Glassblowing demo debuts at Champlain Valley Fair - WCAX

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) - The Champlain Valley Fair is known for its traditions, but there are also new things for visitors to check out this year, including a glassblowing demonstration.

It’s an ancient art, but it comes alive for fair visitors.

“I think the material itself is kind of magical, so if you’ve never seen it before turning liquid into objects. it’s pretty satisfying thing to watch,” said Ryan Gothrup with Mobile Glass Studios.

He starts crafting a bowl. It’s unassuming at first. A ball of yellowish glass. But under his expert touch, it transforms. First, with color that’s added to the outside. White to start and then blue. Each time, with heat -- just the right amount. Finesse for the fragile -- and blazing hot -- art. That furnace is 2100 degrees. But he can take the heat. And the finale -- a whirl using gravity to shape the bowl is something else.

Once the piece is finished, it’s into the annealer to finish -- a process they say takes up to 10 hours or so. Gothrup is from Nashville, Tennessee, and g to numerous fairs and festivals. He says bringing awareness to the work that goes into crafting the delicate decor is important. “It’s always good to educate the public on something they don’t see every day, because this is not something you get to see unless you go to the studio,” he said. “We make 4-H pigs and gnomes and fish and cowboy hats. We just have fun and try to make a lot of unique items in front of people and then teach them about the ancient art of glass blowing.”

Spectators “oohed” and “ahhed” and told us it’s neat to see the process up close. “I had seen glass bowling before but not like that. They usually are basic bottles or something but that was really cool. I never knew how they did the ruffle but that was really interesting,” said Kat Little of Essex.

What happens to the glassware when they’re done with it? They say they give it to the fair, which sells it. The money made from that goes back to support agriculture education for kids.

All about Cult of the Lamb, from genre to the free demo - Win.gg

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

If you like games about crafting furniture while also violently carving through demonic enemies, Cult of the Lamb is worth checking out.

Cult of the Lamb is the latest indie smash hit by Massive Monster, the same studio behind The Adventure Pals and Never Give Up. Despite its cutesy art style, the game’s core premise is leading a cult of ravenous followers in a mission to restore a forsaken god.

Cult of the Lamb’s juxtaposed aesthetic and Twitch integration have already made it a hit for streamers. Here’s what newcomers need to know about the game.

What kind of game genre is Cult of the Lamb?

Cult of the Lamb’s genre is a mix between Animal Crossing-style settlement building and Bind of Isaac-like rogue-lite combat.

Cult of the Lamb is somewhat unique in that it splits its two genres into two distinct sections. For the base-building, players walk around mingling with cultists and building new structures. Once they exit the camp, the game turns into a rogue-lite complete with procedural generation and game-breaking item combos. Players can incidentally gather resources for the base during levels, but combat is very much the main focus.

The tone of Cult of the Lamb is more light-hearted than its genre blend would suggest. Instead of pure survival, cultists are more concerned with pretty decorations and tasty food. Still, they often willingly sacrifice themselves in the name of the player. The combat sections are darker in tone with frightening boss designs. However, it’s all presented in a fairy tale style with lots of attention to detail.

Cult of the Lamb platforms

Cult of the Lamb is currently available on all of the following platforms:

  • Nintendo Switch
  • PC
  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series

In addition to the game, Massive Monster also offers the official soundtrack for $9.99 and the optional Cultist Pack for $4.99. The day-one DLC includes five new cosmetic forms for cult followers and seven unique decorative items for the base. The Cultist Pack does not seem to give an in-game advantage in any way. Players can purchase all content as a bundle for $29.98.

For gamers who are unsure if Cult of the Lamb is their type of game, publisher Devolver Digital offers a free demo of the game on Steam. The button to download the demo is below the developer’s social links near the green price tag. It includes the first two rogue-lite combat levels and the demo came out alongside other Devolver Digital projects including Anger Foot and Terra Nil.

Cult of the Lamb Twitch extension is a hit with streamers

Thanks to its cutesy, yet occultic charm and fun gameplay, Cult of the Lamb has become a popular pick for Twitch streamers.

