These six Boston neighborhoods show a city on the brink of history - The Boston Globe

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

By Emma Platoff, Globe Staff

At Boston’s southeastern edge, along the gray Neponset River, sits one of the city’s whitest and most conservative pockets.

Dorchester’s Ward 16, Precinct 12 is home to Florian Hall, where an enormous red-tiled mural announces the home base of the firefighters union, and where on Tuesday, hundreds will show up to vote. Local 718, the firefighters union, has backed Essaibi George, the race’s underdog and its more moderate candidate. In all likelihood, these voters overwhelmingly will, too.

On the hilly streets, lined with modest single- or two-family homes bordered by chain-link fences, hot pink lawn signs backing Essaibi George are almost as common as the Halloween spiderwebs, skeletons, and blow-up figures. American flags are ubiquitous; less common, but visible, are their cousins with thin blue or thin red lines, cheering the work of police officers and firefighters.

The lawn signs tell the story: White, Irish candidates are well-represented; one sign for Wu sits lonely at the front of a yard. Donald Trump almost defeated Joe Biden here last year, in his best showing anywhere in the city.

In a changing city, here is a place that clings to its traditions, where families tend to own their homes and stay in them, and where the demographics change little over time. It remains the Irish-American enclave many imagine Boston to be, even as much of the city has shed that identity. Many residents are government workers and first responders, police officers or firefighters or city staff who keep up with Boston politics in part because of its impact on their lives.

Hundreds will show up to vote on Tuesday at Florian Hall. Local 718, the firefighters union housed at the venue, has backed Annissa Essaibi George. PAT GREENHOUSE/GLOBE STAFF

“In Dorchester in general, politics is sport, and mayoral elections are our Super Bowl,” said state Representative Dan Hunt, who chairs the Ward 16 Democratic Committee that includes the area. “So people are involved. People are informed.”

It’s “a neighborhood-oriented neighborhood” — the kind of place where folks genuinely care about each other, where they shop locally and are quick to recommend each other’s businesses, said Nancy Flynn, who owns Dorchester Door and Window, which has been a neighbor to Florian Hall for more than three decades.

They come together on Election Days, too. It’s consistently one of the highest-turnout precincts in the city. In September, it saw the highest participation of any precinct in Boston, at 62 percent — more than double the city average. And residents often vote cohesively. Essaibi George won four of every five votes cast in this precinct during the preliminary, her strongest showing anywhere in the city — and the best showing of any candidate in any precinct in the city.

“Our membership tends to be very civically engaged,” said Steve Bickerton, president of the Cedar Grove Civic Association, which includes a number of Dorchester precincts.

One key to that voting pattern: The Keystone Apartments, a hulking brick building home to hundreds of seniors and disabled residents. From its sprawling parking lot, it’s an easy five-minute walk up Hallet Street (or a shorter ride, often offered by campaign staff) to Florian Hall — and on the first Tuesday in November, it feels, Hunt said, more like a social gathering than an errand or obligation.

Baseball-Astros beat Braves to force World Series Game Six - KFGO News

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

(Reuters) – The Astros overcame an early four-run deficit to beat the Atlanta Braves 9-5 and force a World Series Game Six in Houston on Tuesday.

The Braves loaded the bases in the first inning on Sunday and Adam Duvall hit a grand slam off Framber Valdez for a 4-0 lead that electrified the Atlanta crowd.

The Astros got on the board in the top of the second on an RBI double by Alex Bregman and cut the lead in half on a sacrifice fly by Martin Maldonado.

The Astros scored twice in the third on an RBI double by Carlos Correa and a groundout by Yuli Gurriel that plated Michael Brantley to level the contest at 4-4.

Freddie Freeman put the Braves in front in the bottom half of the third with a 460-foot solo shot over the center field fence.

But the Astros hitters displayed more patience at the plate than they did in the previous two games and tied the scores when Braves reliever AJ Minter walked Maldonado with the bases loaded.

