Underrepresented Tech Workers Say They’re Overworked and Stressed

(Bloomberg) -- The pandemic-related shift to remote work exacerbated an already difficult year for many women and minorities in technology, a new survey shows. The workers said they felt increased pressure to be online outside of work hours and faced increased harassment through online tools. The survey, published Tuesday, aims to help leaders understand the subtle but pervasive ways the pandemic has made work more difficult. For example, 85% of respondents said their anxiety increased in the last year. Two-thirds said they were working longer hours.“There is a broad range of what we consider bad behavior” on the part of employers, said Caroline Sinders, a researcher with Convocation Design and Research who is one of the authors of the report, published by Project Include, an organization that advocates for inclusion in the tech industry. “Some of the stuff doesn’t technically break rules, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be captured.”One goal of the research, Sinders said, was to assess whether employees felt supported during a year of political upheaval, protests against racism, financial uncertainty and hundreds of thousands of deaths. “Do people feel like they have access to mental health resources? Are they allowed to take time off?” she asked. “The answer is pretty mixed.”The survey was open to the public and drew responses from close to 3,000 people, most of whom were in tech and many of whom identified as women or nonbinary. The results indicated that the harms of a mid-pandemic workplace disproportionately fell on those already on the margins of the tech industry. One in 10 respondents reported increased harassment based on race or ethnicity. A quarter of people felt more gender-based harassment than before the pandemic (98% of those who did were women). And 23% of workers over the age of 50 felt an increase in harassment or hostility based on their age.Without the usual rhythms of in-person meetings and offices, the methods of harassment changed as well, the survey found. The more frequent offenders were chat, email or video meetings, where more than 40% of respondents experienced harassment. Fewer people, about a quarter, saw harassment happen over other productivity tools. Most often, harassment took place in online or digital spaces that were less public. Many employers failed to adapt their policies to the unique circumstances of remote work or clarified how to appropriately communicate. Ellen Pao, a founder of Project Include and an author of the study, said teachers are being trained how to run classes online, but fewer companies are training managers on how to adjust to new problems such as Zoom fatigue and work hour boundaries. “A lot of managers in the tech world have not been trained to manage well in general, and when you add the complexities of switching to an online format, the communication is poor, and there are no new rules or policies to explain how to behave,” Pao said. “Expectations are blurry.”On top of all the changes, 35% of respondents don’t trust their companies to address harm fairly, the study showed, so they are less likely to report harassment or other problems. To Sinders, the study’s co-author, these problems are all interrelated. “A lack of process is contributing to people facing toxicity and harassment in the workplace and not respecting people’s time boundaries,” she said. “In a physical office, sometimes you can hide. That’s not happening online.”For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2021 Bloomberg L.P.

Army's Pilotless Black Hawk Highlights Emerging Technology in Demo Flight - Military.com

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Sikorsky pilots working with Army scientists have demonstrated optionally piloted flight technology on an S-70 Black Hawk, highlighting a future in which the service's next-generation helicopters may fly autonomously in combat.

A contender in the Army Future Vertical Lift, or FVL, program, Sikorsky demonstrated the supervised autonomy capabilities of the Black Hawk -- which was equipped with the company's Matrix autonomous flight software and hardware -- under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Aircrew Labor In-cockpit Automation System, or ALIAS, effort.

Sikorsky's test pilot used a special control tablet to oversee the demo as the aircraft conducted an autonomous takeoff, avoided two simulated obstacles and landed by itself, according to a March 29 Sikorsky news release.

"Through the ALIAS program and our unique combination of autonomy software and hardware, we are bringing our customers one step closer to safer and smarter flight," Igor Cherepinsky, director of Sikorsky Innovations, said in the release. "Our end goal is to transition this technology to help address emerging mission requirements, including those outlined in the U.S. Army's Future Vertical Lift (FVL) program."

Sikorsky, part of Lockheed Martin Corp., developed its Raider X prototype helicopter for the Army's Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft, or FARA, effort, to replace the AH-64 Apache. And a team from Sikorsky-Boeing developed the Defiant X to compete in the service's Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft, or FLRAA, effort, which is designed to replace the UH-60 Black Hawk.

