State authorities reported six fatal accidents during the long Christmas weekend.
Rita Brooks, 64, of Batesville was found dead Monday night of a suspected hit-and-run on the east shoulder of the northbound lanes of U.S. 167 near her home on 6220 N. St. Louis in Batesville, according to the Arkansas State Police.
An investigating trooper suspects Brooks was moving a trash receptacle from the edge of the highway when she was struck by a vehicle about 8:15 that night, the news release said.
Bobbi Meyer, 36, of Jonesboro struck a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado head-on in a 2012 Hyundai Sonata while heading north on Arkansas 1 toward Jonesboro in Poinsett County at 9:13 p.m. Monday, according to an Arkansas Department of Public Safety summary.
Meyer was pronounced dead by the Poinsett County coroner at 9:37 p.m. and taken to Gregg Weston Funeral Home, the summary said. The Silverado’s driver, Raymond Sharp, 49, was taken to NEA Baptist where he was treated for injuries.
Danya Davenport, 42, of Magazine lost control of her vehicle on Elkins Road in Magazine near Beggs Road while driving west in her 2016 Cooper, a report said.
The vehicle went over a steep ledge and overturned, throwing out Davenport at 8:39 p.m. Sunday, according to the report.
She was taken to Roller Funeral Home.
Claremont, N.H. resident Cassandra Carter, 29, was struck by a 2005 Dodge Durango traveling south on U.S. 67 near mile marker 3.5 in Sherwood at 10:01 p.m. Sunday after she entered the roadway running east, according to a report.
Her body was taken to the Pulaski County coroner.
Charles Cowles, 52, of Houston was killed at 3:57 p.m. Saturday when his 2012 Toyota Sequoia left U.S. 412 near Habberton Road in Washington County while traveling east, a report said.
The vehicle carrying passenger Jeniffer Cowles, 45, and three children struck a large rock after going down an embankment, according to the report.
Cowles was pronounced dead at Washington Regional Hospital where all of the injured were taken, the report said.
Cane Hill resident Michael Bryant, 49, crossed the centerline while driving south on U.S. 59 in his 2006 Chevrolet Silverado and struck a 2018 GMC Sierra driven by Ivan Cisneros-Ibarra, 44, of Lincoln, who was driving south at the Washington County-Benton County line Saturday at 11:45 a.m., according to a report.
Bryant was pronounced dead and taken to the Washington County coroner’s office while Cisneros-Ibarra was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., the report said.
