Workers from at least six Tampa Bay Publix locations have tested positive for the coronavirus within the past two weeks.
The Lakeland grocery chain confirmed which locations, each within Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, had positive cases after employees reported them to the Tampa Bay Times. Publix and other retailers are not required by the state to report positive cases of COVID-19 to the public.
“The testing and reporting of cases by health departments varies widely state-by-state,” Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous said in a statement. “As a result, we cannot fully and accurately report cases in real time, but we have been, and will continue to be, keenly focused on intensive, ongoing protective measures in all our stores.”
At least 82 grocery workers have died from coronavirus nationally and 11,507 grocery workers have tested positive for it, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union reported last month. But that count doesn’t include grocery workers from stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Publix, where workers are not unionized.
The following local Publix stores have had positive cases of COVID-19 among staff:
2724 W Hillsborough Ave., Tampa
19034 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa
13178 N. Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa
4900 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa
902 Curlew Road, Dunedin
7880 113th St., Seminole
The Times has reported that at least 11 Publix stores had cases of COVID-19 in the month of June.
