One killed, six wounded in three separate Denver shootings overnight - The Denver Post

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

A boy was killed and six people were wounded in three separate shootings Friday night into Saturday morning in Denver.

Police responded to a large gathering in the 3000 block of West Virginia Avenue early Saturday to find five people shot and wounded, police spokesman Kurt Barnes said. One boy was transported to a hospital and died from his wounds, Denver police tweeted. Three men and a girl also were shot but are expected to survive.

Another person was shot and injured Saturday morning at a gathering inside a room at the Holiday Inn in Montbello, Barnes said. That individual is also expected to survive.

Late Friday night, a man was shot near the intersection of North Broadway Street and West 13th Avenue in Civic Center, police tweeted. He was transported to a hospital with wounds that were not life-threatening.

Y Combinator Demo Day to remain virtual and will be streamed live - TechCrunch

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

After feedback from the investor and founder communities, Y Combinator is making a change to how it does Demo Days in a remote world. The accelerator announced today that it will keep its two-day Demo Day virtual, but instead of offering pre-recorded pitches on-demand, the entire program will be streamed live.

In an e-mail, Y Combinator said the feedback was that “founders enjoyed the bonding experience involved in prepping for a live demo day and investors like seeing the founder pitch their businesses personally.”

“We’ve decided that a live Demo Day is an important part of founders’ YC experience,” Michael Seibel, Y Combinator’s CEO, wrote in a blog post.

The thirty-first Demo Day will be live over Zoom, splitting the batch between two days. Each company will have one minute to present, with a single-slide summary, description and team bio available on the website for attendees to peruse. If you can’t attend, recordings will be published at the end of the week.

The accelerator told TechCrunch that presentations will kick off at 9 a.m. PST and end at noon, with breaks scheduled throughout the day. Similar to past Demo Days, investors will be able to indicate interest in investing and share contact information with founders through YC Demo Day software.

Startups that deferred Demo Day in years past will present at the upcoming Demo Day. Deferring to present on Demo Day is fairly common and happens when founders are not yet ready to present their startup to the VC and tech press community. In a remote world, some startups may opt for this route until things turn back to normal (if that ever happens, of course).

For founders participating in remote accelerators, a question remains: Is the new format worth the equity? Y Combinator says that the most recent cohort is the first batch to participate in an entirely remote program, run entirely through the COVID-19 lockdown.

Founders recently shared with me the ups and downs of this accelerator season. One founder, Michael Vega-Sanz, recommends that first-time founders attend a physical accelerator instead of a virtual one for the energy it brings.

“If you’re a competitive person, like we were, you’ll see other companies kicking butt, getting praised in front of everybody,” he said. “I know this sounds a bit narcissistic, but we were like, ‘Damn, we really need to pick our game up.’ ” Peer competition might sound insignificant, but founders, much like investors, thrive on FOMO and rivalries.

Y Combinator going live feels like an attempt at bringing excitement and earnestness to the pitch experience. Techstars did a live, virtual demo day earlier in the pandemic, even bringing on Ice-T to congratulate the founders participating through a Cameo.

YC Demo Day will be August 24 and 25.

Samsung India on Saturday launched a new home demo service called Experience Samsung at Home to enable consumers to explore and buy Galaxy devices -- smartphones, tablets and wearables -- from their homes. The new service would help consumers book a home demo for their favourite Galaxy devices online and also enable them to purchase the device online and get it home delivered from a nearby Samsung Exclusive outlet.

Samsung is rolling out the Experience Samsung at Home service across 900 Samsung Exclusive retail outlets and would expand the programme further in the coming months.

“We have taken a number of measures to ensure consumer safety as social distancing is important to fight this pandemic. ‘Experience Samsung at Home’ is yet another initiative to create new shopper journeys as it will aid physical distancing by leveraging our deep retail presence in India. The launch of ‘Experience Samsung at Home’ service will enable consumers to explore and purchase our products online, whilst getting the deliveries offline from their neighborhood Samsung Exclusive Store," Mohandeep Singh, Senior Vice President, Samsung India, said in a statement.

"Our new initiatives are also helping our offline retailers and have resulted in a sharp recovery in our smartphone business post lockdown,”

According to the new programme, Samsung consumers looking to explore Galaxy devices from their homes can book an online appointment for home demo via the ‘Experience Samsung at Home portal’ by logging on to https://ift.tt/30j7xAh and by entering their contact
details.

The prospective buyers then have to select the closest Samsung Exclusive Store in their neighbourhood. Consumer details are sent real-time to the selected store and the store calls back the consumer within 24 hours to confirm the appointment. Then, a Samsung Experience Consultant (SEC) visits the consumer’s home as per schedule for product demo.

Bill Belichick reacts to six Patriots players opting out of 2020 season: 'I respect all of them' - CBS Sports

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Watch Now: Six Patriots Opt Out of Season (1:52)

There's been a sizable contingent of players across the NFL who have elected to opt out of the 2020 season due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Patriots were the team arguably impacted the most as these moves came across the bulletin. A total of six New England players decided to sit out of the 2020 season, including three full-time starters: linebacker Dont'a Hightower, safety Patrick Chung, and right tackle Marcus Cannon

That exit of a half-dozen Patriots is the largest one team has faced thus far, but head coach Bill Belichick isn't holding any grudges towards those opting out. Quite the opposite, in fact. Chung noted on "CBS This Morning" earlier this week that his conversation with Belichick regarding his opt-out went well and "he totally got it." With that in mind, it was no surprise to hear the head coach relay similar feelings when asked about it during his Friday videoconference.