The game has averaged 19,892 viewers for its release week with peaks over 150,000. Part of the success is due to a unique Twitch integration feature on the PC version of the game. Cult of the Lamb can parse a streamer’s chat room and turn watchers into in-game cultists. Viewers can then customize their avatar by donating Twitch bits customizable by the streamer.

Splatoon 3 Demo Server Tick Rate Is Apparently 30% Slower Than Original's - Nintendo Life

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Splatoon3 Splatana Wiper

Everyone got their first hands-on taste of Splatoon 3's online this weekend with the Splatfest World Premiere demo. In the first Splatfest for Splatoon 3, Team Rock snatched victory, but for some, winning wasn't the goal — simply trying out the new modes and the online was enough. Some even wanted to know what the server tick rates were like!

Splatoon dataminer OatmealDome has shared their findings of the demo's tick rate (thanks, My Nintendo News!). Tick rate is measured in hertz and records how many times per second information is updated. And — for the demo version, at least — Splatoon 3's comes in a 16Hz.

Now, that sounds pretty low — especially when most online games have refresh rates of around 30 or 60Hz with some going well beyond that — but this is actually around the same as Splatoon 2's tick rate. You can compare the two Switch ink-splatting games below.

The really interesting part is that this is actually slower than the original Splatoon's tick rate. The Wii U game had a tick rate of 25hz, meaning Splatoon 3 is around 30% slower than the first game. At least, based on the demo.

One Twitter user asked OatmealDome if there were any benefits to having a slower tick rate, and apparently, it does! It reduces the bandwidth requirements for online connections by reducing transmission rates.

But really, the big takeaway here is that this is just based on the demo. OatmealDome says they need to test the full game to come up with a more accurate tick rate for Splatoon 3, so the final release may be a bit faster.

Splatoon 3's demo allowed us all to try out a few new weapons, a new map, and the new Tricolor Turf War, which we'd love to know what you think of. So check out our poll and vote to share your thoughts:

How do you feel about this slower tick rate in Splatoon 3? Did you have any issues playing online? Let us know!

GamesCon 2022 Aliens: Dark Descent Demo Impressions! - AvP Galaxy

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Following a hands-off demo of Tindalos Interactive’s upcoming Aliens: Dark Descent at GamesCon 2022, video game outlets are now starting to share their impressions. IGN uploaded a new video talking about their time with the demo. While the video doesn’t go into many new specifics, they do talk about how Dark Descent will also feature tower-defence like moments where your squad is required to hold-up in a location, welding doors shut and setting up turrets.

The video also talks about how you can recruit civilians such as engineers to improve your home base. IGN also compared the video to XCOM and Rogue, re-iterating that the world of Aliens: Dark Descent is a persistent world where you can revisit locations, and they will be in the same state you left them in with doors welding shut.

VG247 also shared a written impressions’ article that went into far more detail than IGN. Once again, VG247 made the comparison to XCOM, but said it went fair beyond being XCOM reskinned in Aliens.

The connection to the Firaxis strategy reboot is undeniable, obviously. A glance at the structure of the game, where you return to a hub base to manage soldiers with light RPG progression elements, or the pre-mission launch screen, makes it especially clear. It looks very similar. But, dig beyond that, particularly into the flow of combat and exploration in the strategy scenarios – and suddenly you see how Dark Descent is putting a distinctly different twist on the idea of a squad-based tactics game where you fend off powerful extraterrestrial creatures.

Most different is movement, which is both real-time and free-form, meaning you don’t have time to think about decision-making in the same way and movement takes place in full 3D as opposed to on a grid. This ramps up the pressure as your marines push through cramped corridors, making use of motion trackers (this is the Alien universe, after all) to keep track of where aliens are stalking. You can get jumped at any time, and there’s no turns or pausing to save you.

Keeping track of the map is important, because you’re not just on temporary ‘battle box’ maps that exist only for firefights. You’re exploring a wider area, a base that you’ll gradually uncover. It’s almost a bit like how a planet might work in a Metroid game, even though it’s a completely different sort of game – and you’ll even be able to uncover shortcuts across the planet to that end. Perspective-wise, the map, real-time movement and camera perspective almost makes it look like a spacebound Diablo, at least for a moment.

