Six strategic areas identified for shared faculty hiring in computing - MIT News

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Nearly every aspect of the modern world is being transformed by computing. As computing technology continues to revolutionize the way people live, work, learn, and interact, computing research and education are increasingly playing a role in a broad range of academic disciplines, and are in turn being shaped by this expanding breadth.

To connect computing and other disciplines in addressing critical challenges and opportunities facing the world today, the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing is planning to create 25 new faculty positions that will be shared between the college and an MIT department or school. Hiring for these new positions will be focused on six strategic areas of inquiry, to build capacity at MIT in key computing domains that cut across departments and schools. The shared faculty members are expected to engage in research and teaching that contributes to their home department, that is of mutual value to that department and the college, and that helps form and strengthen cross-departmental ties.

“These new shared faculty positions present an unprecedented opportunity to develop crucial areas at MIT which connect computing with other disciplines,” says Daniel Huttenlocher, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing. “By coordinated hiring between the college and departments and schools, we expect to have significant impact with multiple touch points across MIT.”

The six strategic areas and the schools expected to be involved in hiring for each are as follows:

Social, Economic, and Ethical Implications of Computing and Networks. Associated schools: School of Humanities, Arts and the Social Sciences and MIT Sloan School of Management.

There have been tremendous advances in new digital platforms and algorithms, which have already transformed our economic, social, and even political lives. But the future societal implications of these technologies and the consequences of the use and misuse of massive social data are poorly understood. There are exciting opportunities for building on the growing intellectual connections between computer science, data science, and social science and humanities, in order to bring a better conceptual framework to understand the social and economic implications, ethical dimensions, and regulation of these technologies.

Focusing on the interplay between computing systems and our understanding of individuals and societal institutions, this strategic hiring area will include faculty whose work focuses on the broader consequences of the changing digital and information environment, market design, digital commerce and competition, and economic and social networks. Issues of interest include how computing and AI technologies have shaped and are shaping the work of the future; how social media tools have reshaped political campaigns, changed the nature and organization of mass protests, and spurred governments to either reduce or dramatically enhance censorship and social control; increasing challenges in adjudicating what information is reliable, what is slanted, and what is entirely fake; conceptions of privacy, fairness, and transparency of algorithms; and the effects of new technologies on democratic governance.

Computing and Natural Intelligence: Cognition, Perception, and Language. Associated schools: School of Science; School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; and School of Architecture and Planning.

Intelligence — what it is, how the brain produces it, and how it can be engineered — is simultaneously one of the greatest open questions in natural sciences and the most important engineering challenges of our time. Significant advances in computing and machine learning have enabled a better understanding of the brain and the mind. Concurrently, neuroscience and cognitive science have started to give meaningful engineering guidance to AI and related computing efforts. Yet, huge gaps remain in connecting the science and engineering of intelligence.

Integrating science, computing, and social sciences and humanities, this strategic hiring area aims to address the gap between science and engineering of intelligence, in order to make transformative advances in AI and deepen our understanding of natural intelligence. Hiring in this area is expected to advance a holistic approach to understanding human perception and cognition through work such as the study of computational properties of language by bridging linguistic theory, cognitive science, and computer science; improving the art of listening by re-engineering music through music classification and machine learning, music cognition, and new interfaces for musical expression; discovering how artificial systems might help explain natural intelligence and vice versa; and seeking ways in which computing can aid in human expression, communications, health, and meaning.

Computing in Health and Life Sciences. Associated schools: School of Engineering; School of Science; and MIT Sloan School of Management.

Computing is increasingly becoming an indispensable tool in the health and life sciences. A key area is facilitating new approaches to identifying molecular and biomolecular agents with desired functions and for discovering new medications and new means of diagnosis. For instance, machine learning provides a unique opportunity in the pursuit of molecular and biomolecular discovery to parameterize and augment physics-based models, or possibly even replace them, and enable a revolution in molecular science and engineering. Another major area is health-care delivery, where novel algorithms, high performance computing, and machine learning offer new possibilities to transform health monitoring and treatment planning, facilitating better patient care, and enabling more effective ways to help prevent disease. In diagnosis, machine learning methods hold the promise of improved detection of diseases, increasing both specificity and sensitivity of imaging and testing.

