Media Advisory: CCI to demo xG testbed at the Mobile World Congress in Las Vegas - Virginia Tech Daily

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) is demonstrating the first end-to-end Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) using software defined radios (SDR) at the Mobile World Congress held Sept. 28-30, 2022, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev. O-RAN grabbed national attention this year when the $280 billion federal CHIPS and Science Act included $1.5 billion for promoting and deploying wireless technologies that use open and interoperable radio access networks.

What: The CCI xG Testbed is conducting first-of-its-kind research in two areas––Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) and Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS). The CCI xG Testbed O-RAN demonstration shows how an O-RAN secure network can be used to prioritize the communications needs of emergency first responders while still allowing the public to call and text. The CBRS demo will show how CBRS can be used to create a private 5G network to monitor flood control.

Who: A research team led by CCI xG Testbed Director Aloizio P. DaSilva will be presenting demos. CCI Executive Director Luiz DaSilva will also be in attendance.

Where: Mobile World Congress (MWC), Las Vegas Convention Center. Booth W2.1328.

When: CCI is demonstrating these cutting-edge technologies onsite and they will take place at the following times below. To RSVP, please contact Michele McDonald at mmcdonald@vt.edu; cell: 703-201-3454.

• Sept. 28-29 every half hour starting at 9:30 a.m. and running to 5 p.m.

• Sept. 30 every half hour starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m.

Note: demonstrations also are available at CCI at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington, Va.

Background:

CCI has deployed the first end-to-end O-RAN-compliant testbed in the United States, creating a foundation for openness, innovation, and flexibility in radio access networks. The CCI xG Testbed is built on software-defined radios (SDR) and open-source software and incorporates massive computing and storage capabilities for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. The testbed offers unparalleled opportunities for researchers, as well as industry and government partners, to test secure 5G and NextG network technologies, develop new intellectual property, and provide hands-on training for cyber professionals. Partners can remotely access the testbed.

About CCI

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative is a consortium of 41 institutions of higher education in Virginia, encompassing more than 320 researchers working at the intersection of cybersecurity, autonomous systems, and intelligence. CCI’s mission is focused on research, innovation, and workforce development.
