Chargers cut six to get to 80 players - NBC Sports - NFL

The Chargers aren’t waiting to drop to the 80-player limit put in place for this summer by an agreement between the NFL and NFLPA.

The team announced on Saturday that they have dropped defensive tackle P.J. Johnson, tackle Koda Martin, wide receiver Andre Patton, tight end Jared Rice, safety Roderic Teamer and tight end Andrew Vollert from the roster. The moves leave the Chargers with 80 players, which means they will not have to work in split squads at training camp.

Patton and Teamer each saw action with the Chargers last season. Patton had six catches for 56 yards in 13 games while Teamer had 40 tackles, an interception and a sack while making six starts and seven overall appearances.

Martin and Vollert spent last season on injured reserve. Johnson was on the team’s practice squad last year and Rice was an undrafted free agent signing this year.

Perfect the 5-minute demo. Prime Venture Partners’ Sanjay Swamy tells you how - YourStory

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Sanjay Swamy

Sanjay Swamy, Managing Director and Co-founder at Prime Venture Partners

Delivering short, powerful presentations isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. Some individuals are gifted with excellent visual presentation skills, some with a sense of humour, and others with a vibrant personality. But what if one doesn’t fit into any of these categories? How can you make a presentation that makes an impact?

“If you’re like what most tech entrepreneurs are (including myself), you’re most likely a geek who makes slides with a terrible choice of colours and fonts, and demos with a two-column table,” says Sanjay Swamy, Founding Partner at Prime Venture Partners

In this week’s Prime Knowledge Series, Sanjay explains the magic formula for creating an outstanding presentation: a structured approach.

He asks us to consider an imaginary startup, let’s name it Remit, which has developed a low-cost cross-border money transfer service. It is faster, easier to use, and less expensive than traditional services such as Western Union.

Here’s the perfect five-minute pitch, according to Sanjay:

Tell them what you’re going to tell them in 60 seconds

This can be done with only one slide and a simple script. The slide could simply say:

Problem/Opportunity

  • 20 million people -> $20 billion/year to India alone
  • Cost of 3 - 5%
  • EzRemit brings this cost down to 1%

The script should be simple. “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. My name is John Doe and I’m the Founder and CEO of EzRemit. Did you know that 20 million people transfer 20 billion dollars every year to India and it costs them between 3 percent and 5 percent to do so? We think there should be a better way and have developed EzRemit, a service that will make money transfer simpler and cheaper for as low as 1 percent. I’m going to give you a quick product demonstration and describe some salient features and benefits of our approach.”

Tell them the details in 180 seconds

“They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, a demo is worth a thousand pictures,” Sanjay says. He adds that in today’s day and age, a live demo or at least a video demo is important to include in a presentation.

Sanjay advises founders to download the right software to get the demo right, so that it’s easy to project on a big screen when one connects their phone, tablet, a laptop. “It is easy to do, so please take the time to figure it out and do it right,” he adds.

While it is important to have the demo do most of the talking, one should set things up well. He advises that one should always create a scenario that people can relate to.

“I would say, Let’s take an example of Ram, an Indian working in Dubai. Ram has a family in Kerala and he sends $1,000 home every month. Today, he has to spend half a day and it costs him 3 percent to transfer the money to India. Let me show you how his world would be with EzRemit’,” he says.

It is important to explain the demo to people - explain what they are seeing, what role the presenter is playing, what role one’s partner is playing, and what it would be in the real world. People need to understand assumptions before one presents the demo.

Sanjay says all data should be "pre-filled", so that one does not end up fumbling around amid the demonstration. “Wherever possible, involve someone from the audience. For example, ask someone in the audience for a mobile number to send an SMS receipt to."

Once the demo is done successfully, it is important to quickly summarise what people saw.

Tell them you told them in 60 seconds

This last 60 seconds of any presentation is the most critical phase, but often under-valued.

For the example he has given so far, a good summary would be: “Just to recap, we at EzRemit have developed a mobile-based solution that allows you to transfer money globally at a fraction of the cost. I demonstrated to you a use case of an Indian living in Dubai who sent money to his family in India with three clicks and saved two percent in the process. I also demonstrated the messages received by the recipients in India.

"The product is now in a beta testing phase and will be going live in January. We are really excited about what we have achieved here -- and how this has the potential to truly make an impact in people’s lives. I’m sure you share our excitement and thank you for your time and attention. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.”

If this is done in a succinct manner, one would have aced the demo and presentation.

Chargers' six cuts include Roderic Teamer and Andre Patton - Los Angeles Times

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

The Chargers released six players Saturday, including safety Roderic Teamer and wide receiver Andre Patton.

Teamer started six games last season as an injury replacement. Last month, he was hit with a four-game suspension for violating the NFL policy on substance abuse.

Patton caught six passes in 13 games in 2019. The Chargers used two of their draft picks in April on wide receivers Joe Reed and K.J. Hill.

Also released were tight ends Jared Rice and Andrew Vollert, defensive tackle P.J. Johnson and offensive lineman Koda Martin.

Their roster now at 80, the Chargers are scheduled to have their first full-squad conditioning workout Monday in Costa Mesa.

Six more Utahns have died from COVID-19 and another 506 have tested positive for the virus, the Utah Department of Health reported Saturday.

