The Cattaraugus County Health Department confirmed six more COVID-19 cases in a news release issued Saturday. The total case count since March is 535.
Cattaraugus County, along with Allegany, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties, is in New York State's Western Region, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Updates site shows the region to have the state's significantly highest percentage of positive test results reported over the last three days. The Wednesday and Thursday rates were 3.3; the Friday rate was 4.3.
In Saturday's release, the Cattaraugus County Health Department noted that 116 cases were active and that 400 cases were in recovery. The death total in the county from COVID-19 cases is 19, and that was reported Thursday.
Among the six cases, three individuals are women, and three are men. All six persons deny significant travel history.
One man and one woman are health care workers; both were tested at their workplaces, and both are asymptomatic. Only one of the two health care workers reports being in direct contact with a COVID-19 positive person.
The other four individuals report having contact with COVID-19 positive persons and experiencing various symptoms associated with the virus.
Four individuals live in the southeast quadrant of the county; one lives in the southwest, and one, in the northeast.

The health department undertakes thorough contact tracings for those individuals with whom persons who tested positive have been in contact and the places that they have visited. County health personnel urge any resident experiencing fever, cough, shortness of breath or whole body aches contact their health care provider and avoid going directly to an urgent care facility or an emergency room.
Friday, Nov. 6:
- The health department confirmed 11 more COVID-19 cases, bringing the total case count since March to 529.
- The department noted that 116 cases are active and that 394 cases are in recovery.
- Among the 11 cases, four are male, and seven are women. Two are a mother and daughter in the same residence.
- Four live in the southeast quadrant of the county; three live in the southwest quadrant of the county; two live in the northwest quadrant of the county, and two live in the northeast quadrant of the county.
- Three are health care workers.
- Eight received results after undergoing rapid tests.
- All 11 deny any significant travel history. Nine say they were in direct contact with individuals who tested positive for COVID-19; two said they were not.
Thursday, Nov. 5:
- The 19th death of a county resident from complications of COVID-19 was recorded. The person who died was a 100-year-old woman; she developed respiratory failure and was unable to overcome her illness despite aggressive medical treatment.
- The county confirmed the nine new cases and noted that out of a total of 518 cases, 112 are active, and 388 recovered.
- All nine denied having significant travel history. Four are asymptomatic, while five have reported various symptoms associated with the coronavirus.
- Five of the cases live in the southeast quadrant; three live in the southwest quadrant, and one lives in the northeast. Seven are women, and two are men. One woman is a health care worker and was tested at her place of employment. Another person was tested at facility.
- Only two were confirmed after rapid tests.
Wednesday, Nov. 4:
Olean School District:
The Olean City School District reported that a teacher from Washington West Elementary School was confirmed as a positive COVID-19 case. This teacher had not been to the school since Friday according to a notice on the district website. The teacher and class have been asked to isolate and will not return to class for Thursday and Friday. The district will hold school as scheduled because the Washington West building has been cleaned, and direct contacts have been asked to remain home and isolate, according to the notice.
Western New York:
According to an update from Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's office, the percent of COVID-19 tests that produced positive results in the Western New York region, which includes the Greater Olean area, reached 3.4% — the highest of any of the state's 10 regions — on Tuesday.
Tuesday, Nov. 3:
- The Cattaraugus County Health Department reported five additional cases of COVID-19, which brought to 500 the total number of cases recorded in the county since testing began in March.
- The county has an active caseload of 109; 373 residents have recovered from the virus, and 18 have died. Cattaraugus is among the five counties within the Western New York Region, where the rate of positive cases was determined to be at 3% on Nov. 2, according to updates from Gov. Cuomo's office.
- Among the five cases reported, two persons reside in the southeast quadrant of the county; two reside in the northeast quadrant, and one resides in the southwest quadrant. One is a health care worker who reports being in direct contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19. All five deny significant travel history. All five have experienced various symptoms associated with the virus.
Monday, Nov. 2:
- Cattaraugus County reported nine additional cases of the coronavirus.
- Of the nine new cases, five are male residents and four are female residents.
- The county confirmed four of the nine new cases by rapid test.
- Six of the nine infected reside in the southeast quadrant of the county; two resident in the southwest quadrant, and one lives in the northwest quadrant.
- Of the nine new cases, two work as health care workers.
- All nine residents deny any significant travel history.
- Four of the nine residents report direct contact with someone positive for COVID-19.
- Six of the nine residents reported symptoms; three have been asymptomatic.
- Two of the nine residents have been hospitalized because of their symptoms.
Sunday, Nov. 1:
- The Cattaraugus County Health Department confirmed four additional cases of COVID-19 Sunday afternoon. The total number of confirmed cases in the county since March is 486.
- The department’s active positive COVID-19 caseload is 106; 362 people have recovered from COVID-19, and 18 have died.
- Among the four, one is a woman, one is a girl and two are men. All deny being in direct contact with persons who have tested positive for COVID-19.
- Two of the cases live in the northeast quadrant of the county; one lives in the southeast quadrant, and one lives in the northwest quadrant. All have developed various symptoms associated with the disease. All received their positive test results on Saturday; three were tested on Thursday, and one was tested on Wednesday.
- The woman travels to Bradford, Pennsylvania, for her job at a health care facility and also recently attended a benefit in Bradford.
