The bizarrely named R-Type Final 2 now has a demo out on the PlayStation 4 and the Switch, it is also surprisingly great.
While I am a long-time fan of the classic R-Type arcade games and also have a soft spot for the often-overlooked R-Type Delta, I wasn’t all that into the original R-Type Final.
Released on the PlayStation 2 back in 2003, it took a more branched approach to the level design and had an enormous number of playable ships, 101 in fact.
Having things like the OF-1 Daedalus from Image Fight appear in the game was great, but the actual level design left a lot to be desired.
This was especially infuriating after R-Type Delta, which had thoroughly excellent levels with all sorts of fascinating surprises.
From the first level available in this new demo though, it looks like R-Type Final 2 may end up being a lot better than its predecessor.
No doubt there will be an enormous roster of ships to unlock and choose from, but I am more looking forward to how the game will handle its levels.
The demo is more of a homage to the first arcade game than anything else, with a familiar boss appearing at the end, but I am hopeful it is indicative of things to come in the full game.
By contrast, the opening level of the original R-Type Final was all over the place, with the camera going crazy to make the game look needlessly cinematic. So R-Type Final 2 looks like a return to carefully considered form.
R-Type Final 2 will be released on April 30 for the Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