This strategic area aims to hire faculty who help create transformative new computational methods in health and life sciences, while complementing the considerable existing work at MIT by forging additional connections. The broad scope ranges from computational approaches to fundamental problems in molecular design and synthesis for human health; to reshaping health-care delivery and personalized medicine; to understanding radiation effects and optimizing dose delivery on target cells; to improving tracing, imaging, and diagnosis techniques.

Computing for Health of the Planet. Associated schools: School of Engineering; School of Science; and School of Architecture and Planning.

The health of the planet is one of the most important challenges facing humankind today. Rapid industrialization has led to a number of serious threats to human and ecosystem health, including climate change, unsafe levels of air and water pollution, coastal and agricultural land erosion, and many others. Ensuring the health and safety of our planet necessitates an interdisciplinary approach that connects scientific understanding, engineering solutions, social, economic, and political aspects, with new computational methods to provide data-driven models and solutions for providing clean air, usable water, resilient food, efficient transportation systems, and identifying sustainable sources of energy.

This strategic hiring area will help facilitate such collaborations by bringing together expertise that will enable us to advance physical understanding of low-carbon energy solutions, earth-climate modelling, and urban planning through high performance computing, transformational numerical methods, and/or machine learning techniques.

Computing and Human Experience. Associated schools: School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences and School of Architecture and Planning.

Computing and digital technologies are challenging the very ways in which people understand reality and our role in it. These technologies are embedded in the everyday lives of people around the world, and while frequently highly useful, they can reflect cultural assumptions and technological heritage, even though they are often viewed as being neutral prescriptions for structuring the world. Indeed, as becomes increasingly apparent, these technologies are able to alter individual and societal perceptions and actions, or affect societal institutions, in ways that are not broadly understood or intended. Moreover, although these technologies are conventionally developed for improved efficacy or efficiency, they can also provide opportunities for less utilitarian purposes such as supporting introspection and personal reflection.

This strategic hiring area focuses on growing the set of scholars in the social sciences, humanities, and computing who examine technology designs, systems, policies, and practices that can address the dual challenges of the lack of understanding of these technologies and their implications, including the design of systems that may help ameliorate rather than exacerbate inequalities. It further aims to develop techniques and systems that help people interpret and gain understanding from societal and historical data, including in humanities disciplines such as comparative literature, history, and art and architectural history.

Quantum Computing. Associated schools: School of Engineering and School of Science.

One of the most promising directions for continuing improvements in computing power comes from quantum mechanics. In the coming years, new hardware, algorithms, and discoveries offer the potential to dramatically increase the power of quantum computers far beyond current machines. Achieving these advances poses challenges that span multiple scientific and engineering fields, and from quantum hardware to quantum computing algorithms. Potential quantum computing applications span a broad range of fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, atmospheric modeling, urban system simulation, nuclear engineering, finance, optimization, and others, requiring a deep understanding of both quantum computing algorithms and the problem space.

This strategic hiring area aims to build on MIT’s rich set of activities in the space to catalyze research and education in quantum computing and quantum information across the Institute, including the study of quantum materials; developing robust controllable quantum devices and networks that can faithfully transmit quantum information; and new algorithms for machine learning, AI, optimization, and data processing to fully leverage the promise of quantum computing.

A coordinated approach

Over the past few months, the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing has undertaken a strategic planning exercise to identify key areas for hiring the new shared faculty. The process has been led by Huttenlocher, together with MIT Provost Martin Schmidt and the deans of the five schools — Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of the School of Engineering; Melissa Nobles, Kenan Sahin Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; Hashim Sarkis, dean of the School of Architecture and Planning; David Schmittlein, John C. Head III Dean of MIT Sloan; and Michael Sipser, dean of the School of Science — beginning with input from departments across the Institute.

