Minnesota added another six COVID-19 fatalities and 1,191 new coronavirus infections to its outbreak tally Friday, according to the state Department of Health.
The state death toll is now at 1,994 with another 52 patients suspected to have died from COVID-19, but they did not have a positive coronavirus test. There have been 94,189 laboratory-confirmed infections diagnosed since the outbreak began.
Friday’s new cases totals came on a testing volume of 28,718 tests, one of the highest daily totals since local testing began in March. Minnesota has screened 1.9 million samples from 1.35 million residents over the past six months.
Nearly 100 patients were added to the state’s hospital rolls this week with about half of them requiring intensive care. Cumulatively, 7,391 people have needed hospital care with 2,067 needing critical care.
There are 84,256 patients who have recovered enough they no longer need to be isolated.
Minnesotans in their 20s continue to be the age group with the most coronavirus cases. But there’s growing evidence those infections are spreading to other more vulnerable populations.
Long-term care facilities with outbreaks grew this week from 256 to 283 facilities. State health officials consider it an outbreak when one patient or staffer tests positive for the coronavirus.
About 72 percent of Minnesota’s fatalities have been residents of long-term care.
