Lane Santa Cruz. (Santa Cruz has endorsed Schubert in the race.)

Portila says one way to help make housing more affordable would be to change Tucson's zoning so that more people can build second homes on their property where more family members could live.

Beyond housing issues, Portila says he wants to create more opportunity for Tucsonans along with a better transportation system and stronger environmental safeguards.

Kozachik says he's challenged the status quo throughout his dozen years on the council. He points to various initiatives during his time on the council. He tried to block the Broadway widening between downtown and County Club Road; the project is now underway, but planners trimmed the widening from eight lanes to six and Rio Nuevo is now involved in giving the "Sunshine Mile" a Mid-Century Modern makeover. He has worked with refugees after they are released from Border Patrol custody, finding temporary housing for them at midtown's Benedictine Sanctuary and later helping with the efforts at Pima County's Las Alitas shelter. When the city stopped collecting glass in the recycling program, he set up collection centers and found a company to turn glass into asphalt. He's crusaded against gun violence, although the Arizona Legislature has generally blocked Tucson efforts to restrict firearms. He's gone to bat for the Islamic Center at the corner of First Street and Tyndall Avenue when it became the target of harassment by UA students living in the off-campus towers that surround it. And after Kozachik challenged UA President Robert C. Robbins over testing students for COVID, the UA Athletics Department informed him that he was being laid off after more than three decades of managing projects and facilities. He says he's sure that he lost his job over being outspoken. "It doesn't take don't take a brain surgeon to connect those dots," Kozachik says.

Kozachik can be blunt, such as with the recent flare-up regarding the expansion of Reid Park Zoo. When protestors objected to plans to build a new tiger exhibit over Barnum Hill earlier this year, Kozachik sided with the zoo, saying it had done the required outreach years ago and construction was about to begin. Mayor Regina Romero sided with the protestors and delayed the project, with the council eventually voting (with Kozachik opposed) to spending up to $5.5 million for a new plan on top of $2.5 million on scrapped plans. "We're gonna spend $8 million to preserve Barnum Hill," Kozachik says.

Many fans of Barnum Hill, who say that it was the city's fault for not doing enough outreach to recognize that the man-made hill and lake were a vital community touchstone, are in Schubert's corner because Kozachik has been so blunt. He says he's willing to take his stands and let the chips fall where they may. "one thing about me is, you may disagree with me but you'll know why I have taken my position and I don't take any of them without studying up."

Schubert says the battle over Barnum Hill shouldn't have happened in the first place because city officials should have been more sensitive to the needs of the community. The situation has eroded trust between the city and its citizens and now "it's falling upon community members who have to stick up for their own interests and our own green space, and their elected official is not doing that for them."

Portila says zoo officials are getting a bad rap because the city didn't insist on better outreach that could have avoided the problems in the first place.

Kozachik enjoys the support of many of his colleagues. He's been endorsed by current council members Paul Cunningham, Nikki Lee, Richard Fimbres, as well as former mayor Jonathan Rothschild, former council member Paul Durham as well as Pima County Supervisors Sharon Bronson and Rex Scott.

Kozachik is confident enough in his changes that he has foregone fundraising for the campaign, vowing to keep his spending beneath $500.

"I think people who are participating in the electoral process probably recognize who I am and what I've done," he says. "And you know, if that's sufficient, then great. And if not, I'm not going to go out and ask people to open up their wallets to try and convince them otherwise, We've got a lot of local small businesses and nonprofits who could use those $100 checks. So that's where I want those dollars to go."

But he is getting support from an independent campaign committee, Friends of Steve K, which has reported contributions from developers such as Tom Warne, David Dabdoub, Scott Stiteler, Randi Dorman as well as car dealer Jim Click, a major contributor to GOP candidates and causes.

Kozachik says he doesn't know what the independent campaign is doing, but "whatever they do better be positive. Because one of the things that makes me crazy is negative politics."

Neither Schubert nor Portila have raised much themselves. Schubert raised just over $16,000 as of mid-July and sent in an amended application for public matching funds, but had not received them as of this week.

Portila raised just $260 as of mid-July.

The winner of the race will face independent candidate Val Romero in the November general election.