This input was in the form of proposals for interdisciplinary computing areas that were solicited from department heads. A total of 29 proposals were received. Over a six-week period, the committee worked with proposing departments to identify strategic hiring themes. The process yielded the six areas that cover several critically important directions.

“These areas not only bring together computing with numerous departments and schools, but also involve multiple modes of academic inquiry, offering opportunities for new collaborations in research and teaching across a broad range of fields,” says Schmidt. “I’m excited to see us launch this critical part of the college’s mission.”

The college will also coordinate with each of the five schools to ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion is at the forefront for all of the hiring areas.

Hiring for the 2020-21 academic year

While the number of searches and involved schools will vary from year to year, the plan for the coming academic year is to have five searches, one with each school. These searches will be in three of the six strategic hiring areas as follows:

Social, Economic, and Ethical Implications of Computing and Networks will focus on two searches, one with the Department of Philosophy in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and one with the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Computing and Natural Intelligence: Cognition, Perception and Language will focus on one search with the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences in the School of Science.

Computing for Health of the Planet will focus on two searches, one with the Department of Urban Studies and Planning in the School of Architecture and Planning, and one with a department to be identified in the School of Engineering.

Lighting sought for six Roanoke-area Interstate 81 exits - WSLS 10

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

ROANOKE, Va. – There’s a chance that some Roanoke area Interstate 81 exits may finally have lighting.

The Roanoke Valley Transportation Planning Organization is considering requesting lighting be added to I-81 projects.

As part of the request, the organization is asking for the public’s input through an online survey.

Virginia’s Blue Ridge, the region’s official destination marketing organization, is pushing too add these lights as it feels that, “it is critical to add this lighting at these Interstate 81 interchanges to promote the reduction of nighttime crashes and increase tourism in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.”

The Salem and Daleville interchanges would also be included under the current proposal, which includes exits 137, 140, 141, 143, 146, and 150.

Jaguars cut Leonard Fournette: Here's how Jacksonville fizzled despite six top-five picks since 2012 - CBS Sports

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Watch Now: What's Next For Jaguars After Releasing Leonard Fournette (8:04)

Maybe the Jacksonville Jaguars didn't quite go the Philadelphia 76ers' route of trying to build a contender, but they certainly did a bang-up job of collecting all the top-five picks they could thanks to their constant futility. And at least the 76ers were able to select two all-stars in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Jacksonville, on the other hand, tried to win and still couldn't select the right players to rise its franchise from the basement of the NFL

The Jaguars don't have much to sell since the end of the Jack Del Rio era (2011). Six top-five picks resulted in a 38-90 record (second worst in the NFL) with just one winning season. Jacksonville's roster looked bright when it finished 10-6 and made that surprising run to the AFC Championship Game, but the franchise failed to replicate that success over the next two seasons with just 11 wins and a series of moves that leads to another process that Jacksonville hopes will rebuild the franchise.

So how did the Jaguars get to this point? How did this franchise not capitalize on all the high draft picks they collected for being one of the worst teams in football over the last several years? Let's take a look at what happened to those six top-five picks and where the Jaguars' 2017 AFC Championship game roster went.

Draft picks

Justin Blackmon (No. 5 pick, 2012): Blackmon had a promising first season in Jacksonville, leading all rookies in receiving yards (865), while tying for first in receptions (64) and recording five touchdowns. He played just four games for the remainder of his career after a series of arrests and an indefinite suspension by the league for violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Luke Joeckel (No. 2 pick, 2013): Joeckel was the worst of the three tackles selected amongst the top four picks (Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson were the others) in that 2013 draft, giving up eight sacks in 2014 -- his first full season at left tackle. Joeckel eventually moved to left guard before leaving Jacksonville after the 2016 season and retired from football after spending the 2017 campaign with Seattle.

Blake Bortles (No. 3 pick, 2014): Bortles was supposed to be the franchise quarterback of the Jaguars, but he set the franchise back for years to come. Of the 39 quarterbacks who have had over 1,000 pass attempts since 2014, Bortles is 38th with an 80.5 passer rating. Of those 39 quarterbacks, Bortles is 35th with just 6.7 yards per attempt. He threw double-digit interceptions in each of his five seasons as a starter (led the NFL with 18 in 2015) and his 13 interceptions returned for touchdowns led the league. And to think Bortles was less than 10 minutes away from taking the Jaguars to the Super Bowl and that he has never thrown an interception in two postseason games. He's currently a free agent.