GamesCon 2022 Aliens: Dark Descent Demo Impressions!

VG247 also elaborated on the combat, stating that while it wasn’t turned based, there was still an ability to slow time down enough to allow you to issue orders to your squad. Talking on the combat system they said:

There’s a lot of tactics to manage, too. You’ve got a squad of four that can be any of six different classes, each with abilities, weapons, and skills to consider. The two key stats to manage are health and stress – the former familiar and the latter a representation of the sanity of your marines. The more stressed they are, the worse their performance will be – topping out in outright panic, where a Marine is rendered practically useless.

Combat is real time, but you can slow things to a crawl, allowing orders to be issued. This also has the bonus of looking extremely cool. If you set up an ambush in a doorway, watching a hail of bullets slow-mo slam into a Xenomorph is extremely satisfying.

Footage from Aliens: Dark Descent’s announcement trailer was also included in a montage for the Disney & Marvel Games Showcase taking place on the 6th of September, so we’re hoping to see more about the game at D23 Expo. Be sure to head on over to our Aliens: Dark Descent page to check out what we know about the game so far!

Sonic Frontiers fans banned from filming the Gamescom demo after finding too many spoilers - Gamesradar

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

The Gamescom demo for Sonic Frontiers proved to be a goldmine of new details for series fans, even if Sega itself didn't intend for all of that information to become public.

If you're unfamiliar with Gamescom - well, first, check out everything announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live - it's an annual video game convention taking place in Cologne, Germany. In the vein of shows like PAX (or the public E3s), there's a big show floor where attendees can go hands-on with upcoming games. This year, that includes Sonic Frontiers.

The Gamescom Sonic Frontiers demo has a 15-minute time limit, but according to fans who got in during the first few days of the show, Sega neglected to disable the game's autosave features on the show floor. That meant that people could keep making progress well beyond the 15 minutes of the demo, uncovering secrets that were not yet meant to be public.

Like, for example, the appearance of Big the Cat.

That one's not technically a spoiler, as Big's role in the game was revealed by a Game Informer preview (opens in new tab) last month. This is the first time we've actually seen what Big looks like in-game, however.

If you want larger spoilers, folks like Sonic_Frontier on Twitter (opens in new tab) have been collating footage from the show, which reveals things like previously unseen Cyber Space stages. If you don't want spoilers, well, just be careful when you're browsing Twitter.

It seems we're unlikely to see too much more, however, as according to folks at the show, Sega's banned filming at its booth (opens in new tab). If more footage trickles out, well, at least it'll probably be filmed from much further away.

Sonic Frontiers has been confirmed for launch on November 8.

Don’t miss the limited time demo event this Saturday! Also, catch a deeper video look at Splatoon 3 - News - Nintendo

Nintendo Switch
Learn more

The Splatoon™ 3 game comes out on Sept. 9, so it’s time to dive into an ocean of new info (or, at least, a decent-sized bay/lagoon).

Let’s first start with Nintendo Treehouse: Live | August 2022 and then swim on over to Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere demo inkfo, uh, info.

Nintendo Treehouse: Live | August 2022

Contrary to popular belief, the Nintendo Treehouse is NOT a wooden treehouse where Donkey Kong hides his banana stash. Instead, it’s a collection of friendly Nintendo of America folks who have the inside scoop about upcoming games!

Please watch the video for a 20,000 league deep dive into Splatoon 3, including looks at the story mode, weapons, and two of the upcoming stages that will be featured in the Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere demo (more on that later).

Nintendo Treehouse: Live | August 2022 also featured an upcoming life-simulation JRPG from Square-Enix called HARVESTELLA. You can also catch that specific segment in a separate article!

Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere demo event

Want to get a taste of Splatoon 3 mayhem before the game comes out? Starting today, Nintendo Switch Online members can access the Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere demo. It’s the perfect place for newcomers because you can also play the game’s tutorial and take a scenic stroll through Splatsville.

