CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A shallow nasal swab performed from the comforts and convenience of you home can be used to detect COVID-19, with certain limitations.
The BinaxNOW COVID-19 Antigen Self Test was given Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA in March and can be purchased at many drug stores without a prescription for $23.99.
See the video above for a look at each step in the self test process.
The kit includes two self tests. Results from the test come 15 minutes after performing the nasal swab and placing it inside a card with a test strip and reagent included in the kit.
In its Emergency Use Authorization, the FDA notes a negative test should be considered presumptive and does not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection. The BinaxNOW instructions recommend individuals who test negative use the kit’s second test 36 hours after taking the first one. The test results do not meet travel requirements for COVID-19 testing.
