MINNEAPOLIS – Head coach Brad Frost and the Golden Gopher women's hockey team are pleased to announce the addition for six incoming student-athletes for the 2021-22 season. Emma Conner, Peyton Hemp, Ella Huber, Sadie Lindsay, Skylar Vetter, and Emily Zumwinkle make up the newest class of Gophers."We are thrilled to have these players joining our program next season," head coach Brad Frost said. "They all bring unique gifts and abilities to our team and they will have great careers here at the University of Minnesota. On top of being great hockey players, they are wonderful people and will fit in with who we are and what we are about. Our staff worked hard to recruit these players, and we are extremely excited that they chose to become Gophers."
Emma Conner, Forward, Edina High School (Edina, Minn.)
A left-handed forward, Emma Conner joins the Gophers from Edina High School. Named all-state honorable mention, all-metro, and all-conference as a junior, Conner helped Edina to a Minnesota Class AA state runner-up finish as a junior last season. Prior to joining the Hornets, Conner attended Selects Academy in Rochester, N.Y., from eighth grade through 10th grade where she won three-consecutive state championships and finished as national runner-up her freshman year. She also has attended USA Hockey national development camps. A high school teammate of Gopher freshman Tella Jungels, Conner intends to study psychology at the University of Minnesota. She is the daughter of John and Nicole Conner.
Frost on Conner: "Emma is a strong forward that plays the game at a very high level. She is a natural goal-scorer who plays a solid brand of hockey. Emma is strong on the puck, possesses and protects it well and only gives it up when it's the right thing to do. She has gotten great experience playing with a very good Edina High School team."
Conner on Why Minnesota: "I chose the University of Minnesota because I love the campus all together, including location, and it gives me an opportunity to play in an amazing college hockey program that I have watched since I have grown up."
Peyton Hemp, Forward, Andover High School (Andover, Minn.)
A right-handed forward from Andover, Minn., Peyton Hemp joins the Gophers from Andover High School. An all-state, all-metro, and all-conference honoree, Hemp has led Andover to three state tournament appearances, including winning a Minnesota Class AA state championship as a junior last season. As a member of the U.S. Under-18 Team, Hemp won gold at the 2020 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championships. Hemp intends to study biology at the University of Minnesota. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Jason Hemp.
Frost on Hemp: "Peyton is a hard-nosed forward that plays a very good 200-foot game. She has an excellent shot that allows her to put the puck in the net, and she also sees the ice well. Peyton loves to compete and wants to win her shift every time she is on the ice. Peyton has won a gold medal with Team USA's under 18 team and a Minnesota state championship with her Andover High School team."
Hemp on Why Minnesota: "I want to be close to home and receive the great education that the University of Minnesota has to offer. Another huge part of choosing the U of M was to be able to play with so many talented girls on an awesome hockey team."
Ella Huber, Forward, Chicago Mission (Northfield, Ill.)
Ella Huber joins the Gophers as a left-handed forward from Northfield, Ill., where she plays for the Chicago Mission and attends New Trier High School. With the Mission, Huber has won five state championships, four regional championships, and one national championship. As a member of the U.S. Under-18 Team, Huber won gold at the 2020 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championships and competed in the 2019 and 2018 Under-18 series against Canada. A high school teammate of Gopher freshmen Josey Dunne and Abbey Murphy, Huber is considering studying business at the University of Minnesota. She is the daughter of John and Margaret Huber.
Frost on Huber: "Ella is a quick forward who plays the game the right way. She is very responsible on both sides of the puck. Ella creates things with her speed and loves to play the game of hockey. She is very determined and passionate. Ella has won a gold medal with Team USA's under 18 team and a national championship with her Chicago Mission team."
Huber on Why Minnesota: "I chose the University of Minnesota because of the amazing athletics and academics that it has to offer. I fell in love with the campus and school sprit while I also loved the team dynamic that was built by the team and coaches."
Sadie Lindsay, Forward, Breck School (Minnetonka, Minn.)
Sadie Lindsay joins the Gophers as a right-handed forward from Minnetonka, Minn., and the Breck School. An all-state and all-conference honoree, Lindsay has led Breck to three-consecutive state championships, winning Minnesota Class A state titles as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. She has also attended USA Hockey national development camps and national festivals. A high school teammate of Gopher senior Grace Zumwinkle and fellow incoming freshman Emily Zumwinkle, Lindsay intends to study biology at the University of Minnesota. She is the daughter of J and Jane Lindsay.
Frost on Lindsay: "Sadie is a smooth skating forward. She is great on her edges and maneuvers well in tight spaces. Sadie has excellent vision, so she has the ability to set plays up for her teammates. She has a knack for putting the puck in the net as well. Her competitive spirit will continue to benefit her. Sadie has played in big games and won multiple Minnesota state championships with the Breck School."
Lindsay on Why Minnesota: "I chose the University of Minnesota because it provides its student-athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest level both
academically and athletically. I love the healthy, winning team culture that the program has, and I feel as though the academics will push me forward to success after college. The Gopher Women's Hockey team immediately felt like family to me, and I am beyond excited to join the program."
Skylar Vetter, Goaltender, Lakeville North High School (Lakeville, Minn.)
A goaltender who catches left, Skylar Vetter joins the Gophers from Lakeville, Minn., where she plays with the Lakeville North High School boys' hockey team. She was named the 2017-18 Youth Hockey Hub Goalie of the Year. As a member of the U.S. Under-18 Team, Vetter won gold in 2020 and took home silver in 2019 at the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championships along with attending USA Hockey national development camps and national festivals. Vetter intends to study marketing at the University of Minnesota. She is the daughter of Jane and Paul Vetter.
Frost on Vetter: "Skyler is a top-flight goaltender who has proven herself at every level. She has won a gold medal with Team USA's under 18 team and has played well in big moments. Skyler is good with her angles, and she is quick. She covers a lot of net and loves to compete."
Vetter on Why Minnesota: "I chose the University of Minnesota because it has the best coaches and facilities and the program has a long reputation of winning."
Emily Zumwinkle, Defense, Breck School (Excelsior, Minn.)
A right-handed defense, Emily Zumwinkle joins the Gophers from Excelsior, Minn., and the Breck School. An all-state and all-conference honoree, Zumwinkle has led Breck to three-consecutive state championships, winning Minnesota Class A state titles as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. She has also attended USA Hockey national development camps. The sister and high school teammate of Gopher senior Grace Zumwinkle and high school teammate of fellow incoming freshman Sadie Lindsay, Zumwinkle intends to study business and marketing at the University of Minnesota. She is the daughter of Mike and Lori Zumwinkle.
Frost on Zumwinkle: "Emily is a big, strong defenseman. She has good top-end speed and shoots the puck with a lot of pace. Emily is an all-around athlete that competes and plays the game of hockey the right way. She has won multiple Minnesota state championships with her team at the Breck School."
Zumwinkle on Why Minnesota: "I chose the University of Minnesota for the opportunity to achieve both athletically and academically at the highest level. When I first stepped on the University of Minnesota, I fell in love with the school and the campus. The coaches, team and staff are amazing and instantly made me feel a part of the program. It has always been a dream of mine to go to the University of Minnesota, and I am so blessed to become a part of the program."