Of course, the main event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. PT. Yep, that’s when the Splatfest is!

Well that’s cool…what the heck is a Splatfest?

Oh right—we should probably explain that. A Splatfest is a big deal for Inklings and Octolings around the world. Basically, you’ll join one of three causes and try to win in-game battles to champion your ideals. Splatoon and Splatoon™ 2 players are probably used to joining one of two sides, but yeah…Splatoon 3 has THREE sides. Talk about your triple threat!

After you choose your destiny, you’ll participate in Splatfest Battles. The goal of a match is to ink as much of the stage as you can. The more matches your side wins, the closer you’ll be to a resounding victory.

The burning theme of this Splatfest is one of the oldest questions in human history*. Which is the best: Rock, Paper, or Scissors?

Yes, we only ask the tough questions here! Do you rock out with rocks? Are you pals with paper? Or do you see yourself as a super scissor supporter? Let your voice be heard in Splatfest form!

So how does it work with three teams?

Yeah, let’s explain that one. This event is actually split into two distinct parts:

  • From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. PT, teams will battle each other one team at a time (just like past games in the series).

  • From 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. PT, Tricolor Turf War battles become available, which are 4v2v2. Yup, that means that three teams will be battling at once!

Sounds good, but what if I’m not a Nintendo Switch Online member?

Don’t worry, we got you covered! Everyone who grabs the demo will also receive a code redeemable for a 7-day free trial membership** (the code*** will be sent to the email address linked to your Nintendo Account).

Anything else?

Nah, that’s about it. If you want to download the Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere demo and get started with the tutorial, please use the link below. Just don’t miss the boat when it comes to the Splatfest itself—we’ll see you on Aug. 27 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. PT.

Good luck out there!

*OK, not really. But hey, it’s at least in the top 60% of oldest questions! Maybe!

**Any Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required for online features. Free trial automatically converts to 1-month auto-renewing membership unless automatic renewal is turned off by the end of the free trial. Credit card/PayPal account required for 18+. Free trial cannot be redeemed for a Nintendo Switch Online – Expansion Pack membership nor by a Nintendo Account with an active Individual Membership or Family Membership. Not available in all countries. Internet access required for online features. Terms apply. nintendo.com/switch-online

***Your Nintendo Switch Online trial code can be redeemed starting August 25, 2022 and must be redeemed before its expiration on August 31, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Ericsson, Nokia, Google demo mult network slices on Android 13 - RCR Wireless News

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

URSP support lets one handset juggle enterprise and consumer slices at the same time

In separate announcements, Nokia and Ericsson recently confirmed they had worked with Google to demonstrate support for multiple network slices on a Google Pixel 6 Pro handset, operating Android 13. The demo showed how one handset can support both enterprise and consumer slicing applications through User Equipment Route Selection Policy (URSP) rules.

“New application-based URSP slicing solutions widen operators’ 5G network business opportunities. We are excited to develop and test new standards-based URSP technologies with Android that will ensure that our customers can provide leading-edge enterprise and consumer services using Android devices and Nokia’s 4G/5G networks,” said Ari Kynäslahti, Nokia Mobile Networks’ head of strategy and technology.

Android 12 already supports networking slicing, but the newer operating system’s support for URSP enables up to five enterprise-defined slices to be associated with a work profile. Nokia explained the potential benefits of multiple slice support on a single handset.

“An enterprise customer could send business-sensitive information using a secure and high-performing network slice while participating in a video call using another slice at the same time. Additionally, consumers could receive personalized network slicing services, for example for cloud gaming or high-quality video streaming,” said Nokia.

Ericsson noted there’s a fallback in cases where URSP rules have not been defined.

“Carriers can configure their network so traffic from work profile apps can revert to a pre-configured enterprise APN (Access Point Name) connection – meaning the device will always keep a separate mobile data connection for enterprise-related traffic even if the network does not support URSP delivery,” said Ericsson.

Ericsson said it tested devices in an Interoperability Device Testing (IODT) environment. Nokia said its tests used end-to-end Nokia 4G/5G network slicing products including Radio Access Network (RAN), transport core, and control and management systems.

