A woman died and six people — including two children — were displaced due to a residential fire in Englewood early Friday, according to Chicago police.
About 5:20 a.m., officers responded to reports of a fire at a two-family home in the 6900 block of South Stewart Avenue, police said.
The fire started in the rear of the first floor, though the specific cause of the fire is under investigation, said Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford. Responding firefighters quickly put out the fire, but in the room where the fire started, a woman in her 30s was found and pronounced dead at the scene, Langford said.
Smoke detectors on the second floor of the building went off, alerting the other family and allowing six people — four adults and two children ages 2 and 11 — to exit the home safely without injury, Langford said.
“The smoke alarms did what they were supposed to do,” Langford said. “They were able to escape as soon as smoke alarms went off.”
The Office of Fire Investigation Division was on the scene investigating, police said.
