The Good, the Bad, the Ugly: Week Six - Mountain West Connection

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Thanksgiving has passed, and I planned on watching a ton of Mountain West football, including a critical game between two teams that were undefeated in conference play that was going to be nationally televised. Boise State v. San Jose State was cancelled on Saturday morning; Fresno State/San Diego State and Air Force/Colorado State were cancelled earlier this week. SDSU was able to pick up a game late. SJSU was the biggest victim having already traveled to Boise only to have the game cancelled. With that being said, let’s take a look at the good, bad, and ugly moments from week six.

The Good:

Wyoming

Wyoming didn’t show a bit of rust after having their past two games cancelled due to COVID-19. Wyoming was absolutely dominant on the ground, rushing for nearly 400 yards, and their defense held UNLV in check for much of the contest. The only concern for the Cowboys was star running back Xazavian Valladay leaving the game with an injury. Bohl made it sound like Valladay would be good to go next week.

Utah State

Solid play at the quarterback position and timely plays on the defensive side of the ball. The Aggies managed to find some rhythm on both sides of the ball, and good things happened as a result. It is a little early to say, but the Aggies may have found their quarterback of the future in Andrew Peasley. Peasley threw for over 200 yards and added over 100 on the ground. Aggies fans finally have something to be excited about!

Hawaii

What a great defensive game plan by Todd Graham and the Hawaii defense. They completely took the downfield threat away from the Wolf Pack and were content with giving up some yards on the ground and underneath throws. Hawaii came ready to play, only giving up 21 points to one of the most potent offenses in the Mountain West. Chevan Cordeiro played a nearly flawless game. Also, how about this Calvin Turner guy? He was arguably the best player on the field.

The Bad:

San Diego State

I thought about putting the Aztecs in the “Good” category. They deserve a ton of credit for going on the road and playing this game at the last minute. There are plenty of teams that wouldn’t do this (you know who you are). The Aztec defense did everything they could to keep their team in the game, but ultimately, you have to get some help from the offense. When the offense can barely manage 100 yards, you are going to have a hard time winning.

Nevada

I really felt like this game came down to coaching. Jay Norvell has done a great job for the Wolf Pack, but his staff really struggled to make adjustments on the offensive side of the ball and it really exposed Nevada. This team has relied on the deep ball all year long, and when Hawaii was able to take it away, they really struggled.

The Ugly:

UNLV

It is hard to find a lot to be hopeful for. This team had absolutely no answer for Wyoming’s running attack and struggled to moved the ball most of the game. If there is anything to look forward to, it might be that Brumfield looked decent at quarterback and has the measurements to be special.

New Mexico

This looked like it might be the week for the Lobos. They were playing another team that had not yet won a game in Utah State. But for the second consecutive week, the Lobos took a step back. A team that had pushed some of the better teams in the conference (San Jose State and Nevada) has really struggled the past two weeks.

That’s it for this edition of “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly.” What were some moments from this past week that stood out to you? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