“The trial included 5G network slice selection and connectivity based on enterprise and consumer application categories as well as 5G NR-LTE slice interworking functionalities,” said Nokia. Nokia has distinguished itself for shipping network slicing over both LTE and 5G networks. It noted that the URSP-based network slicing solution supports slice continuity over 4G and 5G networks.

The network slicing news comes a month after Ericsson and Telefónica announced a successful 5G Standalone (SA) network slicing test with 5TONIC, a Madrid, Spain-based research lab co-founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks. The proof-of-concept covered different use cases including 360-degree video production in motion, together with technology start-up YBVR; remote control of an automated guided vehicle (AGV); and gesture recognition with Spanish SME Fivecomm.

Electronics gadget maker Dyson brings its demo store to Dallas - The Dallas Morning News

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Add Dyson to the list of brands that believes it needs its own stores.

The U.K.-based tech gadget maker known for vacuums, air purifiers and hair styling tools opened a store at The Shops at Park Lane in Dallas on Thursday.

It’s Dyson’s sixth store in the U.S., and it’s set up to encourage people to handle and experience the brand’s products.

Dyson founder Sir James Dyson has been critical of how his machines have been sold “in a cluttered environment with stacked boxes or in the online equivalent, where endless pages of irrelevant and sometimes non-genuine product vie for attention.” He opened the first Dyson store in Paris in 2000 and now has more than 200 worldwide. The first U.S. store opened in 2017.

Shoppers can experiment with vacuums on various floor types and learn to use hair styling tools on displays of hair tresses, said Stefanie Kushida, Dyson regional head of demo stores. It’s a demo store, but customers can purchase Dyson’s pricey products.

The popular Dyson Supersonic hairdryer costs more than $430, while most competing hand-held hair dryers sell for well under $100. The Dyson Airwrap multi-styling tool costs $600 and comes with several attachments that can create curls and waves and straighten hair, all without extreme heat.

Dyson, which first introduced U.S. shoppers in 2002 to its proprietary bagless vacuum cleaners, touts its technology and engineering. Especially for the hair care tools, “it’s important to grasp the handle and feel the weight,” said Kate Craft, Dyson reliability engineer.

Dyson’s Dallas location is the first in the U.S. with virtual and in-person assistance for on-site repairs, product cleaning and free checkups, Kushida said. The company’s almost 200 machines and accessories are sold directly online and through major retailers. Best Buy and Costco are major sellers of its vacuums. Sephora, Ulta Beauty and Nordstrom are among the largest sellers of its hair care appliances.

Kushida said there are plans for more Dyson stores but declined to say how many the brand believes it can open in the U.S. Its other U.S. stores are in New York, California and Virginia.

At the Shops at Park Lane, the 3,000-square-foot store is in the former Eddie Bauer space in the same building with J. Crew Factory store and DXL.

Dyson is the latest electronics brand to open its own stores. Samsung’s “Experience” store opened in February in Frisco’s Stonebriar Centre. Google has two stores in New York that sell its products, including Pixel earbuds, Chromebook, Nest home products and other brands that use its operating system such as Fitbit smartwatches.

But no technology brand has opened as many branded stores in the U.S. as Apple.

Dyson, one of Britain’s largest privately held companies, was profitable last year even with challenges of the pandemic that included semiconductor shortages. Dyson’s 2021 sales of about $7 billion increased by 5%, according to The Times of London.

“Skeleton” Starship Lunar Lander Demo Not Required to Lift Off From Moon - SpacePolicyOnline.com

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

NASA is not requiring SpaceX to demonstrate that its Starship Human Landing System can take off from the lunar surface before using it for the Artemis III mission and the test vehicle will be a “skeleton” of the actual lander. NASA selected SpaceX to build the lander for Artemis III  preceded by an uncrewed test flight, but the head of NASA’s HLS program said today the demo does not include liftoff. She also stressed that Starship is still in the design and development phase with many challenges ahead, not ready to go as some seem to believe.

