Six Kentucky football players were charged Thursday with first-degree burglary and sophomore safety Vito Tisdale added a charge of first-degree wanton endangerment in connection with an incident at a private party on March 6, Lexington police say. The other Wildcats charged are cornerback Joel Williams, running back JuTahn McClain, cornerback Andru Phillips, offensive lineman R.J. Adams and receiver Earnest Sanders IV.
According to police, three uninvited people entered a residence where the party was held and were asked to leave. They became upset, threatened to return and did so a short time later with additional players. The group forced their way into the residence, police say, and one suspect was observed pointing a firearm at someone. Tisdale was identified as the person with a handgun.
UK Athletics issued a statement Thursday saying the university and department “take these matters very seriously” and are “closely evaluating this issue before determining next steps.”
Coach Mark Stoops issued a separate statement.
“Out of respect for the legal process, I cannot comment on the charges,” he said. “We have been aware of this matter since March, as we withheld the players from team activities while a student conduct review was held. Based on the outcome of the review, the players returned to activity in June. We are evaluating the current situation as we receive more information.”
The Kentucky players, according to a source familiar situation, deny that a weapon was present and contend that someone at the gathering (a fraternity party) called them the N-word and an altercation ensued but no one was seriously injured.
