Astros tender contracts to six arbitration-eligible players - Houston Chronicle

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

The Astros tendered contracts to all six of their arbitration-eligible players prior to Tuesday night’s deadline, completing another procedural move preceding an impending work stoppage.

Utilityman Aledmys Díaz is projected to be the most expensive player of the sextet, which also includes pitchers Framber Valdez, Rafael Montero, Ryne Stanek, Josh James and Phil Maton. Players reach arbitration eligibility after three years of major league service time and, most of the time, remain arbitration-eligible until reaching free agency after their sixth year of service.

Houston also outrighted reliever Andre Scrubb off the 40-man roster, clearing a spot for Justin Verlander's impending addition. Verlander is in agreement on a one-year, $25 million contract with a player option for 2023, but the deal has not been made official by the team.

According to MLBTradeRumors’ projections, the Astros’ six arbitration-eligible players are estimated to earn a combined $14.5 million. The deadline for teams to exchange salary figures with their arbitration-eligible players is Jan. 14, but baseball’s looming lockout puts that in peril.

Major League Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday. Industry-wide expectation is players and owners will not reach an agreement before it does, leading to a lockout and leaving the entire sport in flux.

Díaz and Montero are arbitration-eligible for the third and final time. Both are scheduled to enter free agency following the 2022 season.

Díaz could begin the season as Houston’s starting shortstop if the team makes no outside addition this winter. He is predicted to get $4 million in arbitration, according to MLBTradeRumors. Montero, whom Houston acquired from Seattle last July, is worth $3.1 million according to the same projections.

Valdez is arbitration-eligible for the first time and projected to get a $3.2 million salary. Both Maton and Stanek will go through the process a second time and are predicted to earn $1.4 million and $2.1 million, respectively.
