LARAMIE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - After ending the University of Wyoming football season ended on a high note with a bowl game victory, the rollercoaster rebooted for the Cowboys on Wednesday. Six players announced they would be entering the transfer portal over a 48 hour period.
It started with Quarterback Levi Williams and Wide Receiver Isaiah Neyor announcing on social media that they would be exploring their options in the transfer portal on Wednesday afternoon. The two announcements came almost five minutes apart.
Williams was coming off arguably his most impressive performance as a Cowboy in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. He rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns, and he added a 42-yard touchdown toss through the air to a Neyor, which netted him MVP honors of the bowl game.
He said after Tuesday’s game, “We knew we had it in us. This week it was preparing. We had an option we could either roll over and feel sorry for ourselves after a loss against Hawaii or we could come out and play. We knew we had to face adversity and we did. Kudos to the seniors and all the guys for responding.”
The sophomore gunslinger out of Texas made eight appearances for the brown and gold this season including six starts. He threw nine touchdowns and five interceptions for 990 yards, and he rushed for another five touchdowns and 482 yards.
Out of high school in the Lone Star State, Williams had offers from Wyoming and the University of Houston.
Neyor caught eight of Williams’ nine touchdown passes this season, and he finished the year with 13 total touchdowns. His 12 receiving touchdowns led the Mountain West Conference, and he finished second in the conference in yards per catch.
In Tuesday’s bowl game, Neyor hauled in five catches for 87 yards and a score.
Shortly after announcing his decision, Neyor began revealing all of the new offers that he was receiving. He’s revealed on his Twitter an impressive list including multiple schools from the Pac-12, Mountain West and offers from schools in the Big 12 and SEC.
On Thursday, Quarterback Sean Chambers announced his intentions to move on from Laramie, too.
Chambers started the first seven games of the season for the Cowboys under center. He led the Pokes to a 4-0 start before a 10 consecutive scoreless quarters streak during Mountain West Conference play, and Williams took over the job.
As the starter, Chambers compiled a 13-7 record over four seasons. He finished this season through the air with six touchdowns and seven interceptions for 1,125 yards. He added three touchdowns and 198 yards on the ground.
With the potential departures of Williams and Chambers, only three quarterbacks currently remain on the roster in Laramie. Caden Becker, a three-star quarterback recruit, signed with the Pokes during the early signing period and will join Junior Jayden Clemons and Redshirt Freshman Gavin Beerup and Hank Gibbs in the quarterback room.
Safeties Rome Weber and Cameron Murray also revealed that they have entered the transfer portal along with Victor Jones, a defensive end.
Cornerback Keyon Blankenbaker announced he would be entering the transfer portal earlier in December, which makes it seven players from the Cowboys that have chosen to potentially leave Laramie since the loss against Hawaii in the regular season finale.
Players do have the option to stick with their current school after entering the transfer portal. Fresno State Quarterback Jake Haener recently did this with the Bulldogs.
