Greenwood County Public Health reporting six rabies cases Featured - KVOE

The Greenwood County Health Department is announcing an outbreak that surprisingly has nothing to do with COVID-19.

According to the Greenwood County Health Department's Facebook page, six rabies cases have been reported recently near Eureka. Health Officer Vicki Lindsey-Ross is advising residents to be "observant of erratic behavior" in wildlife and livestock.

Pet owners are being encouraged to follow best health practices and ensure all of their pets shots and vaccinations are up to date. Rabies is a fatal viral disease often transmitted through the bite of an affected animal.

The virus attacks the nervous system affecting the brain and eventually causing death. If you are bitten by an animal such as a dog, cat, horse or any livestock which have a large amount of human contact, wash the bite immediately with soap and water, seek medical attention and report the bite to your local health or animal control department.
