Elon Musk says Tesla is making progress on its Steam integration

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the company is getting closer to integrating Valve's Steam gaming platform into its in-car gaming console. This integration would result in a huge array of video games inside Tesla vehicles.

Elon says that Tesla is making progress on Steam integration and the automaker is aiming for a demonstration next month.

Coincidently Tesla has its AI Day 2 event scheduled for September 30th, which was pushed back from its original August 19th date. Tesla plans to show off its humanoid robot among other "many cool updates." This may be a good time for Tesla to share its progress on Stream integration as well.

Tesla's current in-car gaming adds a lot of value to the Tesla ownership experience, but the automaker has bigger plans for gaming inside its vehicles.

Elon recently stated that “entertainment will be critical when cars drive themselves,” which he believes Tesla can achieve later this year.

In addition to Steam integration, Tesla offers video games inside its vehicles through "Tesla Arcade", which could eventually compete with other gaming platforms such as Apple's AppStore, the Playstation Store, or the Xbox Marketplace.

The new Model S and Model X feature a new gaming computer that is capable of 10 teraflops of processing power, enabling in-car gaming on par with today’s newest consoles.

The new gaming system is integrated and connects to both the front and rear screens inside the Model S and Model X.

Elon also revealed that the new computer has more storage to store more games on the platform. Tesla's Bluetooth controller compatibility will allow gaming from any seat.

The website videocardz compared Tesla's specs with next-gen consoles, showing that at least spec-wise, Tesla's gaming platform in the Model S and X is on-par with the latest generation of gaming consoles.

Tesla owners are excited about the potential for Steam integration coming to their cars soon. While this has been an exciting development, according to Tesla hacker @GreenTheOnly, only the new Model S and X feature the discrete AMD GPU that provides "next-gen" level graphics.

MCU 3-based Model 3 and Model Y vehicles do not include the discrete GPU, which means that some games may be exclusive to the Model S or X.

It's not clear whether Steam integration will be available for MCU 2 vehicles, although Tesla has a history of creating software that supports as many of their cars as possible.

Tesla still occasionally updates their original 2012 Model S vehicles with UI improvements and new features.

Tesla previously highlighted high-end games such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. We should know more soon.

Apple's CarPlay running on a Tesla

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now available in every Tesla model - kind of. Michał Gapiński released the second version of his workaround, the Tesla Android Project.

In February, the Polish developer first demonstrated a hack allowing CarPlay and Android Auto in Teslas. It was difficult to tell exactly how he did it, but now he has created a new video showing off his latest version, complete with a website listing what is needed and how to do it.

However, if your tech-savvy ends at downloading apps or wiggling the cables, this is not for you. Gapiński included a shopping list of items required, including a Raspberry Pi, a series of small single-board computers, an LTE modem, a mini fan, something called a Geekworm TC358743XBG HDMI-CSI-2 for video, and the list goes on. Then you get into the 15-step process to make this work.

According to its creator, this method is a simplified way to encourage more people to use the workaround. The website states, "The main objective for this release has been simple: usability. For the project to scale and become popular in the Tesla community, it needs to provide a responsive Android experience. Otherwise, people won't use it."

The pay-off appears to be worth becoming tech savvy. Gapiński uploaded a 6-minute video (below) demonstrating the newest version of his work.

He says he has reduced some of the components, and the installation guide should allow users to be up and running "in a matter of minutes." The video shows Apple Music playing, maps routing to destinations and YouTube playing - even when the Model 3 is not in park.

This latest version comes just days after Elon Musk made several critical assessments of the current Tesla software, calling the browser trash and saying that Tesla can do better with the user interface.

It also comes just weeks after Apple revealed a significantly improved CarPlay at the 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference. The redesigned CarPlay appears much more customizable, and it's said to seamlessly integrate into vehicles instead of having a CarPlay window take over the screen.

Apple shows off the new CarPlay coming next year

During Apple's WWDC, the company stated that CarPlay is a must-have feature for people who are car shopping. According to Apple, 79 percent of buyers in the United States would only consider a vehicle that is CarPlay-capable. Well, good news for those shoppers, it appears Gapiński has just made Teslas CarPlay-capable.

Aptera believes the Tesla connector should be the charging standard, not CCS

A petition has started asking the United States government to make Tesla connectors the standard for all electric vehicles in the country.

Aptera, an electric car start-up, is behind the Change.org petition.

The founders of Aptera, Chris Anthony and Steve Fambro, explained why they started the petition.

They write: While electric vehicle technology has rapidly advanced, the charging standard in the U.S. has not. CCS and SAE J1772, the U.S.'s common standards, are clunky, cumbersome, and expensive.

The solar-powered car company also linked to a report that cited a survey called the J.D. Power U.S. Electric Public Charging Study. Tesla was the decisive winner in every category.

Yet, another indication that backs up their claim request to make Tesla plugs the standard.

Aptera is asking the U.S. House of Representatives to look at the math, pointing to reports that Tesla Supercharger stations cost 1/5 the price of other networks. In addition, it says that switching to Tesla’s charging standards would save $4 billion on projected charging infrastructure spending through 2027.

The Biden administration approved a $1 trillion infrastructure bill in November of 2021, with $5 billion dedicated to building a network with thousands of charging stations.

While Tesla is already the industry leader in Supercharging, the company continues to improve. V4 Superchargers could be deployed later this year, offering charging speeds of up to 350kW.

The CCS, J1772 and Tesla connector profiles compared

The current V3 Superchargers can handle 250kW, but these units are expected to be upgraded to 35% faster charging this year.

It’s also believed that the V4 Superchargers will offer CCS support, allowing non-Tesla vehicles access to the network.

Aptera used its Twitter account to launch the campaign to its 11k followers.

By the way, Aptera follows only one account " Elon Musk.

The company uses a short video with emojis to show how they feel about the other connectors. It’s believed the start-up will use Tesla connectors for solar-powered, three-wheeled EVs.

If you feel the Tesla connector should be the industry charging standard, you can sign the petition.
