No. 16 Nicolas Aguilar (125)
No. 18 Joseph Grello (174)
No. 20 Billy Janzer (197)
No. 26 Michael VanBrill (157)
Aguilar, Alvarez, Janzer, Rivera and VanBrill all qualified for nationals this past season before the NCAA Championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rivera downed Penn State's Roman-Bravo Young to claim his second consecutive Big Ten title back in March at the RAC, while Alvarez (sixth) and VanBrill (seventh) also found themselves on the conference podium.
A 2020 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-American, Alvarez qualified for nationals in his first collegiate season. The Garfield, New Jersey native closed out 2019-20 with a 26-10 record and wins over eight ranked foes. Ranked within the Top 10 of his weight class throughout the majority of the season, Alvarez went 11-5 in dual action and picked up an individual title at the 2020 Southern Scuffle.
Also named an All-American by the NWCA, Aguilar was set to make his NCAA Championships debut after he finished the 2019-20 season with a 20-9 record as a redshirt freshman. Aguilar picked up wins over two ranked foes this season, which included a 3-1 decision over then-No. 11 Michael DeAugustino (Northwestern) on Feb. 14 at the RAC. Aguilar went 4-2 at the Big Ten Championships, as he wrestled back for a ninth-place finish in his weight class after three consecutive wins over Brendan Meredith (Penn State), Justin Cardani (Illinois) and Eric Barnett (Wisconsin).
The program's 2019-20 dual scoring champion with 47 team points, Janzer finished his first varsity season with a 21-10 record and a 14-3 mark in dual action. The 2020 NCAA qualifier produced two wins over ranked foes, which included a 6-4 decision over 2020 Big Ten 184-pound runner up Cameron Caffey (Michigan State) in RU's road dual against the Spartans in January.
Grello's season was cut short due to injury, as the redshirt junior finished with a 6-5 record with four wins in dual action. A three-year letterwinner and 2019 NCAA qualifier, Grello owns 38 career victories "On the Banks", which includes 18 wins a season ago. Grello is also a two-time Big Ten Championships participant.
VanBrill earned his first trip to the national tournament after he finished seventh at the 2020 Big Ten Championships. VanBrill picked up three wins en route to his seventh-place finish, which included a two-time NCAA qualifier Eric Barone (Illinois) in the opening round of the championships along with wins against Jahi Jones (Maryland) and Garrett Model (Wisconsin). VanBrill finished 2019-20 with 18 wins and did not miss a dual match this past season.
Rutgers wrapped up another successful dual season, as its 10-7 record in 2019-20 marked the 14th consecutive winning campaign for the Scarlet Knights and the 13th since head coach Scott Goodale took over the program in 2007. RU also finished ranked in the NWCA Coaches Poll for the ninth time under Goodale's leadership. Home attendance for wrestling at the RAC remained one of the highest in the country, as Rutgers was fourth nationally in attendance average with 4,292 fans per home event.