On the next pitch, pinch hitter Marwin Gonzalez floated a single into left field that scored two runs to give the Astros their first lead of the game at 7-5.

The Astros tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth innings to hand the Braves their first home loss of the postseason.

Game Six is on Tuesday in Houston with the Braves holding a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-seven Fall Classic.

Tom Brady Loses Game For Bucs With Pick-Six To Saints’ P.J. Williams - CBS Boston

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) — In his brief Buccaneers career, Tom Brady has been a menace to most opponents he’s faced. The Saints remain the exception — in the regular season, at least.

Brady lost both of his regular-season matchups with the Saints last year, with the second loss being one of the worst games of Brady’s entire career.

Brady did get plenty of revenge by beating the Saints in the playoffs in last year’s divisional round, but he and his teammates were looking to pick up a big win on Sunday in the Superdome.

And when Sean Payton made the questionable decision to throw passes in the red zone inside the two-minute warning, thus giving Brady plenty of time (and a timeout) to mount the game-winning drive, it appeared as though that victory was coming.

But instead of doing what he seemingly always does, Brady blew it.

On the first play of the would-be game-winning drive, Brady threw a dangerous pass to Mike Evans. He was lucky that his pass didn’t get intercepted. One snap later, he wasn’t so lucky.

On a second-and-10 from the Tampa Bay 25-yard line, trailing 29-17, Brady delivered a pass in the direction of Chris Godwin. But Saints safety P.J. Williams had it read all the way, and he stepped in front of the pass to make what proved to be the game-sealing interception.

Williams made it sting a bit extra by returning it 40 yards for the touchdown.

Brady tried to lead another scoring drive after that, but he ended up getting sacked by Tanoh Kpassagnon, adding some insult to injury.

Brady had a bit of an up-and-down day for Tampa Bay, completing 27 of his 38 passes for 364 yards with four touchdowns but two interceptions. His first pick came just inside the two-minute warning before halftime, and it allowed the Saints to stretch a 10-7 lead into a 17-7 lead. Brady also lost a fumble on a sack prior to that, which allowed the Saints to take a 10-7 lead with a field goal.

The Saints lost their starting quarterback to injury, as Jameis Winston suffered a knee injury late in the second quarter and did not return. Trevor Siemian stepped in and completed 16 of his 29 passes for 159 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions.

Brady’s regular-season performances by the Saints are fascinating, in that they stand out quite a bit from his performances vs. the rest of the league.

Since joining the Bucs, Brady is now 0-3 vs. the Saints (in the regular season), with a 64.3 percent completion rate, six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Against everyone else, he’s thrown 59 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The Bucs are 0-3 vs. the Saints since the start of last year and 17-4 against everyone else.

That is to say, in just three games, the Saints account for more than 41 percent of Brady’s interceptions and almost 43 percent of the Buccaneers’ losses over the past season and a half.

Brady did get the win in the most important of his four meetings with the Saints as a Buccaneer, completing 18 of his 33 passes for 199 yards with two touchdowns and no picks in the playoffs last year, but that likely isn’t making him feel much better after the ending on Sunday in New Orleans.

Tom Brady Throws Pick-Six to P.J. Williams As Saints Secure Upset Over Buccaneers - Sports Illustrated

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers nearly pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Saints on Sunday, but one bad throw cost Brady and Co. on Tampa's final drive.

Brady threw a pick-six to cornerback P.J. Williams with under two minutes remaining, giving the Saints a 36-27 lead in front of a raucous New Orleans crowd. Brady is, of course, the greatest QB of all-time, but even he isn't immune to an ill-timed turnover.

Brady still turned in an impressive stat line on Sunday despite his ugly pick-six. He tallied 375 yards passing and four touchdowns against the Saints, marking his second 300-yard game in the last four weeks. As Brady rolls through a second season in Tampa, his NFL records continue to look more and more out of reach.

SI Recommends

The Buccaneers fell to 6–2 in 2021 with Sunday's loss. They will have a bye in Week 9 before facing the Washington Football Team on Nov. 14.
