Chocolate on the Delaware demo reservations due Feb. 18 - CapeGazette.com

With the observance of Valentine’s Day, chocolate may be on the minds of some who harbor a sweet tooth.

Lewes Historical Society’s living history characters will present Chocolate on the Delaware Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Lewes History Museum. Attendees can delight their senses with the touch, smell and a sample taste of chocolate. Register by Tuesday, Feb. 18, via email to marcos@historiclewes.org, or call 302-645-7670.

The history of chocolate can be traced to the ancient Mayans, and even earlier to the ancient Olmecs, the first major civilization in Mexico. Chocolate found its place in the Colonial-era culture of the American Revolution. The Delaware Bay and River acted as a major trade route in the 18th century with early records showing 1,300 lbs. of chocolate passing through Lewes from 1768 to 1773. Its popularity took it through the World War II into the present day, with possible scientific applications for the future.

Audience members will experience a demonstration of the 18th century chocolate-making process using period methods, and then sample the final product.

The program is family friendly and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free, but a $5 donation per person is appreciated.
