What's Going On: O'burg battle re-enactment, Middle Ages demo in Massena, W. P'dam gun show - North Country Now

LOCAL EVENTS ON SATURDAY

Winter battle

OGDENSBURG: Annual Battle of Ogdenburgh re-enactment will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23 on the streets of the city with flintlocks and cannon fire; commemorates the War of 1812 battle, on Feb. 22, 1813, during which British troops at Fort Wellington marched across the ice from Prescott to attack U.S. forces and drove them out of the city; scores of war re-enactors turn out for the Battle, which is organized by the living history group Forsyth`s Rifles; displays and exhibits at the Dobisky Center on Riverside Avenue from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; battle re-enactment begins at 1:30 p.m. in downtown at the corner of Riverside (Water Street) and Franklin streets; battle will end at State and Ford streets, the site of the original battlefield.

Kid’s crafts

OGDENSBURG: Vacation week crafts for kids, free crafts and materials provided; 2-3 p.m.; Ogdensburg Public Library.

Middle Ages demo

MASSENA: Free Demo Day of pre-17th century skills, arts, combat, culture, and history; hang out with modern day folks from Middle Ages; play medieval board games, 2-4 p.m; special story time for kids ages 3 and up at 2:30 p.m.; no registration needed; Massena Public Library; sponsored by the Society for Creative Anachronism and the Shire of the Northern Outpost.

Art reception

MASSENA: Massena Artists Association’s Annual Spring Open Show reception, 1-3 p.m., Massena Public Library; show runs through Friday, Feb. 29 during regular library hours; two best of show awards, one each selected from the student and adult submissions, determined by peoples choice balloting during the show, will be announced.

Gun show

WEST POTSDAM: The West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department holds it's spring gun show fundraiser 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the West Potsdam Bingo Hall, 45 Blanchard Rd; featuring gun raffle, food & beverage, admission $5, 12 and under free

Snow baby pageant

BRASHER FALLS: Part of Tri-Town Winter Carnival, The Riverview Restaurant, 928 NY 11C; 9-10:30 a.m.; participation prize to each child in age groups: baby boys, girls 0-1 yr; toddlers boys, girls age 2-3; junior boys, girls 4-5 yrs; photos and registration for random cash prize drawings, no judging; free to enter; participants may dress for theme, or just something cute.

Longest icicle contest

BRASHER FALLS: Part of Tri-Town Winter Carnival, The Riverview Restaurant, 928 NY 11C; 9-10:30 a.m.; bring frozen icicle to the Brasher Room to get measured; cash prize for 1st place.

Night parade

WINTHROP: Part of Tri-Town Winter Carnival; starting at Elliot’s Agway to the school; line up at 6:15 p.m.; parade starts at 7.

Food distribution

MASSENA: Food distribution at St. Vincent de Paul, 128 Main Street 9 -10:30 a.m.; will close earlier if items are depleted; this distribution is for St. Lawrence County residents only.

Winter carnival craft fair

BRASHER FALLS: The 47th annual Winter Carnival craft fair to benefit the Brasher Falls United Methodist Church Pack Progam is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Lawrence Central High School. Handmade craft items as well as direct sales vendors and silent auction.

Knitting class

WADDINGTON: Beginning knitting class series, 2-4 p.m., The Gallery, 10 Main St.; $20 plus $10 materials fee; Carol Backus, instructor; using circular needles, Carol will teach a new stitch, the seed stitch, and will show you how to make it into a cowl; materials included; no experience necessary; pre-registration requested; www.lakestlawrencearts.com or call 315-308-4410 to preregister.

Defensive driving course

OGDENSBURG: United Helpers will host a New York DMV approved National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Staff Development Training Room at the Behavioral Health/Life Skills (formerly Mosaic) Complex, 100 Ford St.; refresher course for drivers of all ages and includes safe driving tips and an overview of today’s vehicle and traffic laws; cost is $30, payable in cash, check or money order made out to United Helpers Care, Inc.
