Coronavirus continued spreading rapidly in two eastern and central Oregon communities already hard hit by the pandemic, according to an analysis of new state data by The Oregonian/OregonLive.
The ZIP code for Ontario, in Malheur County, recorded the most new confirmed or presumed infections statewide for the week ending Aug. 23. And Warm Springs’ ZIP code in Jefferson County saw the most new cases per capita, just edging out Ontario.
In all, the Oregon Health Authority reported 1,704 new coronavirus cases last week. That’s the third consecutive week of declines since late July.
The Oregonian/OregonLive for months has been monitoring weekly changes in state coronavirus data, reporting by ZIP code the areas with the greatest weekly changes.
Our analysis has shifted to highlight the areas with the most new cases in relation to the area’s population.
Here’s a look at those ZIP codes, plus the traditional format including areas with the most new overall cases (at the end of the story). (Click here for an interactive map).
97761 Warm Springs
This central Oregon ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 56 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, nearly double from a week earlier.
In total, the Jefferson County ZIP code added 24 new cases, increasing its total to 257.
Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center through Aug. 21 reported 248 positive cases. Many households in the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs have lacked clean water in their homes for weeks and the Tribal Council has told people who are infected to isolate at home.
The Oregon Health Authority did not report any workplace outbreaks in this ZIP code.
97914 Ontario
This ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections of 53 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, up slightly from the previous week.
The Malheur County ZIP code added 102 new cases in all, raising its total to 787.
The eastern Oregon area has three active workplace outbreaks, according to the Oregon Health Authority. Snake River Correctional Institution added 10 confirmed or presumed infections, the Kraft Heinz Company added one and Walmart added none.
The Oregon Health Authority also disclosed for the first time an outbreak at Wellsprings Assisted Living totaling four cases.
97913 Nyssa
This ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 34 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, up from the previous week.
In all, the Malheur County ZIP code added 17 new cases, raising its total to 160.
There are no active workplace outbreaks reported in this eastern Oregon community along the Idaho border.
97071 Woodburn
This ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 33 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, an increase from the previous week.
In all, the Marion County ZIP code added 97 new cases, increasing its cumulative count to 680.
The Oregon Health Authority reported an active workplace outbreak at Santos Labor Force with one new case. The state also reported two new cases linked to French Prairie Nursing and Rehab and one new case linked to Silver Creek Senior Living.
97818 Boardman
The ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 26 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, down sharply from a week earlier. But it still leads the state in cumulative per capita infections.
In all, the Morrow County ZIP code added 11 new confirmed or presumed infections, increasing the cumulative total to 288.
Boardman is 30 minutes west of Umatilla and Hermiston. They collectively comprise the state’s biggest hotspot, led by Hermiston.
The Oregon Health Authority reported new cases at five businesses with active outbreaks: Lamb Weston East with five new confirmed or presumed infections; Independent Transport with three; Lamb Weston Boardman Pac Center with two; Port of Morrow Warehousing with two; and Lamb Weston West with one new case.
97882 Umatilla
The ZIP code recorded new confirmed or presumed infections totaling 21 per 10,000 people during the week ending Aug. 23, up slightly from a week earlier.
In all, the Umatilla County ZIP code added 17 new confirmed or presumed infections, increasing the cumulative total to 348.
The Oregon Health Authority reported one new case at the Two Rivers Correctional Institution.

97914 Ontario
The Malheur County community added 102 cases, raising its tally to 787. That’s the second most in Oregon and fifth most per capita.
97071 Woodburn
The Marion County community added 97 cases, increasing its total to 777. That’s the third most in Oregon and 10th most per capita.
97305 Salem
The Marion County community added 72 cases, raising its tally to 577. That’s the seventh most in Oregon and 21st most per capita.
97501 Medford
The Jackson County community added 69 cases, increasing its total to 260. That’s the 23rd most in Oregon and 66th most per capita.
97301 Salem
The Marion County community added 54 cases, raising its tally to 587. That’s the sixth most in Oregon and 24th most per capita.
97128 McMinnville
The Yamhill County community added 49 cases, increasing its total to 308. That’s the 17th most in Oregon and 47th most per capita.
97233 east Portland/Gresham
The Multnomah County community added 38 cases, raising its tally to 649. That’s the fourth most in Oregon and 18th most per capita.
97123 Hillsboro
The Washington County community added 37 cases, increasing its total to 471. That’s the ninth most in Oregon and 34th most per capita.
97838 Hermiston
The Umatilla County community added 35 cases, raising its tally to 1,410. It has the most cases in Oregon and third most per capita.
97236 east Portland
The Multnomah County community added 33 cases, increasing its total to 645. That’s the fifth most in Oregon and 19th most per capita.
