Six 49ers make ESPN’s NFC West All-decade team - Niners Nation

depolitikblog.blogspot.com

ESPN released their NFC West All-Decade team a few days ago. Who was the San Francisco 49ers player of the decade? Who else?

Joe Staley, LT

Years with team: 2007-19

The standard-bearer for 13 years at left tackle, Staley held down his spot for the entirety of the decade. Along the way, he earned six Pro Bowl berths, three second-team All-Pro nods, and a spot on the NFL’s all-decade team for the 2010s as San Francisco went to four NFC Championship Games and won two of them. One of the most athletic tackles to ever play, Staley was known as much for his fun-loving personality as his production on the field, all of which makes him one of the most beloved Niners in franchise history.

Honorable mention: Patrick Willis, LB, 2007-2014. He retired after the 2014 season at 30 because of a nagging toe injury. But it speaks to his consistent excellence that he played only half the decade and still made the NFL’s all-decade team for the 2010s. Among his other honors in that span: four Pro Bowl appearances and three first-team All-Pro nods. — Nick Wagoner

A couple of Hall of Famers from the same draft class. That’s a nice feather in the cap for San Francisco.

Each of ESPN’s NFC West reporters voted on the All-Decade team, and six players made it. Staley was the left tackle, while George Kittle was the tight end, and Mike Iupati was the left guard. Iupati played in San Francisco from 2010-2014, and he was the epitome of a “Jim Harbaugh type of player.”

On defense, Justin Smith got the not at defensive tackle. The Cowboy played with the Niners from 08-14 and was one of the best defensive linemen I’ve seen play from a technical standpoint—though being stronger than everyone helps. Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman were no-brainers to start at linebacker. Finally, Richard Sherman was the starting cornerback on the roster. Sherman definitely is listed for his time in San Francisco and not for any other team he played for.

Here is the entire roster:
