Update: Six arrested, one sought in Callaway shooting - WJHG

CALLAWAY, Fla. (PRESS RELEASE) - On July 13, 2020, at approximately 4:47 A.M., the Bay County Sheriff’s Office responded to Collinfurst Square in Callaway in regards to a shooting.

Upon arrival, contact was made with the victim, who had been shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim told deputies he had confronted a man he found burglarizing his vehicle, at which time a physical altercation ensued. During the physical altercation, another suspect approached and the victim heard a gunshot, realizing he had been shot. The suspects then fled the area.

Deputies and Criminal Investigators canvassed the area and found video footage of several men committing vehicle burglaries. They were traveling in two separate vehicles.

The sheriff’s office later received a report of a stolen vehicle that matched the description of one of the suspect’s vehicles seen in the video. That vehicle was later recovered in Springfield, Florida. It was learned that this vehicle had been left unlocked with the keys inside, and was taken by the men when they were checking for unlocked vehicles to burglarize.

Information was shared with Panama City Police Department about the burglaries and shooting.

While PCPD Detectives were investigating an unrelated case, they received information about juveniles possibly linked to the shooting. With the addition of this information to the ongoing investigation, BCSO investigators were able to identify seven individuals responsible for the burglaries and the shooting.

The Criminal Investigations Division devoted all resources to locate these individuals.

BCSO Investigators also responded to Jackson County in an attempt to locate one of the suspects and was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

It was determined during interviews that suspect Canom Williams was the individual responsible for shooting the victim.

Arrests have been made on the following six local juveniles:

Canom Williams, Jr., age 14

Burglary of a Conveyance (2 Counts)

An additional arrest and charges are expected.

Sheriff Tommy Ford wishes to commend local law enforcement agencies for working together to collectively solve crimes and serve the citizens of Bay County.

Bay County Sheriff’s Office wishes to remind the citizens of Bay County to please keep all vehicles locked and remove valuables when not in use.

ORIGINAL STORY: July 13, 2020

One person is injured after a shooting in Callaway Monday morning.

According to officials with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Collinfurst Square in Callaway just before 5 a.m. in response to a shooting.

Deputies say, the victim said he saw someone inside his car, so he went outside and confronted the man.

Officials say during the confrontation, another man appeared, holding a firearm. This second suspect fired once, hitting the victim. The two suspects fled the scene in a white four-door car.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

BCSO Criminal Investigations believes the victim did not know the suspects, but was shot because he confronted them.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office says all citizens should lock vehicles when not in use, after removing all valuables.
