The Sarasota Concert Association has put together a 76th season featuring some major artists and prominent orchestras, including the return of such favorites as the Cleveland Orchestra, Emanuel Ax and the Takacs Quartet for its 2021 winter season.
The Great Performers Series will run Jan. 14 through March 16 in four concerts at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and two at the Riverview Performing Arts Center, with the hopes that health guidelines will allow theater and concert venues to reopen. SCA had to cancel final concerts this spring because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The pandemic has dealt a severe blow to cultural organizations in Sarasota and around the world,” said Joy McIntyre, the organization’s board president. “Our decision to cancel our final concerts was, of course, a great loss. But it was the right thing to do for our patrons and the community.”
McIntyre said the organization is looking forward to what she describes as a “spectacular 2021 season, despite recent economic setbacks.”
It features the return of the Cleveland Orchestra (Jan. 24), under the direction of Franz Weiser-Most, who performed to a sold-out Sarasota crowd in 2018. “We have already heard from subscribers purchasing seats this early — a great sign that SCA’s devoted supporters are here to stay.”
Weiser-Most marks his 19th year as music director, and he will lead a concert that features guest artist Yuja Wang, a Bejing-born pianist who was named Musical America’s Artist of the Year in 2017.
New to the Great Performers Series is violinist Benjamin Beilman, whose parents live in Sarasota. He has achieved international acclaim and was described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “monstrously talented.” Beilman will join another rising musician, pianist and 2017 Van Cliburn competition winner Yekwon Sunwoo, on March 1 at 7:30 p.m. March at Riverview PAC.
The season opens Jan. 14 at Van Wezel with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, one of Russia’s oldest symphony orchestras, led by music director Pavel Kogan with violinist Blake Pouliot as the guest soloist.
The Bach Collegium Japan, an ensemble of instrumentalists and singers formed in 1990 by Masaaki Suzuki, will perform on Jan. 28. Suzuki’s goal was to introduce Japanese audiences to baroque music and instruments of the period.
The Takacs Quartet, a frequent part of the Great Performer Series who last performed here in 2018, will return Feb. 25. The ensemble of violinists Edward Dusinberre and Harumi Rhodes, violist Geraldine Walther and cellist Andras Fejer, will be joined by pianist Joyce Wang, who rose to international attention as the silver medalist at the 2005 Van Cliburn piano competition.
The season ends with Ax, who frequently appears in Sarasota, on March 16.
Van Wezel concerts are at Van Wezel, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, and Riverview programs are at 1 Ram Way, Sarasota. Subscriptions are $140-$425. Single tickets and online purchases will begin Aug. 1. 941-225-6500; scasarasota.org/tickets
The organization will announce the lineup for its free Music Matinees featuring local artists in August.
