Madison County reported the 10th confirmed case of COVID-19 in the county on Saturday, with 45 tests still pending results. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice reported six confirmed cases of the virus in the Ferguson Unit, which are counted separately from county totals.
According to Madison County Emergency Management coordinator Shelly Butts, testing has been completed in nursing homes around the county, with no confirmed cases reported. Testing will move into assisted living centers soon, she said.
With only 10 reported cases, and only two of those active cases, Madison County businesses and restaurants will be able to joint Phase III of the Reopen Texas plan, allowing 74% occupancy as of Friday.
According to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, the number of new cases of COVID-19 have grown to more than 1,500 each day, using a seven-day rolling average. New cases of the virus have risen around 71% in the last two weeks.
There were only 638 cases reported Monday, but on Saturday, DSHS reported 1,940 new cases.
The Texas Tribune reported that, while confirmed infections have increased across the state, hot spots like state prisons and meatpacking plants, which have recently been the sites of mass or targeted testing, are responsible for a portion of the increase, according to the DSHS.
TDCJ said Monday there were a total of 6,922 cases confirmed in the state’s prisons, with 2,330 of those cases recovered.
As of Monday evening, the DSHS reports a total of 75,616 confirmed cases around Texas, with 50,439 of those recovered. There have been 1,836 deaths in the state tied to the virus.
Cities around the state are adjusting testing for COVID-19 in response to large protests after the death of former Houstonian George Floyd. According to the Dallas Morning News, Protesters who took to the streets of Dallas and the North Texas suburbs for the last 10 days to rally against police brutality and racism qualify for a federally subsidized coronavirus test.
And a pop-up testing site near the American Airlines Center is expected to open Wednesday for protesters to walk up to get tested, a spokeswoman for Parkland Health & Hospital System said Monday.
As reported by the Houston Chronicle, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner disputed that protests in the city have led to the current uptick in novel coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.
"Covid-19 positive cases have been increasing for the last two weeks as well as hospitalizations," Turner said in a Monday Twitter post. "This current rise cannot and should not be attributable to the mass protest and demonstrators."