Dante Fowler (No. 3 pick, 2015): Fowler had some unfortunate luck in his first season with Jacksonville, tearing his ACL in rookie minicamp -- a sign of things to come. Fowler started just one game in Jacksonville, racking up 14 sacks and 22 quarterback hits 39 games. Jacksonville traded Fowler to the Los Angeles Rams for a 2019 third-round pick and 2020 fifth-round pick at the trade deadline in 2018, where he racked up 13.5 sacks (11 last season) in just 24 games. Fowler signed a three-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons this past offseason.

Jalen Ramsey (No. 5 pick, 2016): Ramsey became one of the best cornerbacks in football with Jacksonville, making two Pro Bowls and was a First Team All-Pro selection in just his first two years in the league. Ramsey, wanting to be the game's highest paid cornerback, had a verbal altercation with head coach Doug Marrone in Week 2 of the 2019 season and requested a trade shortly after. He was dealt to the Rams for two first-round picks (2020, 2021) and a fourth-round pick in 2021.

Leonard Fournette (No. 4 pick, 2017): The Jaguars chose a running back in the top five when conventional wisdom said they shouldn't. Because of their commitment to Bortles, they passed on Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes and settled on getting him help at the skill positions. Fournette has averaged just 3.95 yards per carry since entering the league, 13th out of 17 running backs with over 500 carries. Fournette does have the seventh most rushing yards in the league (2,631) since he was drafted and finished sixth in the league with 1,674 yards from scrimmage last season -- and has two 1,000-yard seasons. His 76 catches in 2019 were fifth most amongst running backs. The Jaguars waived Fournette Monday.

Who's left from the AFC Championship Game Roster

The Jaguars have just 12 players from that roster that went to the AFC Championship Game just 31 months ago, a team that held a 10-point lead against the New England Patriots with nine minutes to play. The players remaining from that team are

Westbrook, O'Shaughnessy, Cann, Linder, and Robinson are projected to start on offense while Jones, Jack, and Wilson will start on defense and Lambo led the league in field goal percentage last season.

Fifteen of the 22 starters on the Jaguars from the AFC title game are no longer on the roster. The Jaguars instead are looking at another top five pick in the draft along with another first-round pick, two second-round picks and 11 total in 2021. The only constant in the Jaguars front office over the past eight years is general manager Dave Caldwell, which needs to change if Jacksonville wants to actually build a contender.

San Juan police arrest felon in possession of six weapons - Monitor

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

A San Juan man is in jail on numerous charges after a man reported that the 57-year-old suspect threatened him with a chain and then brandished a handgun at him.

Police arrested Margil Ponciano Ramirez on Aug. 25 after a search warrant turned up six guns in his house, including a 9mm handgun with a loaded magazine attached, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Ramirez remains in jail on $80,000 in bonds for six counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Authorities began investigating the 57-year-old on Aug. 16, after a man called police at around 3:52 p.m. to report that Ramirez threatened him.

The reporting party told the patrol officer that Ramirez approached him in a fighting stance with a length of chain and threatened to damage his vehicle, according to the charging document, which states that Ramirez then reached for the back of his waistline and brandished a black handgun, telling the man, “I’m going to [expletive] you up.”

On Aug. 20, a detective interviewed the man, who reiterated what he told the patrol officer, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Court records indicate Ramirez was convicted for driving while intoxicated in 2007 and 1984. He was also convicted in 1987 of assautling a public servant, records show.

SANCTUARY: 30th-Anniversary Edition Of 'Into The Mirror Black' To Include Demo Tracks, Live Recordings - BLABBERMOUTH.NET

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
SANCTUARY: 30th-Anniversary Edition Of 'Into The Mirror Black' To Include Demo Tracks, Live Recordings

SANCTUARY will release the 30th-anniversary edition of "Into The Mirror Black" on October 9.

