Iowa reported six new deaths in a 24-hour period ending Tuesday at 11 a.m. due to COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus.
During the same time frame, the state reported 503 positive cases out of 3,952 test results, meaning 12.73 percent were positive. That’s a jump from the previous two days, in which the percentage of positive cases was in the single digits.
The six deaths brings the state’s total to 799.
Deaths were reported in Black Hawk, Cerro Gordo, Marshall, Scott and Story counties. Franklin County reported its first death.
Linn County saw another day of double-digit increases in COVID-19 cases. With 31 new cases reported from 11 a.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Linn County’s seven-day rolling average is up to 28 new daily cases, nearing the rolling average all-time high of 31 new daily cases on April 24.
The seven-day rolling average is the average number of new daily cases over a period of seven days, updated daily by The Gazette.
In Johnson County, the seven-day rolling average was down for the fourth consecutive day Tuesday, to 21 new cases. In the 24-hour period ending Tuesday at 11 a.m., the county didn’t report a double-digit increase in new cases.
However, with the University of Iowa and Iowa City schools expected to return to at least partial in-person instruction, Johnson County officials are predicting those numbers will spike in the fall.
In calling for a more unified, stronger coronavirus mitigation response, Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague issued a face mask mandate for residents of Iowa City that began Tuesday afternoon. The mandate is a pushback on the governor and attorney general’s position that a mandate supersedes local enforcement jurisdiction.
Hospitalizations ticked upward — from 221 on Monday to 223 on Tuesday, but the number of patients in intensive care was down from 76 to 74. Thirty-two patients were on ventilators — up from 30 the day before.