The autonomous flight technology demonstration is part of an effort to reduce the workload on Army aviators flying extremely complex missions on the future battlefield, according to Jay Macklin, business development director for Sikorsky Future Vertical Lift.

"We designed Raider X and Defiant X to compete in highly complex ... environments; our advancements in automation and autonomy will enable aircrews to focus on the mission, not just flying the aircraft," Macklin said in the release. "Our approach reduces pilot and crew workload by offloading certain mission tasks, enabling better situational awareness of the overall mission while providing extended operational capability and increased safety."

Sikorsky plans to further develop its Matrix autonomous flight technology under Phase III of the DARPA ALIAS program through 2022, according to the release.

The effort has the potential to transform how aviators and aircrews manage sophisticated helicopters and maintain situational awareness in limited visibility conditions, according to the release.

"Our approach to autonomy is both full-spectrum and human-centric," Sikorsky's chief pilot, Mark Ward, said in the release. "As this demonstration showed, aerial vehicles equipped with MATRIX technology will be capable of operating autonomously from takeoff to landing, something we are capable of doing routinely now."

Pokemon Go Creator Releasing a 5G-Exclusive Game Demo - IGN - IGN

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
Pokemon Go developer Niantic is releasing a 5G-exclusive game demo called Codename: Urban Legends. The demo is part of Niantic's strategy to build a "planet-scale AR platform", according to a new blog post from the developer. Codename Urban Legends has been created to test what an immersive multiplayer experience would look like when it leverages 5G technology.

Codename: Urban Legends looks like a far more involved social augmented reality game than the likes of Pokemon Go. "5G multi-access edge computing (MEC) can handle up to 10x simultaneous players compared to 4G," says Niantic. "This is just the beginning of how we can augment the world around us faster and experience adventures, together."

In Niantic's video demonstration of Urban Legends, you can see a family simultaneously fighting monsters in a wide-open space, dodging projectiles and shooting at augmented creatures with their phones. This is what Niantic is calling "large-scale multiplayer on 5G." The developer has partnered with Deutsche Telekom, Globe Telecom, and Verizon to network test and help realise the technology.
The game has been built on the platform that powers Niantic's other games, like Pokemon Go and Ingress, and will use the "ultra-low latency and high bandwidth capabilities" of 5G to its advantage. "By teaming up, players cast magic spells to blast monsters and rescue mythical allies, including Doty, the original Niantic Explorer," the blog post reads.

It's not clear when players will be able to check out Codename: Urban Legends, but we'll be sure to let you know when it's available. However, Niantic has told The Verge that the game will be exclusive to its carrier partners when it releases.

Niantic CEO John Hanke recently teased an updated look at its augmented reality glasses design. For more on Niantic, check out our article covering the first details revealed about the new Pikmin augmented reality game, which has debuted in early access in Singapore.

Macy Kempf named Kernels' first Class AA all-state honoree in six years - The Daily Republic

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Kempf, the 5-foot-11 senior forward, was selected to the list of Class AA’s honor list following a highly successful season for the Kernels girls basketball team, which finished sixth in Class AA with a 16-8 season.

Every player on both the first and second teams competed in the Class AA state tournament, including two representatives from the state champions Sioux Falls Washington. On the first team, the Warriors’ senior center Sydni Schetnan and junior guard/forward Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda were joined by Harrisburg senior guard/forward Brecli Honner, Aberdeen Central senior guard Brooklyn Kusler and O’Gorman senior guard Isabelle Moore, with Brandon Valley sophomore forward Hilary Behrens. The teams were selected by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.

The second team included Kempf, Aberdeen Central senior guard Abby Kopecky, Harrisburg junior forward Emilee Boyer, O’Gorman junior guard/forward Hannah Ronsiek, Rapid City Central senior guard Jordon Heckert and Rapid City Central junior guard Jayda McNabb.

Kempf averaged 12.8 points, 7 rebounds and 2.3 rebounds per contest, while blocking 15 shots and making 33 steals for the season. From the field, she was nearly a 51% field goal shooter and made 73% of her free throws. On defense, Kempf frequently had the task of guarding the opponent’s tallest or most skilled interior player, a task she embraced.

“Macy has been so important to our success the last couple of years,” Mitchell coach Cole Knippling said. “She has become a consistent scoring threat both inside and outside on the court, but what really makes her stand out is her defense and rebounding.”