"Into The Mirror Black", originally released in 1990, is a truly special, much-revered metal record, which received massive critical acclaim back when it came out and is still loved dearly to the very day. Its gloomy atmosphere and thought-provoking lyrics, its brilliant mix borderlining heavy and thrash metal, its stellar guitar work and the expressive vocals of the one and only Warrel Dane are just some of the reasons why this record stood the test of time.

In 2020, "Into The Mirror Black" celebrates its 30th anniversary and while the plans to commemorate this event live with current singer Joseph Michael (WITHERFALL) had to be postponed, these limited triple vinyl and double-CD deluxe editions, created with guitarist Lenny Rutledge, honor the timeless grandeur of "Into The Mirror Black" extremely well and will be released through Century Media Records as strictly limited formats.

Rutledge comments: "We are so excited to finally be releasing this special edition of 'Into The Mirror Black'! The remaster of the original songs sounds awesome and the 1990 'Black Reflections' live concert is finally going to be released in all its authentic live glory. The live material was mixed and mastered by Zeuss and is presented as recorded. No re-recordings or overdubs. Look for SANCTUARY on tour in fall of 2021 playing the entire 'Into The Mirror Black' set. We can't wait to bring the live show to Europe, USA and South America in 2021."

"Into The Mirror Black" was carefully remastered by Chris "Zeuss" Harris (QUEENSRŸCHE, ICED EARTH, OVERKILL) to make it sound a bit fuller and heavier without losing the original feel and the extra tracks are real gems for SANCTUARY devotees: rhree previously unreleased studio demos (including "I'm Insane") and an entire, newly mixed 10-track live album from 1990, which was only partially released on a rare promo EP.

"The concert from 1990 is a total snapshot in time when the band was at its peak," says Zeuss. "It's captured before the initial breakup which led to Warrel and Jim [Sheppard, bass] forming NEVERMORE. Hearing it brought me right back to the first time I personally saw them."

Apart from its sonic treasures, this new edition also offers tons of rare and previously unpublished photos as well as liner notes from Rutledge and bassist Jim Sheppard, who share memories, good and bad, tour stories and give insight into the creation of this opus resulting in a companion release to 2017's "Inception".

"Into The Mirror Black (30th Anniversary Edition)" will be released as limited LP edition containing three 180-gram vinyls housed in a widespined gatefold sleeve and includes an eight-page LP-sized booklet, and the 2CD format comes in a digipak and slipcase packaging.

Two and a half years ago, the Jaguars had a fourth-quarter lead over the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. The Jaguars would go on to lose, but their future looked bright, thanks to a dominant defense that had six Pro Bowlers.

Today’s trade of Yannick Ngakoue to the Vikings means all six of those Pro Bowlers are now gone.

The Jaguars have moved on from all those Pro Bowlers because of a combination of salary disputes, personal issues and an effort to reshape the roster: Jalen Ramsey was traded to the Rams, A.J. Bouye was traded to the Broncos, Calais Campbell was traded to the Ravens, Malik Jackson was released and now plays for the Eagles and Telvin Smith retired.

The results have not been good. Since a Week Two win over the Patriots in 2018 had some describing the Jaguars as the team of the future in the AFC, Jacksonville is just 9-21.

The Jaguars are a reminder of how quickly things can change in the NFL. Just two years ago tey appeared to have the best young defense in football, and now the building blocks of that defense are gone.

DHS reports six more deaths connected to COVID-19 - WKOW

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

(APP USERS CLICK FOR CHART VIEW)

MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin health officials reported six more deaths and 39 hospitalizations on Saturday.

The Department of Health Services reported 8,752 new test results since yesterday, of which 819—or 9.4 percent—came back positive, according to new numbers released today.

The remaining tests returned negative results. However, a negative test only means the person tested did not have the disease at the time. They could still contract COVID-19.

Measuring the percentage of new cases returned in tests each day helps differentiate if increases in cases are due to greater spread or more testing, according to DHS.

The seven-day average of positive cases is at 8.2 percent.

