MLB Opening Day: Cardinals start 2021 season with six-run first inning vs. Reds - CBS Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds began their 2021 MLB seasons at Great American Ball Park on Thursday afternoon (GameTracker). The National League Central rivals figured to match up nicely, but the Cardinals' bats broke loose immediately. In the first inning, the Cardinals as a team, scored six runs on four hits. Right-hander Luis Castillo was on the mound for the Reds, though two runs were scored on Eugenio Suarez's fielding error. Here's how it all went down:

• Paul Goldschmidt hits a double to deep right field (initially a home run before the call was overturned)
• Nolan Arenado gets his first hit as a Cardinal with an infield single up the middle
• Paul DeJong singles to right, Goldschmidt scores, 1-0
• Tyler O'Neil hit by pitch
• Yadier Molina safe at first on Suarez's fielding error, DeJong and Arenado scored, 3-0
• Dylan Carlson home run, Molina and O'Neill scored, 6-0

The Cardinals are no strangers to getting the offense firing on all cylinders early to start a ballgame; they set the postseason record by scoring 10 runs in the first inning of NLDS Game 5 against the Atlanta Braves in 2019. But in this case, it was the Carlson homer that really blew this Opening Day matinee wide open.

For Castillo, an All-Star in 2019 who posted a 3.21 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 70 innings during 12 starts last year, he just didn't look like he had his stuff in Thursday's opener. But the bigger area of concern for the Reds would be Suarez's performance at shortstop. Sure, it's extremely early in the season, but Suarez -- a natural third baseman -- didn't look comfortable at short and picked up two errors after two innings. He did begin his MLB career at the position, but has only made two starts at shortstop in the past five seasons prior to 2021 Opening Day.

The Suarez move was spurred by the Reds decision to move Mike Moustakas back to his original and presumably better defensive position of third base this season. Kyle Farmer and Dee Strange-Gordon file in as depth behind Suarez at shortstop.

In 2021, the Reds are looking to earn a second straight playoff berth while the Cardinals are trying to return to the top of the division after the Cubs took the crown in the abbreviated 2020 season.

R-Type Final 2 Demo Flys to the Switch and PS4 - Siliconera

People have a chance to see what the latest R-Type feels and looks like. NIS America released the R-Type Final 2 demo worldwide. However, it isn’t available on every system the game will launch on. Rather, the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions are available to test out. They also both appeared one day after the Japanese demos appeared.

The R-Type Final 2 demo gives people a brief taste of the game. Once you start it up, you can choose the R-9A Arrow-Head, R-9D Shooting Star, or R-9F Andromalius as your ship. The Practice, Kids, Normal, and Bydo difficulties are all available. You then go through the introduction, responding when necessary, and head to the first mission’s first stage.

There’s also a trailer, which gives people another look at what it’ll be like to play through the shoot’em up. It shows samples of both the different ships, stages, and opponents you’ll face.

R-Type Final 2 will come to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam worldwide on April 30, 2021. Digital and physical copies will be available. In Japan, there is also a special goods box with extra items available. The R-Type Final 2 Switch and PS4 demo is out worldwide.

The question of how long vaccine protection lasts can only be answered once enough time has passed, and while six months of protection is a modest target, it's longer than previously known. The study is continuing and future updates may reveal more about how long and how strong this protection is.

The vaccine remains more than 91% effective against disease with any symptoms for six months, the companies said. And it appeared to be fully effective against the worrying B.1.351 variant of the virus, which is the dominant strain circulating in South Africa and which researchers feared had evolved to evade the protection of vaccines, the companies said.

"The vaccine was 100% effective against severe disease as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and 95.3% effective against severe COVID-19 as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)," Pfizer and BioNTech said in a joint statement.

On Wednesday, the companies said a small trial of volunteers aged12 to 15 showed 100% efficacy in that age group.

"These data confirm the favorable efficacy and safety profile of our vaccine and position us to submit a Biologics License Application to the U.S. FDA," Albert Bourla, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement. A BLA is an application for full approval. The vaccine currently has emergency use authorization, EUA, which falls short of full approval.

"The high vaccine efficacy observed through up to six months following a second dose and against the variant prevalent in South Africa provides further confidence in our vaccine's overall effectiveness."

The company has been studying the vaccine in more than 46,000 volunteers and has noted 927 cases of confirmed Covid-19.

"From the 927 confirmed symptomatic cases of COVID-19 in the trial, 850 cases of COVID-19 were in the placebo group and 77 cases were in the BNT162b2 group, corresponding to vaccine efficacy of 91.3%," it said.

"Thirty-two cases of severe disease, as defined by the CDC, were observed in the placebo group versus none in the BNT162b2 vaccinated group, indicating that the vaccine was 100% efficacious in this analysis against severe disease by the CDC definition. Twenty-one cases, as defined by the FDA, were observed in the placebo group versus one case in the BNT162b2 vaccinated group, indicating 95.3% efficacy by the FDA definition."

These definitions matter. The FDA's definition of severe disease included a raised respiratory rate indicating respiratory distress; raised heart rate, an oxygen saturation level of 93% or lower; respiratory failure severe enough to need additional oxygen or ventilation; a blood pressure drop indicating shock; significant kidney, liver or neurological dysfunction, admission to an intensive care unit or death.

CDC's definition includes a blood oxygen level of 94% or lower and an x-ray finding of lung infiltrates -- an indication of pneumonia -- of greater than 50%

The most common adverse events were pain at the injection site, fatigue and headache.

"In South Africa, where the B.1.351 lineage is prevalent and 800 participants were enrolled, nine cases of COVID-19 were observed, all in the placebo group, indicating vaccine efficacy of 100%," the company said.

"Vaccine safety has now been evaluated in more than 44,000 participants aged 16 years and older with more than 12,000 vaccinated participants having at least six months of follow-up after their second dose."

Itching to see a movie … at a local theater, no less?

You’re in luck because Regal announced that six of its Southern California theaters will reopen for business on Friday, April 2.

Pandemic-starved moviegoers will get to see “Godzilla vs. Kong” from Warner Bros., as well as “The Unholy” and “Tom & Jerry,” along with a slate of additional films opening in the coming weeks, including “Mortal Kombat,” “A Quiet Place Part II” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Here are the Regal theaters that will reopen Friday:

• L.A. LIVE & 4DX, 1000 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles
• South Gate & IMAX, 8630 Garfield Ave., South Gate
• West Covina & ScreenX, 1200 Lakes Dr., West Covina
• Temecula & IMAX, 40750 Winchester Road, Temecula
• Valencia ScreenX & IMAX, 24435 Town Center Dr., Santa Clarita
• Irvine Spectrum ScreenX, 4DX, IMAX, RPX & VIP, 500 Spectrum Center Dr., Irvine

Regal’s reopening plan include a wide range of health and safety measures that adhere to CinemaSafe protocol and guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

Regal employees will wear masks and undergo daily health screenings, including temperature checks where mandated.

Moviegoers will be able to purchase their tickets in advance on Regal’s mobile app. They’ll also have the ability to buy popcorn, soda and other concession items via the app once inside the theater.

Every other concession register will be closed to maintain social distancing, self-service condiment condiment stands will be closed and refills for drinks and popcorn will be given in new containers.

Guests will be required to wear masks while in the lobby, hallways and restrooms, and wall-mounted hand sanitizers will be available on both sides of the main entrance.

A subsidiary of the Cineworld Group, Regal operates one of the largest movie theater chains in the U.S. It includes 6,979 screens in 526 theaters in 42 states and the District of Columbia and Guam as of Feb. 28.
