Hardspace: Shipbreaker - How To Use Demo Charges - GameRant

One thing that's consistent throughout sci-fi stories is the importance of technology. From cloning vats to energy swords and faster-than-light ships, technology shapes the direction of most stories in the genre. This is particularly true when it comes to the hero's own equipment. Having the right item at the right time can be all it takes to get the job done.

Joining the Utility Grapple and Modular Laser Cutter as one of the player's go-to tools in Hardspace: Shipbreaker, Demo Charges are powerful salvage tools. With the ability to blast apart ships in an instant, they are perfect for players who are racing against the clock to take apart a ship. Like any explosive, however, using them can be risky. Here's everything players need to know about how to use Demo Charges safely and effectively.

Introduction To Demo Charges

A Demo Charge is a compact, disc-like explosive that can be stuck to the surface of a ship and detonated remotely. Demo Charges come with a Charge Detonator that allows the player to trigger these explosives from a safe distance, which is a good idea if the player has any intention of leaving the salvage operation alive. In practice, using Demo Charges is simple, but even small errors can be lethal, as Hardspace is no sci-fi paradise.

Unlike other equipment, the player does not have Demo Charges by default in Career mode but must instead unlock them for 2,000 LYNX Tokens upon reaching Certification Rank 11 or higher. The detonation of a Demo Charge will cut any salvage of Cut Grade 3 or less within the blast radius, making them ideal for cutting through aluminum support beams and other pieces of salvage with which the Laser Cutter struggles. Even factoring in the time necessary to place the Charge and then retreated to a safe distance, Demo Charges are extremely time-efficient, which is good for beginners and veterans alike.

How To Use Demo Charges

The mechanics of using Demo Charges are simple. With either the Charges or Trigger equipped, the player can either use the currently equipped item or swap to the other item. When detonated, Demo Charges cut a narrow plane. This is revealed on-screen via a narrow grid, allowing the player to tailor their placement to a specific area. The player can place multiple Demo Charges before deciding to trigger them. Once the player activates the Trigger, all Demo Charges will detonate. Demo Charges have a default blast radius of 2m, but this can be expanded with upgrades, which the player will eventually do if they want to make the most of this sci-fi adventure.

The player cannot remove a Demo Charge once it has been placed unless they have the Disarming Mechanism upgrade, which means the player must be exceptionally careful with initial placement. When using the Disarming Mechanism, the player must stop the meter in the green region in order to disarm the Charge without incident. Failure results in the Demo Charge's detonation, setting the player ablaze, proving that depressurization isn't the game's only risky activity.

The Charge Trigger has a Durability, tracked in the HUD as well as the Hab Equipment Tab, which will fall with use. At Durability 75% or less, warnings will alert the player to the tool's decaying condition. When damaged, the Trigger may fail to detonate placed Charges. This sci-fi experience gets a lot less cinematic when one's tools are duds. To avoid this, use a Repair Kit between shifts to keep the Trigger in good condition.

Hardspace: Shipbreaker is available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
