Roseburg Police jailed a man on 6 sexual assault charges involving a minor, on Friday.
The man had been a bus driver for Roseburg Public Schools.
Sergeant Jeff Eichenbusch said approximately two weeks ago, detectives with RPD began working on a sexual assault investigation from incidents that allegedly occurred in Roseburg several years ago. Eichenbusch said the case began when they were contacted by law enforcement in another state, where the reported victim disclosed the previous abuse.
The alleged victim was a minor child who was known to the suspect, according to the report. Eichenbusch said the victim has not lived in the area for several years.
During the subsequent investigation, detectives charged 62-year old Lawrence Jackson with sodomy in the first degree and five counts of sexual abuse in the first degree. Jackson was detained on$1.652 million dollars bail.
Superintendent Jared Cordon of Roseburg Public Schools told News Radio 1240 KQEN that Jackson was a bus driver for First Student, which contracts with RPS to provide school bus services. Cordon said, “Roseburg Public Schools is deeply disturbed by the allegations against one of First Student’s bus drivers”. Cordon said RPS and First Student will fully cooperate with RPD to assist in the investigation in any way possible. He said as the driver’s employer, First Student will be handling any internal investigations. Cordon said, “The district cannot comment on Mr. Jackson’s employment status, but he will no longer be driving Roseburg students”. Cordon thanked RPD for the ongoing support of the district.
RPS Chief Operations Officer Cheryl Northam told KQEN that although students have not been transported since March, at that time Jackson’s routes included Fir Grove Elementary, Fremont Middle School and Roseburg High School. Northam said Jackson has been on meal delivery routes since March, along with a meal delivery rider.
