PlayStation 5 owners can get a taste of the next Resident Evil starting today. On Thursday, Capcom released a playable demo known as Maiden, a stand-alone sampler of Resident Evil Village’s creepy castle.
Maiden features its own playable character (the titular maiden), and players are tasked with escaping the castle’s dungeon and ultimately the castle itself. Maiden does not feature any combat, so while it doesn’t play precisely like Resident Evil Village will, Capcom hopes that “players get a real feel for the visuals and audio” of the upcoming game.
“The Maiden demo doesn’t take place during the main story of Resident Evil Village.,” producer Pete Fabiano said in a PlayStation Blog post. “Maiden was originally designed as a visual demo that would allow you to explore the inside of Dimitrescu Castle, but it evolved to include a short story and puzzle solving.”
The demo will feature ray tracing and 3D audio effects. Maiden is exclusive to PlayStation 5, but Capcom says that a separate demo for Resident Evil Village will be available on all platforms sometime this spring.
Capcom offered a similar sneak peek of Resident Evil 7 biohazard with the Kitchen demo. Kitchen was exclusive to PlayStation VR, and offered a terrifying seated virtual reality experience in the home of the Baker family. Capcom later released a “Beginning Hour” demo for Resident Evil 7.
Resident Evil Village will be released worldwide on May 7, 2021, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
