Tennessee is still in the running for a longtime target who's ranked among the nation's top edge rushers in the 2022 class. Five-star junior defensive end Jeremiah Alexander of Thompson High School in Alabaster, Ala., a former Alabama commitment, released a list of his top six college choices Friday night in a post on his Twitter account, and the Vols joined five other SEC teams on his list of favorites.
Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and LSU are the other front-runners for the 6-foot-2, 235-pound Alexander, who reopened his recruitment on Oct. 27 after being committed to the Crimson Tide for more than seven months. Both predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball still point to Alabama as the favorite to land him.
Alexander is rated a five-star prospect in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, where he's ranked the No. 12 overall prospect and No. 1 weakside defensive end in the 2022 class and the No. 1 junior from the state of Alabama. He's also a top-15 prospect nationally in 247Sports' rankings.
Tennessee extended an early scholarship offer to Alexander in October 2018, and he visited the Vols for the first time nearly a year ago — on Jan. 25 — for one of their junior days. He spoke highly of Tennessee after the trip, saying "it was nice" and "didn’t disappoint."
“Riding around campus, the campus was pretty nice,” he said after his visit with the Vols last year. “I liked the campus a lot. … I just feel like I have a lot more to learn about Tennessee, and they have a lot more to learn about me. I’m interested in Tennessee, so I’m going to show interest and go back up there as many times as I can.”
Alexander originally named a top three of Alabama, Georgia and LSU on Dec. 9, 2019, before announcing his commitment to Alabama three months later.
According to 247Sports' official evaluation of Alexander, written by Charles Power, he's "already fairly developed with well-proportioned muscle mass on a good-sized frame with long arms."
"(Alexander) is advanced physically and looks to be ahead of the curve from a developmental standpoint," Power wrote of Alexander. "Has been a highly productive player for one of the top high school programs in Alabama. Is primarily deployed as a standup edge rusher. Plays with advanced strength with the ability to drive offensive linemen into the backfield and disengage on command. Also has high-level quickness and play speed both off the edge and in pursuit.
"Looks to play with a high effort level and finds several ways to impact the game. Despite being well-coached, will need to continue honing his technique as a pass rusher. It will be interesting to see where he ends up in terms of ultimate size over the next few years, as he could grow into a full-time edge defender or play as a space linebacker.
"Projects as a multi-year starter at the Power Five level with the upside of developing into an early round NFL Draft pick."
