Storms and Shipwrecks on Lake Superior: 1 p.m. Oct. 23, Sugarloaf Cove, 9096 Minnesota Highway 61, Schroeder. Two Harbors-based photographer and naturalist Phil Hartley will discuss Lake Superior's historical storms and shipwrecks. The presentation includes many of Hartley's photos of storm chasing from Duluth to Grand Marais over the last 15 years. Free; $5 parking fee for non-members. Guided Hike Series: Superior Hiking Trail: Arrive early to check in and be ready to board shuttle by 2:45 p.m. Oct. 24, Martin Road Trailhead, 3801 Martin Road, Duluth. Beginner-to-intermediate 3.1-mile trail from Hartley Park to the Martin Road Trailhead. All ages; under 16 must be accompanied by adult. Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 10, Split Rock Lighthouse, 3713 Split Rock Lighthouse Road, Two Harbors. Annual event commemorates sinking of freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of 29 crew members Nov. 10, 1975. Lighthouse, fog signal building and visitor center will be open. Costumed interpreters will greet visitors and provide historic site and shipwreck info. At 4:30 p.m., the lighthouse will close temporarily while the names of the crew members are read to the tolling of a ship's bell. Bring flashlight or headlamp. Wilderness First Aid Certification Course: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 13-14, Bagley Nature Area and Classroom, 631 W. St. Marie St., Duluth. This 16-hour, two-day WFA course, presented by SOLO Wilderness Medicine & Cast Outdoor Adventures, focuses on the basic skills of response and assessment; musculoskeletal injuries; environmental emergencies; survival skills; soft tissue injuries; and medical emergencies; 75% of the class is scenario-based and outdoors.