The silver first stage is called Super Heavy, and the second stage, covered in black thermal protection tiles, is Starship, a name also used to refer to the two of them together. Credit: SpaceX

Lisa Watson-Morgan, manager of the HLS program at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, spoke to NASA’s Lunar Exploration Analysis Group this morning along with other NASA officials about the recent selection of 13 regions at the lunar South Pole for the Artemis III landing.

Artemis III will return humans to the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo program. NASA currently expects the landing in late 2025, a little over three years from now.

SpaceX has been developing Starship for several years. Five test flights of prototypes of the second stage to an altitude of about 10 kilometers took place between December 2020 and May 2021. The first four ended in flames, but the fifth succeeded. The much larger first stage has not flown yet although “fit checks” of the fully assembled vehicle have taken place at SpaceX’s Boca Chica, TX test facility.

SpaceX founder and Chief Engineer Elon Musk tweeted yesterday that launching Starship to orbit is one of his two main goals this year.

SpaceX plans to use Starship for many purposes — launching satellites into Earth orbit as well as people and cargo to the Moon and Mars. The name Starship is used both for the entire vehicle and just for the second stage.

It is the second stage that will go to the Moon.

Starship is not designed to fly directly to the Moon like NASA’s Space Launch System, however. Instead, the first stage puts it only in Earth orbit. To go further, it must fill up with propellant at a yet-to-be-built orbiting fuel depot. Other Starships are needed to deliver propellant to the depot.

Watson-Morgan described the Concept of Operations for Starship’s Artemis III mission, starting with launch of the fuel depot, then a number of “propellant aggregation” launches to fill up the depot, then launch of the Starship that will go to Moon.

Her slide shows four propellant aggregation launches, but that is not a firm number. “How many? However many is needed, that’s how many will launch,” she said.

SpaceX and NASA are working together to demonstrate cryogenic fluid management in orbit and “we still have a lot of challenges to overcome.”

“You could … maybe get a feeling that their [SpaceX’s] system is ready to go. And it’s not yet. We’re in design and development. … We’re still developing. We’re still changing.  And we’re gonna get smarter and then we’re gonna have an incredible launch and we’re gonna have an incredible landing.” Lisa Watson-Morgan

That landing of two NASA astronauts on Artemis III will be preceded by an uncrewed test planned in 2024, but she explained NASA is only requiring that SpaceX demonstrate a safe landing. Not liftoff.

“The uncrewed demo is not necessarily planned to be the same Starship that you see for the crewed demo. It’s going to be a skeleton because it just has to land.  It does not have to lift back off, just for clarity. So clearly we want it to, but the requirements are for it to land.” Lisa Watson-Morgan

The discussion took place in the context of scientific investigations that can be conducted on the Artemis III mission. Working with SpaceX and a select group of scientists, NASA has chosen 13 regions at the Moon’s South Pole where the landing could occur. NASA is now seeking input from the broader lunar science community to narrow the list.

Many factors are at play, especially the lighting conditions, which are quite different than at the six Apollo landing sites that were closer to the equator. The South Pole is of great scientific interest and its permanently shadowed regions are thought to contain water ice that could be used to support human outposts and other purposes.

Shown here is a rendering of 13 candidate landing regions for Artemis III. Each region is approximately 9.3 by 9.3 miles (15 by 15 kilometers). A landing site is a location within those regions with an approximate 328-foot (100-meter) radius. Credits: NASA

One of the scientists in the audience expressed concern about whether the crew actually will be able to get down to and back from the surface to do science. Starship is very tall and has an elevator to get up and down.

Watson-Morgan offered assurances it will work. The elevator is multi-fault tolerant, she said, and NASA and SpaceX are working together hand-in-hand to test it, including with crews.

Logan Kennedy, HLS Surface Lead at Marshall, showed two slides of the progress being made. The second slide shows what it will look like when people set foot on the Moon next time, he said.

He also expressed confidence in the elevator. One concern is lunar dust, which sticks to everything and could foul the mechanisms. The elevator is designed to operate in that environment, he insisted, with a lot of conservatism built into the models because less is known about the lunar soil — regolith — at the South Pole than the Apollo sites.