Three of the people who died were from Salt Lake County. They include a woman, older than 85 and a man between 65-84 — both were residents in long-term care facilities. The third was male, older than 85, who was hospitalized.

Two men from Utah County also were among the reported deaths. One was between 65-85 and living in a longer-term care facility; the other was between 45-64 and was hospitalized at the time of his death.

The sixth death was a San Juan County woman, 65-84, who was hospitalized.

In all 310 Utahns have died from the coronavirus.

The rolling seven-day average for positive laboratory tests is now 431 per day or 9.9%. That number is well below the target of 500 that Gov. Gary Herbert set for Aug. 1.

So far, 533,260 people have been tested for the coronavirus, an increase of 4,350 people from Friday, UDOH officials reported.

There currently are 210 people hospitalized with COVID-19, down from a reported 213 on Friday. Total hospitalizations since the beginning of the outbreak are 2,412.

As of Saturday, the state considers 28,747 people “recovered,” which, by health experts’ definition, means theya re still alive at least three weeks from being diagnosed with the disease.

The Tribune will update this story.

SpaceX Crew Dragon carrying NASA astronauts to depart space station today. Here's how to watch it live. - Space.com

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

SpaceX's first Crew Dragon capsule to carry NASA astronauts will undock from the International Space Station tonight (Aug. 1), setting the stage for a historic weekend splashdown.

The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule Endeavour is scheduled to undock from the station tonight at 7:34 p.m. EDT (2334 GMT) as its Demo-2 test flight enters its final stage. The spacecraft is expected to return to Earth with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on Sunday (Aug. 2).

Behnken and Hurley are flying on SpaceX's first-ever crewed spaceflight. They launched to the station May 30 and are expected to spend just under a day in orbit before returning to Earth Sunday afternoon, NASA officials said.

You can watch the SpaceX undocking live here and on Space.com's homepage, courtesy of NASA TV. You can also watch it directly from NASA here. NASA's webcast will begin at 5:15 p.m. EDT (2115 GMT) tonight.

Full coverage: SpaceX's historic Demo-2 Crew Dragon astronaut test flight

The astronauts got an early start on their departure with a farewell ceremony this morning to mark the upcoming undocking.

"It's hard to put into words just what it was like to be a part of this Expedition 63," Hurley said of the last two months working with the station's crew. "It'll be kind of a memory that will last a lifetime for me."

Behnken said it's been a great test flight with SpaceX's Crew Dragon, the first commercial spacecraft every to carry astronauts in orbit, but there's still a big trial ahead.

Launching into space may have been the hardest part of this test flight, "but the most important part is bringing us home," Behnken said.

Behnken and Hurley, or "Bob and Doug" as they've been affectionately dubbed by the public, launched to the space station May 30 as part of SpaceX's historic first crewed mission to space. The launch, which is part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, also marks the first crewed commercial mission for NASA.

SpaceX's Demo-2 mission will conclude with the crew's return to Earth, which will be the first U.S. splashdown in nearly 45 years. The pair of veteran astronauts are set to splash down in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Panama City, Florida, one of seven options available, at 2:41 p.m. EDT (1841 GMT) if weather conditions are favorable.

This could prove tricky, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Hurricane Center is continuing to Hurricane Isais which is currently headed towards Florida.

NASA officials have said they plan to make a final decision on whether to proceed with undocking about six hours before the event is scheduled to occur. That will come at about 1:30 p.m. EDT (1730 GMT). The target landing site could also change depending on weather conditions, they added.

A final landing site, and whether or not the splashdown will be delayed, will be decided upon based on a number of key factors including wind speed, the slope of the ocean waves, rain, lightning, availability of nearby recovery helicopters, the vessel's pitch and roll, the visible ceiling and overall visibility.

Visit Space.com today for complete coverage of the Crew Dragon landing.

Editor's note: This article has been updated with a new target splashdown time of Sunday (Aug. 2) at 2:41 p.m. EDT, one minute earlier than originally planned. NASA and SpaceX updated the splashdown time on Saturday after selecting the primary targeted site off the coast Pensacola, Florida.

France starts testing travelers from 16 nations for virus

Travelers entering France from 16 countries where the coronavirus is circulating widely are having to undergo virus tests upon arrival at French airports and ports.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced last month that the tests would be required starting Aug. 1 for the arriving passengers France is allowing in from the listed countries, unless they present proof of a negative test done within 72 hours of their departure.

Those who test positive in France as of today must quarantine for 14 days.

France is not permitting general travel to and from the 16 countries, which include the United States and Brazil. The testing requirement therefore only applies to people entering under limited circumstances – “French citizens who live in these countries or citizens of these countries with an established residence in France,” Castex has said.

Daniel Court was tested at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport after coming in from the French Riviera city of Nice. He acknowledged not loving the experience.

“It’s very fast, but I have to say that it’s not very pleasant. It is surprising. But we have to do it,” Court said.

Another passenger who got tested after landing at Paris’ main airport, Nadia Vusik of Belarus, said she thought the new policy made sense.

“It is definitely necessary, and I am happy that in France it is possible to do right here. It’s very convenient.”

Health authorities have said that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has jumped on the French mainland in recent weeks. The government previously made mask-wearing mandatory in all indoor public spaces.

The French government has so far ruled out imposing another nationwide lockdown after the one that brought the country to a standstill for nearly two months between March and May.
