Letter | Train demo coming, but still not trail - Santa Cruz Sentinel

A high cost, high carbon train slows surface street traffic, benefits power companies, negatively impacts neighborhoods, uglifies our most beautiful areas, and even with their unrealistically high maximum 3,000 per day ridership estimate, the RTC admits that won’t touch daily Highway 1 traffic of more than 100,000.

Residents push back against a small tax on Measure R for education benefitting so many, but millions of recurring tax dollars would be needed for a train benefitting a tiny number – under 3,000 – while the majority of taxpayers sit in highway traffic to work over the hill.

A low carbon, low cost, cooling trail provides a needed legitimate Santa Cruz-appropriate transportation alternative, beautifies, saves money for buses and tax payers. An all around win. Build the trail first.

Was Measure D hijacked? Where do upcoming candidates stand on this? Big taxes need voter approval.

— Chris Bowman, Capitola

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