DHS reported six new deaths, raising the total at 1,119 people (1.5 percent of positive cases) killed by the disease.

The state reported 7,933 new negative test results.

Of all positive cases reported since the pandemic began, 66,075 or 88.4 percent, are considered recovered.

The state reported 39 new hospitalizations. Wisconsin hospitals are currently treating 309 patients with COVID-19. Of those, 103 are in intensive care units.

DHS now has a county-level dashboard to assess the COVID-19 activity level in counties and Healthcare Emergency Readiness Coalition regions that measure what DHS calls the burden in each county. View the dashboard HERE.

The new strain of the coronavirus causes the disease COVID-19. Symptoms include cough, fever and shortness of breath. A full list of symptoms is available on the Centers for Disease Control website.

In severe cases, pneumonia can develop. Those most at risk include the elderly, people with heart or lung disease as well as anyone at greater risk of infection.

For most, the virus is mild, presenting similarly to a common cold or the flu.

Anyone who thinks they may have the disease should call ahead to a hospital or clinic before going in for a diagnosis. Doing so gives the staff time to take the proper precautions so the virus does not spread.

Those needing emergency medical services should continue to use 911.

Six of every 10 voters in Minnesota primary cast absentee ballots - Minneapolis Star Tribune

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Six out of every 10 Minnesotans who voted in the August primary election cast their ballot absentee — a surge that helped voter turnout to nearly triple over the last presidential election year in 2016.

According to numbers received last week from the Secretary of State's Office, an estimated 543,652 of the 912,714 ballots cast in the primary were submitted under the state's no-excuse absentee voting rules, which allow voters to request a ballot before Election Day and submit it by mail or in person without having to visit their traditional polling place.

That option has become increasingly popular since it was enacted in 2014 but exploded in popularity this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, more Minnesotans cast more absentee ballots this year than voted in any capacity during the 2016 primary.

It also helped drive Minneapolis' highest primary turnout in 50 years. Roughly two-thirds of the city's ballots were cast early, and fewer than 1% of absentee ballots were spoiled.

Many counties in the Twin Cities metro area also saw most of their primary vote arrive absentee, despite mail-in balloting traditionally being more common in rural areas. Some areas of greater Minnesota, including Cook County and Grant County, saw more than 90% of their ballots cast absentee.

Only about 5% of the total early vote was in person.

The general election on Nov. 3 will likely test Minnesota's capacity to handle an even greater surge of voters mailing their ballots.

Strained operations at the U.S. Postal Service have sparked concerns among lawmakers and advocates that some ballots may be lost or not arrive in time to be counted.

Even with a two-day extension beyond primary day this year, at least a quarter of Minnesota's requested early ballots weren't counted, with some remaining unreturned, arriving late or being rejected for various reasons.

Other states have also seen significant delays in announcing the winners of some races as their election authorities have been forced to adapt to counting large numbers of mail-in ballots. In contrast, the winners of Minnesota's major races were all known on election night.

Six Oregon ZIP codes with the most new cases per capita - OregonLive

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Coronavirus continued spreading rapidly in two eastern and central Oregon communities already hard hit by the pandemic, according to an analysis of new state data by The Oregonian/OregonLive.

The ZIP code for Ontario, in Malheur County, recorded the most new confirmed or presumed infections statewide for the week ending Aug. 23. And Warm Springs’ ZIP code in Jefferson County saw the most new cases per capita, just edging out Ontario.

In all, the Oregon Health Authority reported 1,704 new coronavirus cases last week. That’s the third consecutive week of declines since late July.

The Oregonian/OregonLive for months has been monitoring weekly changes in state coronavirus data, reporting by ZIP code the areas with the greatest weekly changes.

Our analysis has shifted to highlight the areas with the most new cases in relation to the area’s population.

Here’s a look at those ZIP codes, plus the traditional format including areas with the most new overall cases (at the end of the story). (Click here for an interactive map).

97761 Warm Springs

This central Oregon ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 56 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, nearly double from a week earlier.

