NEW ULM — A sold-out crowd attended the Brown County Demolition Derby Saturday.
All seats were purchased an hour before the first green flag waved, but the audience squeezed in tight to let even more spectators view the vehicular carnage.
Saturday’s derby was divided into six debris–compacts, mid-size, the 80s and older, Old Irons, Trucks and a Free for All.
Of the six demos, the Old Irons had the toughest competition with 14 vehicles competing to be the last car running. The Old Irons was a special derby as most of the drivers were veterans of demo derby, some with decades of experience.
The Old Irons was the longest derby of the night, but in the end, Kyle Rewitzer of New Ulm in the #10 car was the victor with Jeremy Marquardt finishing second.
The shortest derby of the night was in the mid-size car division with seven cars competing. The #116 car driven by Cole Martin made quick work of the competition. The derby was over in a few minutes. Martin’s vehicle was even able to drive off the field without needing a tow.
After the derby, Martin said he is a third family member at the demo derby after his grandfather and father. He said in the six years of driving in derbies, it was the fastest one he’s seen. Martin credited his vehicle’s strong front end for the victory. A metal bar on the front of the car held up through considerable damage and managed to deal out even more destruction.
Fans of the demolition derby were not disappointed with the night’s fun. After a year without a demo derby, fans were eager to come back.
The fairgrounds will host its next demolition derby in October.
