San Diego Gas & Electric’s Energy Showcase program recently recognized six entities in the San Diego region for their leadership in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. For the 15th consecutive year, the program honored local organizations that made exceptional efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and increase conservation of resources.
“These winners set a great example for others to follow. They’ve demonstrated that investing in clean and innovative technologies not only help the environment but also benefit the bottom line,” said Tashonda Taylor, vice president of customer operations for SDG&E, in a statement. “Ultimately, their efforts help our region move closer to meeting California’s ambitious climate goals and in turn, create a sustainable future.”
This year’s winners, profiled in individual videos at https://www.sdge.com/energy-showcase-2020, are:
Agricultural/Industrial:
Carlsbad-based Viasat, a satellite Internet and defense communication firm, has kept a sharp focus on energy-efficient design for its campuses. It earned three LEED Gold certifications and has incorporated a Certified Environmental Management System, LED lighting, cool-roof technology, high-efficiency boilers and HVAC system, as well as a fleet of electric golf carts at its new east campus.
Residential:
MC Properties provides affordable and energy-efficient housing for income-qualified, military and higher education students. On its way to Zero Net Energy, the San Diego company has incorporated sustainable elements such as rooftop solar water heating systems, high-efficiency boilers, kitchen and restroom faucet aerators, low-flow showerheads and LED lighting.
San Diego Habitat for Humanity builds homes to Energy Star standards countywide for eligible families in need of affordable housing. The nonprofit has adopted measures including solar energy, energy-efficient lighting and electric vehicle charging stations. Habitat for Humanity is building 11 energy-efficient homes in the Logan Heights area.
Commercial:
Bartell Hotels is always looking for energy-saving opportunities. The San Diego-based company’s properties include Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn, Best Western Island Palms, Hilton San Diego Airport, Holiday Inn Bayside, Pacific Terrace Hotel, Days Inn Mission Valley, Dana Inn Marina, and the Sheraton La Jolla. Bartell has made a host of energy efficiency improvements with the help of SDG&E, including upgrading its HVAC systems and adding energy management and controls at several hotels. The company has achieved a 40 percent drop in energy costs.
Public:
The city of La Mesa, as part of its Climate Action Plan, is educating and assisting residents and businesses with energy and water efficiency. The city promotes LEED standards for all buildings and developments, and it added LED lighting and an infrared thermometer to identify energy waste hotspots. By transitioning its fleet to renewable diesel, the city achieved a notable 65 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. La Mesa also developed a DIY energy audit toolkit that offers free energy-saving items.
In the Palomar Community College District, the Zero Net Energy Maintenance & Operations building in San Marcos shows what can be achieved when aggressive sustainability goals are set. The campus uses low-flow irrigation, rainwater capture systems, daylighting and thermal chimneys. The college also promoted sustainable design by hosting tours of the new building for other colleges and design teams.
SDG&E offers customers a variety of ways to save energy and money, including free on-site energy efficiency audits and zero-interest financing for energy-efficient upgrades. The company recently launched its Power Your Drive for Fleets program, which helps businesses with medium- and heavy-duty fleets cut operating and maintenance costs by moving to zero-emission vehicles and equipment.
