HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Ohio Dominican baseball team allowed the first six runs to Hillsdale Saturday afternoon before rallying for a 9-6 win over the conference rival on the road.

The Panthers outscored the Chargers 9-0 over the final six frames to improve to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in Great Midwest play. Hillsdale drops back to .500 overall (5-5) and in conference action (1-1).

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

  • Hillsdale did all of its offensive damage over the first three frames, including the bottom of the first, where they scored two runs.
  • The Chargers added four runs on three hits in the third inning to take control of the game, 6-0.
  • Ohio Dominican was quick to respond though, registering its own four-run frame in the fourth. The first three batters reached in the inning and ODU took advantage of two HC errors to score the first two runs.
  • The fourth-inning rally was capped with a two-run home run by sophomore Derek Kutrubs (Brunswick, Ohio).
  • Redshirt freshman Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) was called on in relief for the first time this spring in the bottom of the fourth. Martinez stranded seven Charger runners over three innings of work and did not concede a run while striking out three.
  • The Panthers tied the game with a two-run blast from junior Zac Wilson (Hamilton, Ohio) in the sixth and took the lead for good in the seventh as freshman Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio) hit a sac fly to left field.
  • McFadden drove in his second run in the top of the ninth with another sac fly and junior Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) scored on a passed ball to put ODU in front 9-6.
  • Freshman Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) allowed just three runners over the final three innings on the bump for the Black & Gold. Bolander picked up his fourth save of the season, striking out four batters, including a pair in the ninth.

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • One day after combining for 32 runs and 30 hits, it was Hillsdale who held a slight 8-7 advantage in the hit column on Saturday.
  • The Chargers though, committed four errors, while ODU played a clean game defensively.
  • Both Wilson and sophomore David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) were 2-for-4 to pace the Panthers at the plate.
  • With the two home runs, ODU has already recorded six long balls just half way through the weekend four-game series at Hillsdale.
  • Ohio Dominican struck out seven batters in the game, all coming by Martinez and Bolander in relief.
  • Saturday marked a game of firsts as well, as Martinez logged his first collegiate victory and Kutrubs belted his first collegiate home run.

UP NEXT

  • Ohio Dominican and Hillsdale will close the conference-opening series with a pair of seven-inning games on Sunday, March 13.
  • The doubleheader is slated for a noon start.
