The Open Mat released its early preseason rankings this week. Six wrestlers from the University of Northern Colorado made the list in their respective weight classes.
Sophomore Mosha Schwartz came in at No. 11 for the 133 pound class. Sophomore and Greeley native Andrew Alirez was listed at No. 13 in the 149 pound group. Redshirt seniors Dalton Robertson (285) and Alan Clothier (184) rounded out UNC’s wrestlers in the top 20, landing at No. 17 and No. 20, respectively.
Senior transfer from Nebraska Johnny Blankenship (165) and redshirt senior Jacob Seely (197) also made the rankings at No. 31 and No. 24 in their divisions.
Aside from Blankenship, who will join the team for the 2020-21 season, the remaining ranked UNC wrestlers earned a spot at the 2020 NCAA Championships before its cancelation due to COVID-19.
Alirez, Schwartz and Robertson also received the All-America Honorable Mention distinction for their performances.
UNC head coach Troy Nickerson previously said all five wrestlers deserved the recognition, but he was still happy three were named All-Americans.
“The best part is that they all get to come back for another shot next season,” Nickerson said in a release. “This is the type of leadership we have been looking for in our program and I couldn’t be happier with where our team is at right now.”
Open Mat stated the rankings are a “very rough look” at the upcoming season since most teams are not meeting in person due to the coronavirus and little is known about their lineups. True freshmen were not included in the rankings either. These rankings will likely change as redshirts are announced.
