PARKERSBURG, W.Va (WTAP) -
The Move Over Law is simply defined as a traffic law that requires vehicles to move into another lane when they see a car pulled over on the side of the highway.
Six states are working to put together an initiative this upcoming weekend to educate and inform the public on the Move Over Law.
The six units involved are the Ohio State Highway Patrol, West Virginia State Police, Indiana State Police, Kentucky State Police, Michigan State Police, and the Pennsylvania State Police.
In the past five years, fifty trooper cars have been involved in Move Over Law violations, and one civilian has been killed during that time period.
A trooper from the Cambridge Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol says that many of these violations could have been prevented, and drivers can be distracted or under the influence.
“I never stop somebody on a blind curve, I never try to stop anybody over a hill crest or anything like that,” said Trooper Brian Neff of the Cambridge Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. “Whenever I have had to write that violation, it’s because the vehicle had nobody near them, no one ahead of them, nobody beside them, and nobody anywhere behind them. And they simply could have, very easily could have, and they could see us from a long distance.”
In the past five years, there have been over 23,000 violations of the Move Over Law .
The iniative begins Sunday July 19 at 12:01 a.m., and goes until Saturday July 25 at 11:59 p.m.
