These are heady times for Weezer superfans: frontman Rivers Cuomo has put 2,441 demos up for sale in nine download bundles costing $9 apiece.
The demos date from 1976 to 2015, and Cuomo is making sure fans know what they’re getting if they stump up. “For any demo: It might have silence. It might be wildly inappropriate. It might have super low sound quality. It might just be me rambling, talking, making sounds,” he explained on the website selling the demos. “It may have already been shared or leaked. It might be just a drum beat. it might not have vocals. It might be a duplicate of another demo.” And so on.
There are shades of Radiohead’s release of 18 hours of ‘OK Computer’ demos in 2019 after a hack. That’s not why Cuomo has done it though: TechCrunch has the interesting backstory, which is that the demo sale is his final project in a web programming course he’s taking.
