Demolition activity at the Vallco mall site is entering a new phase next week, with the bridge spanning Wolfe Road set to come down.
The demolition will cause detours on Wolfe Road for approximately ten days, but no freeway off ramp closures from I-280 are expected.
According to an e-newsletter sent out Friday by Sand Hill Property Company, the owner and redeveloper of the site, bridge demolition will start at 7 a.m. on Monday, March 30 running until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7. Daily demolition activities are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
During the closure, vehicles traveling south on Wolfe Road from Sunnyvale or I-280 will be detoured onto Perimeter Road just north of the bridge, connecting to Stevens Creek Blvd. around either side of the mall. Cars traveling north on Wolfe Road from Stevens Creek Blvd. toward I-280 will be directed onto Vallco Parkway before utilizing a detour on the east side of the mall.
While the entire state of California is in a shelter-at-home order, according to Governor Newsom’s order, “Construction Workers who support the construction, operation, inspection, and maintenance of construction sites and construction projects (including housing production construction)” qualify as essential workers. Once complete, Vallco Town Center will feature more than 2,400 units of housing, including 50% affordable units.
Minimizing impacts to residents, businesses
Reed Moulds, Managing Director at Sand Hill, noted that doing the demolition while fewer cars are on the road will hopefully minimize impacts.
“Doing the demolition of the bridge now, while traffic volumes on N. Wolfe Road are greatly reduced, will significantly lessen impacts to Cupertino residents, neighboring businesses, and demolition workers,” Moulds said in the e-newsletter.
“Furthermore, the businesses at the Mall that would be most impacted by this demolition during normal business operations are currently closed and will remain so for the duration of this work,” he continued.
Benihana and six restaurants at Main Street Cupertino remain open during the demolition. To see a full list of restaurants in Cupertino offering takeout or delivery services during the stay-at-home order, click here.
