Six-time champion Roger Federer has withdrawn from the 2021 Australian Open as his return from two knee reconstruction continues.
Federer's long-time agent Tony Godsick confirmed the news to the Associated Press, saying the former world no. 1 was forecast to return to the court shortly after the first major of the season.
“Roger has decided not to play the 2021 Australian Open. He has made strong progress in the last couple of months with his knee and his fitness. However, after consultation with his team, he decided that the best decision for him in the long run is to return to competitive tennis after the Australian Open,” Godsick said in a statement.
“I will start discussions this coming week for tournaments that begin in late February and then start to build a schedule for the rest of the year."

Federer - who has reached the Australian Open final seven times, winning on six occasions - has barely been sighted in 2020 after undergoing two reconstructions on his right knee since this year's tournament, in which he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals and appeared clearly hindered by injury.
He appeared in a charity event in Cape Town alongside Rafael Nadal, before announcing a four-month layoff to recover from knee surgery, before going under the knife again on the same knee.
While Federer won't be appearing at Melbourne Park in 2021, fan-favourite Andy Murray has been given wildcard entry into the tournament just two years after conceding a chronic hip issue would force him into retirement.
