Six Tar Heels Named to All-ACC Teams - 247Sports

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Six North Carolina players were named to the 2020 All-ACC teams, the league announced on Tuesday morning. Of the six, five were on offense, honoring a group of Tar Heels that helped create one of the most prolific offenses in UNC football history. The Tar Heels went 8-3 in 2020 and capped the regular season with a dominating 62-26 win over Miami. UNC will play Texas A&M in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 2.

Carolina has the No. 4 ranked offense in the nation with 556.6 yards per game. UNC's passing offense is No. 19 in the nation with 307.5 passing yards per game and 14.97 yards per completion. The Tar Heel running offense is what truly stands out. North Carolina is ranked No. 9 in the country with 249.1 yards per game, 2,740 total rushing yards (No. 3), and 35 total rushing touchdowns, which is tied for first with Alabama.

Below are the UNC players that were named to All-ACC teams:

First-Team All-ACC: Michael Carter, Dyami Brown, Chazz Surratt

Second-Team All-ACC: Sam Howell, Javonte Williams,

Third-Team All-ACC: Joshua Ezeudu, Michael Carter (All-Purpose)

North Carolina players earning honorable mention were Brian Anderson, Tomon Fox, Marcus McKethan, Trey Morrison, Dazz Newsome, Jordan Tucker, and Ray Vohasek.

First-Team All-ACC

Running Back - Michael Carter

Carter's 7.98 yards per carry average this season will go down as the highest figure in UNC history, breaking Charlie Justice's mark of 7.2 set in 1946. His career average of 6.62 yards per carry is also the highest mark in program history

The spectacular senior accumulated an ACC-best 1,245 rushing yards, 267 receiving yards, and 11 total touchdowns on the season. He leaves Chapel Hill as the program's No. 4 all-time rusher (3,403 yards) behind Amos Lawrence, Mike Voight, and Leon Johnson.

Carter was also named Third-Team All-ACC as an All-Purpose offensive player. The Florida native has opted out of the Orange Bowl, marking the end of his UNC career.

Wide Receiver - Dyami Brown

Brown finished the regular season as the conference's only 1,000-yard receiver (1,099). His eight receiving scores were second in the ACC behind Boston College's Zay Flowers (nine).

Also opting out of the Orange Bowl to pursue the NFL, Brown leaves UNC sixth all-time in receiving yards (2,306), tied with Hakeem Nicks for second in receiving touchdowns (21), and second in yards per catch (18.7).

He is also the only UNC wideout to post multiple 1,000-yard seasons and be named a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist.

Linebacker - Chazz Surratt

In his two years at linebacker, Surratt has led the Tar Heels in tackles in both seasons. His 91 tackles in 2020 were the fifth-highest total in the ACC. Among the ACC's top-39 leading tacklers, Surratt is the only one to post more than five sacks. His six sacks on the season are tied with fellow Tar Heel Tomon Fox as the conference's tenth-best mark.

Another bowl opt-out, Surratt finishes his UNC career with 207 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. Surratt made the switch from quarterback to linebacker after the 2019 season.

Second Team All-ACC

Quarterback - Sam Howell

Howell has been spectacular once again this season, leading the ACC in passing yards (3,352), passing touchdowns (27), with six interceptions. The sophomore also rushed for five scores and caught one touchdown pass.

The only thing holding back Howell from a first-team selection was Clemson's Trevor Lawrence.

With a bowl game and another year to play, Howell is four passing touchdowns away from breaking Darian Durant's school record for most in a career (68). Howell needs 2,385 more yards through the air to break T.J. Yates's career passing yardage record (9,377).

Running Back - Javonte Williams

In a remarkable 2020 season, Williams broke Don McCauley's single-season scrimmage touchdown record (21) with 19 rushing and three receiving scores. In 11 games this season, the junior back has rushed for 1,140 yards (7.3 yards per carry) and caught 25 balls for 305 yards and three scores.

Williams has notched 22 total touchdowns in 2020.

Williams has recorded 4.59 yards after contact on the year — the sixth-highest figure among NCAA backs with at least 75 carries this season. He has also forced the most missed tackles of any player in the nation (83), 15 clear of Alabama's Najee Harris, who ranks second.

Third-Team All-ACC

Offensive Line - Joshua Ezeudu

UNC's lone non-skill offensive player to make an All-ACC team, Ezeudu showed tremendous strides on the offensive line in his sophomore season.

Primarily playing left guard, Ezeudu didn't surrender a sack and allowed three quarterback hits and seven pressures in 314 pass-blocking snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. Among UNC's guards who played more than 15 snaps, Ezeudu had the highest run-blocking grade (64.5).
