When the Minnesota Whitecaps and Toronto Six faced off last Sunday, the two teams produced a thrilling game that saw the Whitecaps overcome a four-goal deficit and cap off their comeback with a five-round shootout victory.
The rematch didn’t disappoint.
The Six and Whitecaps traded tallies throughout the game until a last-minute goal from Six forward Mikyla Grant-Mentis put Toronto ahead 4-3 in the final minute, propelling her team to a win on Saturday night in the NWHL’s Lake Placid, N.Y. bubble.
Grant-Mentis scored the first goal just over seven minutes into the first period. Then the two teams went back-and-forth, with the Whitecaps (3-1) matching the Six (3-1) each time they jumped ahead.
Nina Rodgers evened the score for the Whitecaps with a power-play goal early in the second period. After Taylor Woods responded for the Six, Brooke White-Lancette knotted it up again for the Whitecaps late in the period.
Toronto and Minnesota — Rodgers, again — each scored in the third period before Grant-Mentis lifted the Six to victory.
The Whitecaps were originally scheduled to play the Beauts on Saturday, but those plans were scrapped after the Metropolitan Riveters left the bubble due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests. That caused a schedule adjustment for the rest of the teams in the league.
The Whitecaps will play the Connecticut Whale on Monday at 4:30 p.m. as they jockey for playoff positioning. Monday will mark their final game of the regular season, with the Isobel Cup semifinals taking place on Thursday.
