Larry Seljevold, who has represented Ward 3 in the southwestern part of the city, threw his hat in the ring again while Steve Lindaas, who has represented Ward 4 in the southeastern part of the city, has also decided to run again.

Heidi Durand, who represents Ward 2 in the south-central part of the city, had not filed yet as of Friday, July 31.

Seljevold, 64, a retired physical education teacher, said he has enjoyed serving, although the coronavirus pandemic has complicated issues in the city. He also served on the council for one term from 1997 to 2001.

Lindaas, 55, the department head of physics and astronomy at Minnesota State University Moorhead, said his first year in office has had a learning curve.

"We still have a lot to get done," said Lindaas, who explained his priorities have evolved in the past months. Now he says he is focusing on improving quality of life in the city, diversity and racial issues and finding ways to operate the city during the pandemic.

While Seljevold and Lindaas are running unopposed so far, a race is developing in the northern part of Moorhead in Ward 1, where current council member Sara Watson-Curry has decided against seeking another term.

As of Friday, four candidates have filed for the seat, including Alexa Dixon-Griggs, Ryan Jensen, Matt Gilbertson and Quindlynn Overland.

Jensen, 39, is a central processing manager at Electrical Components Inc. and a former Fargo police officer and detective. He said one of his goals, if elected, would be to rejuvenate the relationships between city police and the community. He is also a supporter of renewable energy and would like to see the city deliver services in an economical and environmentally friendly way.

Gilbertson, 49, announced his candidacy last spring. The chiropractor and business owner said his goal is simply to make Moorhead a better place to live and work. The lifelong city resident said he would like to see the city continue to grow commercially.

Dixon-Griggs and Overland couldn't be reached on Friday.

Filings remain open through Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 5 p.m. in the city clerk's office at City Hall or online. The filing fee is only $5.

The election to fill the four seats on the nine-member council in all four of the city's wards will run along with the general election on Nov. 3.