In total, the Jefferson County ZIP code added 24 new cases, increasing its total to 257.

Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center through Aug. 21 reported 248 positive cases. Many households in the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs have lacked clean water in their homes for weeks and the Tribal Council has told people who are infected to isolate at home.

The Oregon Health Authority did not report any workplace outbreaks in this ZIP code.

97914 Ontario

This ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections of 53 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, up slightly from the previous week.

The Malheur County ZIP code added 102 new cases in all, raising its total to 787.

The eastern Oregon area has three active workplace outbreaks, according to the Oregon Health Authority. Snake River Correctional Institution added 10 confirmed or presumed infections, the Kraft Heinz Company added one and Walmart added none.

The Oregon Health Authority also disclosed for the first time an outbreak at Wellsprings Assisted Living totaling four cases.

97913 Nyssa

This ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 34 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, up from the previous week.

In all, the Malheur County ZIP code added 17 new cases, raising its total to 160.

There are no active workplace outbreaks reported in this eastern Oregon community along the Idaho border.

97071 Woodburn

This ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 33 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, an increase from the previous week.

In all, the Marion County ZIP code added 97 new cases, increasing its cumulative count to 680.

The Oregon Health Authority reported an active workplace outbreak at Santos Labor Force with one new case. The state also reported two new cases linked to French Prairie Nursing and Rehab and one new case linked to Silver Creek Senior Living.

97818 Boardman

The ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 26 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, down sharply from a week earlier. But it still leads the state in cumulative per capita infections.

In all, the Morrow County ZIP code added 11 new confirmed or presumed infections, increasing the cumulative total to 288.

Boardman is 30 minutes west of Umatilla and Hermiston. They collectively comprise the state’s biggest hotspot, led by Hermiston.

The Oregon Health Authority reported new cases at five businesses with active outbreaks: Lamb Weston East with five new confirmed or presumed infections; Independent Transport with three; Lamb Weston Boardman Pac Center with two; Port of Morrow Warehousing with two; and Lamb Weston West with one new case.

97882 Umatilla

The ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 21 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, up slightly from a week earlier.

In all, the Umatilla County ZIP code added 17 new confirmed or presumed infections, increasing the cumulative total to 348.

Chadwick Boseman married before his death, family reveals - Page Six

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Chadwick Boseman quietly married in the final months of his life, the actor’s family revealed.

A statement from Boseman’s family noted the “Black Panther” actor tied the knot before the 43-year-old died Friday following a four-year battle with colon cancer.

“He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side,” the statement said. “The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Boseman, who was notoriously private about his personal life, even managing to keep his cancer battle secret, had been dating singer Taylor Simone Ledward. They were reportedly engaged in October 2019.

The “Black Panther” actor and Ledward were first spotted together in 2015, soon after she graduated from Cal Polytechnic University Pomona in 2014. There, she majored in music industry studies and was lead singer of the school jazz band.

Both Boseman and Ledward’s family were supportive of the relationship.

“They respect each other. She’s very happy, and he is, too,” Ledward’s grandmother told InTouch Weekly in 2018.

Ledward’s sister also gushed about her future brother-in-law.

“[Chadwick’s] real life queen is gorgeous, and together they embody true love. Not to mention they would make some beautiful babies,” she reportedly wrote on Instagram.

The couple was photographed together several times over the years at Hollywood events and often sitting courtside at NBA games.

Most recently, they were spotted in February at the NBA All-Star Game in Chicago.

At the NAACP Image Awards in March 2019, the pair shared a rare moment of public affection when Boseman kissed Ledward before going on stage to accept the award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.

“Simone, you’re with me every day. I have to acknowledge you right now. Love you,” he said in his acceptance speech. She mouthed back: “I love you.”

We're fortunate at that defensive end position because you got a guy like JaQuan Bailey you got a guy like Will McDonald you got a guy like [Eyioma Uwazurike], you got a guy like Zach, and there's videotape evidence of those guys being elite in elite moments. I think now, it's how great does he want to become and so we're really fortunate to have Zack and I think he's done some great things already. I think he'll continue to do great things for this program."