"Well, I respect all of them. I respect all of the players on our team," he said of his players opting out. "We all have to make decisions and I talked to those guys and they explained their situations. They had to make a decision that was best for them and I totally respect and support it 100%."

The number of Patriots opting out almost grew by at least one as team captain Matthew Slater nearly decided to sit out the year, but then made the decision to play. As for whether or not more Patriots are anticipated to opt out, Belichick said he wasn't sure what the future will bring.

"I think everybody's got to make their own individual decisions on that," he said. "They have to weigh their own situation. Each one of us is unique and we all have different lives, situations, families, environments, and so forth and so on. There's no two situations that are the same. Everybody will have to make their own decision on that.

"My crystal ball is kind of cloudy right now, so I have no idea what will happen along those lines. I think everybody in the league, every team in the league, every player, every coach, everybody in the league is involved in that to some degree. We'll just have to see how it turns out."

Belichick opened his conference by saying that safety will be the top priority as New England begins camp and credited Robert Kraft for upgrading Gillette Stadium "to the highest level" to create a safe working environment.

Hong Kong issues arrest warrants for six overseas democracy activists including US citizen, state media reports - CNN

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
The six include United States citizen and resident Samuel Chu and Nathan Law, a former Hong Kong lawmaker and prominent pro-democracy campaigner who fled the city and is now living in London, according to the report.
The issuing of the warrant appears to mark the first time that authorities have used the new national security law, imposed by Beijing on June 30, to target activists based outside of the city.
The law criminalizes secession, subversion, terrorism and foreign interference, and it applies to offenses committed "outside the region" by foreigners who are not residents of Hong Kong or China.
Hong Kong is setting up a postponed election without a real opposition
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the six are wanted on suspicion of inciting secession and colluding with foreign countries, but did not give any further details. In response to a CNN request for comment, a Hong Kong Police spokesperson said the "police do not comment on media reports"
US national Chu, who is the managing director of the Hong Kong Democracy Council, a Washington DC-based advocacy group promoting freedom and autonomy for Hong Kong, appears to be the first non Hong Kong citizen to be targeted under the new security law.
In a twitter post Friday, Chu said in ordering his arrest, China was effectively targeting a US citizen for lobbying his own government. "I might be the 1st non-Chinese citizen to be targeted, but I will not be the last. If I am targeted, any American/any citizen of any nation who speaks out for HK can-and will be-too, said Chu. "We are all Hong Kongers now," he added.
According to Chu's biography, he has lived in the US as an American citizen for 25 years. In a statement posted online, the United States China Commission, a congressional-executive body that monitors human rights and the rule of law in China, called on the Hong Kong government to repudiate the warrant and for the United Nations to begin urgent talks on the national security law and the deteriorating human rights conditions in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong government has defended the law as necessary to protect national security, and promised that it would only affect a tiny number of people.
"The national security law is a crucial step to ending chaos and violence that has occurred over the past few months," Carrie Lam, the city's chief executive, said in July. "It's a law that has been introduced to keep Hong Kong safe. The legislation is lawful, constitutional and reasonable."
The announcement of the arrest warrants comes after Hong Kong disqualified 12 pro-democracy candidates from standing in now postponed legislative elections, including pro-democray leader Joshua Wong.
On Friday the Hong Kong government announced the poll, that was set to take place in September, would be delayed for one year citing concerns over the city's continuing coronavirus outbreak. However, activists have claimed the government is using the pandemic as an excuse to postpone the election to avoid a potential loss.
In recent weeks, several countries have suspended their extradition treaties with Hong Kong, including the United Kingdom and Australia. On Friday, Germany joined that list following the city's decision to postpone elections, according to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

Who are the wanted activists?

Law, the former lawmaker and democracy activist who was a leader of the 2014 Umbrella Movement, said on his Facebook page, "I have no idea what is my 'crime' and I don't think that's even important. These are trumped-up charges. Perhaps, in the end, the answer is that I love Hong Kong too much."
Law fled Hong Kong for London shortly the national security law came into effect, saying he left for his safety but pledged to continue to fight for the territory's democratic future. He was elected as a lawmaker in 2016, but was disqualified from office by Hong Kong courts after Beijing enacted a rarely-used power to "reinterpret" the city's constitution.
Law said that since leaving Hong Kong he has had to "sever" his relationship with his family.
"I was prepared when I left Hong Kong to be in exile; but this becoming a reality still disappoints, incapacitates, and frightens me. Indeed who can enjoy freedom from fear in the face of China's powerful political machine?" he said on social media. "What we can choose is how to respond to this fear: For me, it's with action."
Pro-democracy activist Nathan Law on June 19, 2020 in Hong Kong.
Other activists targeted include Simon Cheng, a former employee of the British consulate in Hong Kong who was granted asylum in the United Kingdom after alleging that he was tortured in China and interrogated by secret police about the city's pro-democracy protests, and Hong Kong pro-independence activists Ray Wong, Honcques Laus and Wayne Chan.
Wong, who was granted asylum in Germany in 2018, said on his official Twitter account that he "no longer advocate(s)" for Hong Kong's independence from mainland China and has not said anything relating to independence since the implementation of the national security law on July 1.
Wong accused the Hong Kong government of applying the law retroactively, saying "The only reason why I was sought for 'incitement to secession and collusion with foreign forces ' must be based on my activities before the NSL is in force."
The city's leader Lam and other Hong Kong officials have repeatedly said the law will "have no retrospective effect."
Laus, who said in a Facebook post that he is in the UK, called the arrest warrant "political persecution" and said he will "continue to express my political opinion freely." He called on the international community to "impose sanctions" on the Hong Kong and Chinese governments, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.