Kempf scored in double-figures 16 times for the season for Mitchell, including a season-high 18 points three times, along with three double-doubles.

Kempf was also the lone Kernel picked to the all-Eastern South Dakota Conference following the season. She is the first MHS girls basketball player to receive all-state honors since Taylor Volesky was named to the Class AA second team in 2015. Kempf intends to play basketball at Mount Marty University in college.

“She was a high-level defender and had the ability to control the boards at the end of games," Knippling said. "She had a great career for the Kernels, and this honor is just validation of that fact. I am excited to see what she will do at the next level.”

The first team honorees included a number of do-it-all standouts for their teams. Schetnan, a 6-foot-5 center, was among the state’s most imposing players on both ends of the court in a championship season. The only repeat first-team selection in 2021, she averaged 16.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, along with 67 blocks for the season, shooting nearly 58%. Schetnan was the Class AA coaches’ pick for player of the year, which goes to a top senior in each class. She intends to play both basketball and volleyball at the University of Louisville, which played in the Elite Eight Tuesday for the third consecutive tournament.

Her teammate Mwenentanda helped the Warriors to a 20-2 season and the Class AA title. A 6-foot-2 junior, she averaged 15.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 46.8% from the field and 77% on free throws. Mwenentanda is a top-25 national recruit in the class of 2022, according to ESPN.com, with Clemson, Duke, Iowa State, Louisville, Maryland, Oregon, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Texas and UCLA among the schools she’s considering.

Honner, a 5-foot-10 guard/forward, led Harrisburg to a fifth-place finish at 21-3. She paced the Tigers in scoring with 14.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, shooting 47% from the field and 44% from 3-point range. She will play basketball for the University of Sioux Falls collegiately.

Kusler, a 6-foot senior, averaged a Class AA-best 18 points and seven rebounds per game, shooting 65% on field goals and 90% on free throws, helping Aberdeen Central to a 19-5 season and seventh place in Class AA. She has signed to play volleyball at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Moore, the Class AA Spirit of Su winner, helped the Knights finish third in Class AA with a 17-7 record. She averaged 13.3 points, 5 rebounds and 3.8 assists, shooting almost 46% from the field and nearly 80% on free throws. The 5-foot-10 guard will play basketball at Augustana.

The lone underclassmen honored on the team, Behrens scored the most total points of the Class AA honorees with 339 points, or 17 points per game, along with 5.5 rebounds each game. She helped the Lynx to a fourth-place finish in Class AA with a 17-7 record.

Honner, Kusler and Mwenentanda moved up from 2020 second team honors to the first team in 2021. Ronsiek was named to the all-state second team for a second straight year.

Seaspan orders six 15,500 TEU containership newbuilds - Ship Technology

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

Atlas Corporation subsidiary Seaspan has signed agreements with a major shipyard for six 15,500 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containership newbuilds.

The deliveries of the new containerships are expected to commence in the second half of 2023 and continue until mid-2024.

Once delivered, the newbuilds will enter long-term charters with international liners.

The new containerships are expected to be financed from current liquidity and additional borrowings.

All six vessels will feature emissions reduction technologies and be scrubber-fitted.

Seaspan president and CEO Bing Chen said: “Our creative customer partnerships continue to drive best-in-class solutions for our customers and quality growth for our shareholders. The depth of expertise and industry-leading execution of our Atlas and Seaspan teams combine to offer our customers unmatched capabilities by providing consistently differentiated services, operational excellence and high-value win-win solutions.

“I am proud of Seaspan’s strong commitment to leading the industry by leveraging our fully integrated platform, broad scale, flexibility and determination to be the best-in-class business solution provider to our liner customers.”

Earlier this month, Seaspan signed agreements with another major shipyard for a further six 15,000 TEU containership newbuilds.

The deliveries of these containerships are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Seaspan’s global fleet includes nearly 127 vessels with approximately 1,073,200 TEU capacity.

Since December last year, the company has ordered as many as 37 newbuild vessels and acquired two second-hand vessels, increasing their total fleet capacity to 1,653,200 TEU.

The company stated that the new vessels will enhance its fleet composition, especially its core 10,000 TEU to 15,000 TEU size category.
